Thought you might tie in the casper idea to the fact that Freddie is watching it in a theater when Dodd calls him at the end of the film.

"Past trauma can violently arise when left dormant." This whole movie becomss about the struggle between our animalistic, traumatized nature and our fantasy, occultic need to find direction and purpose and order beyond ourselves, like the swirling of the waves, we get lost in the process, repeating it time and again, metaphorically the same process in some different context.

When we see him take that job that takes him away from Doris, is he doing that on purpose? Like unconsciously self-sabotaging, or running from something good or something like that?

Love this movie, but it's far too kind to Dodd. He's a hypocrite, something you can't say about Quill, for better or worse.

"It *wasn't* a chemical imbalance, and it *wasn't* drugs and alcohol. I think, um... It was much more that I had lived an incredibly *American* life. This idea that if *I could just achieve X and Y and Z,* that *everything would be okay.* There's a thing in the book about how when somebody leaps from a burning skyscraper, it's *not* that they're not afraid of *falling* anymore, it's that *The Alternative* is *SO* awful. And so then you're invited to consider *what could be SO awful* that *leaping to Your Death* would seem like an *escape* from it. I don't know if you have any experience with this kind of thing -- But it's worse than *ANY* kind of physical injury... It *may be* in the old days what was known as 'a *spiritual* crisis [He's drinking PAINT-Thinner; and TORPEDO-Juice; and NUT-Juice; and DEVELOPING- Fluid, and Photographic FIXER --] : feeling as though *every axiom in your life* turned out to be *false* ... and there was actually *nothing.* And that *you* were nothing. And that it's *all* A Delusion and *you're* so much better than everybody 'cause *you can SEE* how this is just a delusion, and you're so much *worse* because you can't fucking *function.* It's *really* horrible." -- *Foster,* The End of The Tour.

David Foster Wallace : It's so much easier having dogs. David Lipsky : Ha, ha - I'm sure. David Foster Wallace : I mean, yes, you don't get laid, but you don't have that feeling, like you're hurting their feelings, all the time. David Lipsky : Right, right. David Foster Wallace : I'd like to emphasise strictly *platonic* relationship with the dogs. David Lipsky : He he; I'll make sure I'll highlight it in the article, sure.

The Fox, of course, is always to be understood as an analogue of Lucifer -- because it's a proud, clever, cunning, mischievous animal that thrives by breaking The Rules and Violating Boundaries -- "Tell That Fox [King Herod Antipas] -- 'Today and Tomorrow, I cast out Devils and Work Cures, and on The Third Day I shall be Perfected." When Freddie Quell first starts to go off-message and slip the leash to defend His Captain against attack by doubters and non-believers, he rounds up a couple of other roosters knocking about The Henhouse, vists the man in The Night and administers a punishment-beating on behalf of The Cause -- next morning : Dog : Well, I don't think you have to worry about Mr. John More speaking out against you. Master : ....What did you do? Dog : He had a wise ass mouth. Mater :My little soldier, what did you do? ......You need to tell me so that I know. Dog : No, I'm not going to tell you. Nothing bad. I just... I just talked to him. [with My Fists] Master : But This is *not* The Way. Naughty boy, OK? All right? Freddie? You are *a mischief.* *A horrible young man,* you are. This is acting like *an animal,* a *dirty animal* that *eats its own feces* when hungry. We stand far *above* that crowd. *Don't We?* Dog : Well... [No. No, We Don't.] Master : (changes The Subject -- ) We need to remember where we've met -- (If You're God The Father, and he's Lucifer, then you met in Heaven, sir.) It's *nagging* at me. Isn't it *you?* [ No, it wouldn't be -- Hell is the REMEMBERANCE of Heaven; better to Rule in Hell, than Serve in Heaven. ]

We are NOT animals. We have free will. You make a choice not to behave like an animal and YOU STICK TO IT. It’s the difference between those who choose to live their lives in prison (as criminals) and those who live as Christ did; with humility and love for God and his fellow man.

Every PTA film should be watched twice to understand it, which means the writing is great. I didn't know what the significance of the churning water would be, but i initially thought that the way the eddies develop made a sort of heart shape. Looking at it after this analysis, it links up beautifully with the time-travel theme. The boat, as i think Dodd even refers to it in the film, is life. There are these eddies left behind which swirl around because they are trying to catch up to the ship. Physically, eddies are the vortices which form from a pressure differential between the front of the ship and the rear - the ship pushes through water, which leaves a minor vaccuum behind it, sucking in some water and creating the eddies. I think Freddie is clearly the water (aimless, moldable, impossible to hold) while several other characters perform the role of ship, although Hoffman most obviously characterises it. The focus of the movie, as with the shot, is on Freddie, and what it means to be pulled into the undertow of something or someone else. It is mesmerizing, it is violent, it is never quite consummated as a relationship - the eddies will forever slip away from the ship because they lack internal drive, but if the ship slows to keep the eddy flowing then not only does the ship lose its momentum, but the eddy will also "lose interest" because the eddy is pure reaction, pure response to the ship's forward inertia. I think many people wish to be the ship, to forge themselves into the driving force which will pull the others in behind through power and magnetism, but we are all water. And to travel with someone is to live in the current with them, as Freddie did at the end, to the hurt of the still striving Dodd. The whirling dervish, so validating and beautiful to Dodd, that was pulled in behind has finally exited the turbulence and gone floating along. There is much more to this movie than just one metaphor, so i won't pretend this is everything, but it certainly seems to fit with the film's tone.
