I choose to believe that he actually tried to off himself because those directives were mentally torturing him. He failed (or was prevented), but it unintentionally cooked the new programming, so he felt better and just decided to get on with work.

I re watched this film again last night. There are moments of real brilliance in this script. I see what Miller was going for and at times the film nails it. The scene where Robo comforts the kid crime boss as he dies is also profoundly affecting. Even after he did such despicable things to Murphy, in his moment of death, he receives compassion. The film was a bit before its time in 1990. But it’s still wildly uneven.

The way he just gets up and walks off makes it look as if he was thinking "FINE! I'LL GO ELECTROCUTE MYSELF THEN!"

The best solution for a woke Robocop! They anticipated the future 30 years in advance!

I've only watched this movie a few times when I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade... decades ago lol. But re-watching it as an adult recently I've never realized how important this seen was. He didn't just delete the junk directives, but the three primary ones as well. Robocop is truly operating via his own free will/humanity and not any programming from this point on

haha, those directives are basically what cops have to go through in 2024. Which is why they are all quitting because after going through all that, they are let out of jail few hours later and they get to repeat the whole thing dozens of times. Why bother?
