How does the liquid stay inside without spilling? Is it because of the burn wood that scelle the wood or you glueing them together with something?

There’s so much that goes into making Tennessee whiskey that is practically impossible to make it with this barrel kit. You have to do the Lincoln county process, use a specific barrel (charred oak), has to have a certain proof and ABV, and Also has to be made in Tennessee. Mostly the Same way with bourbon. This barrel kit is really just a flavoring kit.

I recently purchased a barrel from Tequila, Mexico, and have since filled it with water. I intend to add tequila to the barrel, but I am concerned about what to do if I end up using some of the tequila and the barrel is left half full. Should I add more tequila to top it off and store it, or can I leave it half full without compromising its quality? Your expert advice would be greatly appreciated.

You should top it off and keep drinking. Although it dilutes the age each time you add to it you can keep using the barrel over a long time. The other option is age it till you get the taste you like then put it in a bottle and start another batch. Either way is good but I usually top off and drink from the barrel. Unless you want something different then get another barrel or empty the one and put something different in after. It will take in the tastes from the previous liquor inside the barrel. Thanks for following.

I store my homemade wine vinegar in a miniature barrel and use it from there. I don’t make it in the barrel. It is convenient to use from the barrel. Is there a problem with that?

What about the sulpur tablets for wine? I understand they need to be dangled in the airgap above the wine. I guess I need to be careful about overfilling so the tablet doesn't contact the wine? Am using a 50 litre chestnut barrel. Greetings from Spain.

G'day, Sir! I've been itching to try this myself, but I've been cautioned against using 40% ABV spirits, because "you'll extract more water soluble compounds faster than you'd find if you use cask strength spirits. Can go kinda sideways and taste off. " . . . Do you have any experience with lower proof spirits? Or should I be aiming for the 50-70% ABV home distiller forum's seem to recommend?

I've read after three or four fills it's best to take apart and scrape old charr off and rechar it. Barley and Hopsters has a video where he used electric tape on either ends with the rings off to hold everything together as you lay it out with the rings off. That's what I'm going to try

Couldn’t you just have the barrels up on their bottoms instead of on their side when aging? What’s the purpose of storing a barrel in its side instead of upright?

Just received my barrel and will be filling it in January. I will be ordering another for my 70th birthday. Why start aging at 60 and 70? I was a paratrooper and had an accident. Shortly after my accident, my Dr. said I'd be in a wheelchair by 30, I was 22 at the time. I am bout 6 weeks from my 60th birthday and still on my feet, mostly. This is your answer for 60. Bout a year after my Dr. told me that, another Dr. Told me, by the time I'm 35, I'd be in so much pail, I'd beg to have my legs cut off. At 60, I double my time on my feet and at 70, I double my time with my legs. I can't spit in their eye, but I can celebrate shear determination. On my 60th, I will be filling my new barrel and at my wake, my people can celebrate one crazy little bastard, who would not quit. I am designing my wake to be one hell of a party, stop by and check how well your barrels did their aging job. Oh, I been talking to God for bout 60 years, he says I have till I'm 150. How do you think the shine I'm putting in, will taste in 90 years?

Yes - This is normal. Imagine putting your thumb on top of a straw thats sitting in water. It doesn't flow out of the bottom unless you remove your thumb. Same concept.

I own two barrels one is a Red head . both leaked when I received them the main difference was that the Redhead was varnished, after filling with water in a short time they both sealed up all good. I filled each barrel with 100 proof spirits and waited patiently, after a couple of weeks I took a sample from each barrel and there was a distinct difference in taste , the Redhead barrel had a distinct odor of paint thinner or something comparable , not good. The only thing I can think of that may have caused it is that some of the varnish leaked into the barrel and was dissolved into the spirits. I’ve reached out to the company but have not heard back yet. In conclusion I would say if you buy a barrel from anyone that is varnished take some high proof spirits you can discard (everclear would work) and rinse the inside of your barrel (time?) and throw it away so you don’t have to throw away good whiskey like me.
