Food additives in Japan are truly horrible even worse than the US. Trans fats are still used. I walked 7mi daily on my last trip to Japan and still gained weight. Because food was so cheap compared to when I came in 2018 due to exchange rates, I was able to eat so much more. Now in the US with expensive food, I am eating less and walk just as much here as in Japan. I actually am losing weight in America. As for the countryside of Japan, it depends how rich the Prefecture is, I found people were thinner in Saga and Oita but heavier in Tottori and Shimane. Not sure if it has to do with weather

Hi, Stephanie: Like yourself, I'm also trying to lose weight to get down to my right weight. Currently, I'm an American female Gaijin Samurai in training who is trying to develop a female Samurai's body for my training as a warrior. Eight months ago, I started out at 290 pounds and am now down to 237 pounds and continuing to lose the weight. I decided to start consuming Japanese food because it is the healthiest food that I have ever eaten, it has been doing wonders for my weight loss, including exercising.-All my best always

I’ve really enjoyed your videos. I moved to Tokyo last fall and being overweight and in my 30s I was really scared about how I’d be perceived. I don’t speak a lot of Japanese yet, so if people are making comments (especially rude comments) about me I wouldn’t even know what they’re saying 😂 since moving here I’ve received a lot of attention from men, much more than I did at home. I’m not looking to settle down at the moment but I’ve been really surprised how forward men have been and how many talk to me and ask for my contact information when I go out to bars. I am actively trying to lose weight because I still feel incredibly awkward and out of place, plus it’s harder to shop for clothing in-person.

I'm a black American. I lived in Nagoya for about 5 months while going to school there. I never got touched, never got stopped by police, and never really got any special treatment either. People admired that I was an American but that's about it. Maybe because Nagoya is a midsized city, it was normal to see people like me (though there weren't many). I jogged, went on dates with Japanese women, and went to Japanese grocery stores without any problems. It was quite nice.😌

Largely stagnant wages, minor increase in cost of living, western influences (esp portion size and cuisine), and a lot of more minor reasons all increase the rate of people reaching out for more processed caloricly dense foods cause cheaper. 80% of weight and health issues in first world countries is related to over consumption of calories and not using enough calories. People talk about the nutrition aspect of weight gain but they are STARKLY in the minority as a cause. It's always calories in, calories out. I think overall you're absolutely correct. One thing to note is that nutrition education in Japan from a science perspective is largely absent cause they indirectly taught it through lifestyle education where one of its indirect effects was calorie control (ie. eating a lot of varied, volume rich whole foods so you feel satiated without over-consuming calories ). If lifestyles in Japan change and shifts from wholefoods to caloricly dense processed foods, the science perspective of nutrition should be taught over lifestyle education to account for it.

Very true. The kids take home economics in elementary school. They are taught basics like how to cook rice or cut fruit. They also are pushed to finish their lunches and eat everything on the plate. But not so much about how that bowl of rice at lunch is around 350-450 calories. People looked at me crazy when I said I only want 1/2rice because it's to full of calories. When they want to lose weight it's the crazy 500 to 900 cal a day diet. From what I've been shown by people.

What is considered overweight in Japan is considered normal in the USA. Plus they are not into wokeness with all that body acceptance/positivity nonsense. You might get a few more overweight, obese people, but it is all in check because of 2 things 1) portion sizes (eat less, less calories) 2) exercise, move, walk more.
@tadashihatsudai
@tadashihatsudai 2 ай бұрын
Another factor that is likely driving up the numbers of overweight and obese people is likely due to people who are clinically obese and have weight related diseases while being a normal or borderline on the BMI scale (Japan using the different one from WHO to account for higher rates of diabetes and heart disease at lower weight). Also insulin resistance is fairly common due to carb heavy lifestyle so even if a Japanese person is burning off most of the calories through walking, they still get the negative effects of a sugar spike and reduced insulin sensitivity over time. I suspect more people will be diagnosed with weight/diet related illnesses sooner than later compared to western counterparts. It’s fairly more common to Japanese people, especially myself too, who don’t look like the usual people on “My 600 lb Life” having high risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, gallstones, etc. while being only being between 130-150 lbs (at 5 ft - 5’ 5” ft). Even now I still have to watch what I eat and it’s a bit tricker while living in the US. Plus if I want to exercise, I’d have to take the car in order to visit the gym. 💀
@my200lbjourney8
@my200lbjourney8 2 ай бұрын
I didn't know that information. Nobody talkes about that here. And everyone online just talks about how healthy it is here. The amount of rice people eat in on sitting is to much for me, I also have left over rice and people think I'm crazy. Ya it's tough in America for exercise. Here in Japan I can't justify to 10,000 yen price a month for a gym membership lol

My experience is that, you can pretty much lose weight doing whatever you want, but it’s usually particular things that cause failure. Like eating cake and drinking one day doesn’t suddenly make you fail, but if it’s Thursday and you ate something bad, or overate, then you say “ah I already screwed up, lemme start again on Monday” rinse and repeat then suddenly you’re completely off the rails and suddenly it’s 6 months later and either you’ve made no progress best case, or you put on weight. So consistency is probably the biggest factor, let yourself mess up, but hop back on asap. One time I ate Burger King for 2 months and lost 20 lbs.

I’ve always understood the specialty fruit prices as they’re grown very particularly and are great for special occasions or gifting to others, but the lack of overall accessibility is upsetting. I wish it was more common to sell imperfect looking fruits for a cheaper price. The expensive fruit is very perfect looking and nice, but cheaper produce should really also be available :(

Our town is lucky to have fruit farms. So during certain seasons you can get not beautiful looking fruit cheap from the farms. But it's only a few times a year. If you live in the city you would probably be less likely to get the cheaper fruits.

I’ve always put on more weight as I get older. You. You are AMAZING! You actually lost a ton of weight. And you are right. Healthy habits are hard to build. And our failure is how we learn. If you can afford it, please consider a multivitamins. And don’t you worry about any kind of diets. Just have some celeries, carrots, and your favorite salads handy. I hear that Apple vinegar can make a healthy dressing. And make amazing videos. Hundreds, thousands, for a million views. But do it while exploring. Explore short strolls that are amazing. And on that stroll, take the journey with your true love. Because you are worth sharing. And he is a treasure to have always.

I am a guy, 34, and for what I have learned about Japan, all this years watching vlogs of people there, and learning about the culture, like for example tatemae and honne, subbleties that are part of their culture. Girls have it harder, I as a guy can approach easily to any girl over there, assuming I am good at speaking Japanese (native like or closely). Many girls will interact with me because of them being culturally inclined to being polite, even if they are not interested on me. So, that is a possibility for me to work on stablishing bonds into a friendship in the least. That is something many girls will not accomplish easily specially at Japan, I'd say Japanese guys over there have it not easy at communicating their feelings, specially with the opposite sex, and I imagine being a foreigner that might be another factor that adds up. I have also heard of plenty of girls finding really weird encounters with males around there. So, I would keep it simple, to succeed over there, I would first make sure I am pretty confident at speaking, since that would allow me to move around and meet people, and at the same time not be seen as a "gaijin". You can tell on many vlogs on KZbin how foreigners are treated differently because of their communications skills. Also relating to highly educated people over there, culturally or intellectually speaking might be best. Since they are more accepting of other cultures, and likely not looking for only superficial relationships. That was exactly my plan when around there, to have the highest level of Japanese to be confident enough, to engage with people like me, to respect the culture (tatemae and honne), to engage in cultural activities around I am familiar with. Looking for people on apps only might get you weird people around just as what happened to her. Working out on an image is also very important, clothing, body weight, makeup, etc. In a way, I believe the expression, "what do you bring to the table?" applies very well over here assuming someone wants best of course. I constantly try to think about what can I improve even if little for me to succeed, specially in the long term. I myself am not looking for vain relationships with Japanese girls.

Apparently eating too much is no such a thing as a calorie count for what I know in relation to a "whole foods diet", since you can manage to lose weight still. I believe it is not like exactly losing weight, more rather than your body balancing the weight you currently have to "normalize" it. So, eating a whole food diet implies you can eat everything is considered that way, since processed food as well as animal products can not allow you to get rid of that weight easily. I believe there is plenty of research, but to me is a no brainer, if I were to lose weight for whatever reason (health, looks), then I would eat a whole foods diet. Since, I could eat as much as I would want to, for example, boiled yam, edamame, boiled soy, boiled tomatoes, carrots are considered as wholefoods, and I have no issues eating that way. Most of people are not into that because of mainly flavor, but once you got to your goal, you can eat normally as you would. There are people and info online that explain all that. It might help you lots, since it also is a diet that requires no exercise at all. I would happily eat my 3000 calories of yam, making sure I get my vitamins and minerals from supplements, to lose weight without even going to jog or to a gym.

No one ever talks about some of the rude behavior of some Japanese. YES, they aren't some perfect group, they are real actual people with good apples and bad apples, and good days and bad days like the rest of the world. Drives me nuts the way people visit for a week or 2 then can't stand to hear about any bad behavior from Japanese people. Or worse, they live and vlog in Japan and they think it's their duty to cover up or make excuses for any bad Japanese behavior. To be clear, I am a fan of Japan and my closest person (my wife) is Japanese, I am not a hater of Japan quite the opposite. Oh and good on you for working on your health, I myself am using a calorie counter app and increasing my cardio in an effort to get to my best weight. Ganbarimashou.
