I think that within the context of the series, Rudolf's actions were - if not justified - at least logical. The previous centuries had seen an unpresidented boom in the human population, which coincided with an unpresidented boom in violence and anarchy. The Earth-Sirius war is a good example as both sides engaged in levels of senseless butchery hardly replicated before or sense, initiated seemingly for no reason at all. An even better example, are the clips shown before this scene in the documentary Julian's watching. A hard genetic determinist like Rudolf might easily conclude that, the advances in technology which allowed this population boom had a dysgenic effect, and allowed those with a predisposition for antisocial traits to breed like rabbits. The "spiteful mutants" theory of societal decline. Except people ascribing themselves to the "spiteful mutants" theory don't generally grow up in a world with the insane levels of debauchery, violence, and immorality that Rudolf did. For that reason they don't usually propose genocide and state enforced mass sterilisation to solve the problem. Given what we see in the show this theory might to some extent apply, whatever the case he certainly managed to stamp out the barbaric anarchy of the period preceeding him. The only problem, is that he replaced that barbaric anarchy with an unsustainable standard of genetic purity, which extended to non-genetic factors like class, handicaps, and certain kinds of mental illness. I call it unsustainable because even 500 years later, the overall population nosedived to barely a tenth of what it had been when Rudolf took office. Clearly far more than necessary died or were sterilised. Even if Rudolf's policy likely killed more or less everyone responsible for the anarchy in the immediately preceding decades, calling it over the line is hardly a stretch. Still, given the circumstances, it's honestly hard to say it was unreasonable or unjustified. With time, even Rudolf's dynasty fell to a milder form of the lethargy, debauchery, and immorality which corrupted and destroyed the Galactic Federation. Was it better than the unceasing, galaxy-wide terror which had come before? I suppose that's up for the individual - and the historian - to decide. Hey: if a devil gets caught by a monster, I, as a human being, can only hope they both die. But if the monster at least rips the devil's throat out, that's not as bad as having a devil running around. Too bad that the monster will feast on flesh until he's had his fill, though.

For anyone who believes that a single man like Rudolf could not have possibly done so much changing damage to a nation/society and still retain absolute power and a strong sense of worship/support, then I would like you to point to the examples of Mao Zedong. Literally both Rudolf (Inferior Genes Exclusion Act) and Mao (Great Leap Forward) enacted genocidal policies on their own people and still remained strongly in power and even significant support. Both Mao and Rudolf despite murdering millions/billions of their own people still was revered similar to a God after their death. For those that can't believe that Rudolph can turn an advanced/modern democratic republican interstellar society into space 18th century feudal Prussia, then Mao also a similar thing with the cultural revolution, where he effectively wiped out millennia of Chinese traditional culture and replaced it with his own preferred one with his own cult of personality. What really scares me so much is how easily the masses can be manipulated by ruler and state, and in some cases how little they can matter to a state as well. Mao killed around 50 million people and that only strengthened his power, Rudolph literally killed around 4.9 billion people and dramatically decreased the entire population of humanity, like literally when the Galactic Empire started, there were 300 billion people in the Galaxy. By the time of LOGH, literally only 25 billion people were left. That is so scary that a state can do so much damage to people with no real danger to its authority, and this again parallels in China where the one child policy has put China's demographics in terminal decline. We may think people like Rudolf and the rise of the Galactic Empire can only exist in fiction, but they have existed many times in history before, and might very well exist again.

In the novel I think the Free Planets are still heavily outnumbered but according to the show at this point the Free Planets had a slight numerical advantage and if they had let the Nobility fight it out with Reinhard they probably could have captured and held large parts of the enemy territory.

Ironically the first Kaiser's only son was an embodiment of what Rudolf wanted to eradicate with the Inferior Genes Exclusion Act. His only son is rumored to have been cognitively impaired, and he never took the throne. Instead Sigsmund I, son of his eldest daughter, took the throne. Like the fact that his son had congenital defects, also made him worry he might have been the cause. With it possibly leading to his death.
@jorgebersabe293 Жыл бұрын
And even more ironic, his ideology was unmade by the Empire he created: -His Inferior Genes Exclusion Act stopped to be enforced, eventually being revoked a century earlier before the main series. -Some of his descendants would have been killed because of his policies, like Kaspar (who was homosexual), Friedrich IV (who was physically weak) and the wife and daughter of Otho von Braunschweig (who have a congenital disease). -The High Nobles he founded became more complacent and decadent, deviating from the best of the best idea that Rudolf had in mind when founding them.

@@jorgebersabe293What is also kind of ironic or interesting is how he called the second coming of James Wood. With him later turning out to be the complete opposite. With James Wood being a renowned war veteran, who won victories against pirates. And later became a crusader against corruption and the likes as a politician. He is generally remembered favourably. Rudolf von Goldenbaum is remembered unfavorably, abusing the law and using it to create a corrupt state with him as supreme ruler. Even his own victory against pirates are dubious at best due to his cruel tactics, and rumored use of nuclear weapons.

The problem of proclaim such laws is that genetics is a imprevisive thing. Almost every human being born with some health problem, and the question is, where you drawn the line between the acceptable and the impure? Since almost every person has a kind of cronical disease, going to a less critical like an cronical flu, or even a congenital problem
@HypermarketCommodity9 ай бұрын
You draw the line somewhere and then you work your way up or down as needed, nature is by far not this benevolent. The evolutionary pressure gets applied there regardless of any moral considerations, leading to the overall vitalisation of the gen stock, while the perpetual degeneration by allowing for the lifting of all but the most enviable evolutionary pressures will become terminal over time and only increases the dependency on technology.

Oof bold claim, one I disagree with, but I see where you're going with this and unfortunately can imagine such a scenario. Not for covid maybe, but who knows... I'm vaccinated myself and advocate for vaccination, but I also understand why some don't want to get vaccines especially when the laws appear to be restricting personal liberties. From what I've seen, one major difference is that "Inferior Genes" laws targetted individuals who weren't harming anyone else, and were discriminated based on something they had no choice over. Vaccination, however, is a matter of choice, and choosing not to be vaccinated, while is still a right, is ultimately dangerous to other people in society who would like to get vaccinated but can't due to various reasons like allergies or chronic diseases. The balance between liberty and responsibility is a delicate one.
