How can one multiply a value e.g. 10 kg in this system? I don’t agree that one can handle the exponentials as entries in an vector 🤔.

Great video! Very well explained. I have a question. Is the amount of substance vector a representation of the unit quantity? i.e, 5 seconds would be (1,0,0,0,0,0,5/Avg#). Then any quantity of any unit could be defined by 7 values. Not sure if this is related to the vector thinking, or useful, but wanted to know your thoughts.

I have recently discovered the CGS units as well as natural units, and now my favorite system of units is the one with the 3 base units of Planck length, Planck mass, and Planck time. While not a practical system of measurement, I enjoy that all physical quantities, including electric current, temperature, mols, etc., can be broken down into units of mass, length, and time, and I enjoy that Planck units seem less anthropocentric. So really, I see all units as being 3 dimensional.

Amazing. Can you buy yourself anything by doing the same thing to the base encoding? I've always felt integer base systems were a mistake and that we should use base π or radians type thinking as default since it shows up naturally in so many domains.

That's why they say math is a language. As precise and agreed upon as the idea of mathematics is, it is still just one explanation out of a seemingly, quite possibly infinite amount.

Wait, no, mass is not a vector. The units of mass are a vector in unit-space. (“Mass is a vector” implies the property is a vector in space)

Why do physicists insist on saying "length" instead of "distance"? The mile and the kilometer are units of _distance_.
@asd-wd5bj3 ай бұрын
Because length is more general, both share the same units, but distance is specifically the length in space between two or more points on a straight line. Let's say I'm travelling up a hill that's a isoceles triangle with the base of 3 meters and height of 2 meters. The distance between the two sides of the hill then is 3 meters, because they are just 3 meters apart in space, but as a physicist i generally care about the length i would travel along the surface of the hill instead, which is 10 meters by the pythagoras theorem

Mass is NOT a vector. Vectors have a direction component but mass represents an amount of matter and has no direction. So for all of you who learnt something, learn from somewhere else!

Mathematically a scalar is just a vector with a single component, which results in it being invariant to changes in coordinates. The distinction between a scalar and a vector is entirely made up by physicists so that we know where to care about signs/coordinates and when not

As a layperson, I often come across videos thay end up being beyond my comprension. It usually goes in three stages. 1. "Oh, this is easy stuff." 2. "Okay, I think I may understand...." 3. "And you lost me. I dont understand." This video somehow existed in the second phase of the series from the start to the finish. It was odd to experience; like constantly falling off a tight-rope but it somehow staying under you.

It's the three lengths that get everyone. Radians ARE a 'unit'. Radians represent the missing or lost units when typically ratios of non-colinear lengths dimensions are cancelled with no residual indication that you've lost something. E.g I'm 2 radians taller than my daughter, but, what, wait...? And then there is the problem of the confusion between a 'dimension' and it's unit. Oh, and that scalars are 'independent' of other dimensions, so are countable... [edit].. thus we should have a 9 dimension vector of 'dimensions', rather than 7 because lengths count as three dimensions not 1.. Steradians for the win ;-)
