Definitely look up the practical applications of Shaolin Kung fu, tai chi, bagua Zhang, etc! It’s a good mix of traditional Chinese wrestling (Shuai Jiao) and of course punching, kicking, hands and leg techniques. What the beginning of the training sequence with aang and zuko could be similar to throwing someone over your hip. You take a deep stance to cut off their balance and use your own hip as an anchor. Or it could also be you’re breaking your opponents guard by using two hammer fists and following it up with a front kick and a punch on the same side or vice versa. This is all just a guestimation!
