I just heard this piece (for the first time) in another recording. The pianist was good, but I had problems appreciating his phrasings. So I started to listen to other recordings. Some were better in that regard, some not. But the pianist in this recording has a very nice way of phrasing the music. In my opinion the phrasing is just as it should be, perfect!

I keep imagining that this piano has some kind of special tuning. Mr Lim is nevertheless the genius! It is not each note that is flawless, but the entire piece is finely tuned in every way. Lizst went to 🎶🎵🎶🎶 heaven 😌 And I am just listening on the not very fine speaker on my cell phone.

He plays the second prelude so beautifully! Such great phrasing of the melody and voicing of the suspensions, makes it so mellifluous despite actually being a rather dissonant prelude.

C’est toujours la même histoire : ce charmant monsieur joue des notes, beaucoup de notes, très vite, de plus en plus vite et ne touche jamais à ce drame métaphysique, à cette tension sur l’abîme qui sont l’intérêt de la pièce. On a un travail certes brillant, avec toutes les notes et parfaitement vide. Aucun intérêt. C’est ripoliné et fade, si fade. Je comprends qu’il ait fait son show avec le 3e de Rachmaninov. Il va falloir songer à faire de la musique, pas seulement des gammes.

One question - Why does Liszt call this a waltz? No one plays it like a waltz - sounds more like a Mephisto fantasia. Yunchan Lim is a true virtuoso, by the way.

Beyond the time signature, it might have something to do with the mythological Mephisto Waltz from “Faust.” Likely, this was also him leaning into the common rumor that he had sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his prowess at the piano, much like Faust in the legend.

The waltz rhythm is almost dead in classical music. You can't tell when a waltz is being played unless you look at the title of the piece.
