You need to have a backup in another place. Just having 2, 3 or more copys in you house is not backup. What if your house burn down to the ground? Then all your data is lost. Hide a HD in another lokation and just mirror it with your daily HD once a week or so. Thats what I do. And remember to mirror your HD to new HD every 3 year or so. Than you have a good backup strategy 😊

I have two 2big 40tb LaCie drives and they constantly get corrupted from my Mac Studio ultra. No idea what’s going on or if it is Sonoma causing this. Not disconnecting them or abusing in any way. They worked perfect on Ventura but terrible on Sonoma. I’ve tried every different format, expat, apps, Mac OS journaled. As well I’ve tried one on raid zero and one raid one and they both still somehow got corrupted and refused to mount. Lacie raid manager sees the dives and says they are healthy. Disk utility fails to repair them, only way to fix is to re format.

what are the speeds of each ?

First, so sorry for the late reply! The speed of each unit depends on the drives used and their configuration. All things being equal though my Synology unit with 4 NAS drives in a RAID 5/SHR is nearly twice as fast as the other two LaCie units.

Do you need to raid the who NAS (with 4 to 8 drives) , or can you build a DAS (with the 4 other drives ) into the 1821+ . So that you don't need a separate back up place .

Hi there! Thanks for the question. You don't need to create a RAID array with your drives on the 1821+ NAS. You could run each drive as an independent storage pool. However keep in mind that two or even 4 separate drives in the same NAS unit does not provide for a good only backup solution. If the NAS motherboard or power supply experiences a failure you will loose access to all the drives even if they are running independently without a RAID configuration. Hope this helps!
