Now that you've done a review of Cubitron II, would you consider doing a review based on grit type i.e. garnet, flint, aluminum oxide, zirconia, ceramic alumina, ceramic zirconia, and silicone carbide. Having been a fan of 3M Cubitron II, I was appalled that the price has more than doubled in 2 years since I started buying and using it so I started looking for something as durable or more durable. I've so far settled on silicone carbide imported from China because I do a lot of sanding of various oak and elm species and because the longevity is significant. A hard wood like Post Oak or Winged Elm can be very time consuming with the wrong sandpapers. Cost is significant as well as Cubitron II costs about 85 cents per disc (5" 8 hole) but I've found silicone carbide sourced through Amazon to be only about 19 cents per disc and the longevity is better than the Cubitron II. Thanks!

One other thing I’ve found with the Cubitron is if you so much as show them the edge of something, you can kiss that disc goodbye. And I’m not even talking about the side of a board or trying to chamfer something, I mean even if you go over the lip of something it’s going to crease and eventually tear. I’ve never had one stay in one piece long enough to see if the cutting action does last longer than other papers.

I'd say this is because of the edge banding on your piece putting tension to close the kerf. You could clamp the cutoff the fence to prevent it from flying off for future cuts.

Nice build. I'm not a huge fan of pocket holes. You could save yourself some build time using less pocket holes and add glue and brad nails to hold the pieces in place before using the pocket holes. Glue would also strengthen the cabinet.

Haven’t use it on drywall. My guess is you might be somewhat disappointed with the dust collection on drywall. On wood, I find standard sanding discs to perform better dust collection-wise.

Crazy question here. I am building several work stations in my one car garage; mitersaw, tablesaw, jointer, and planer (Planer and jointer are "portable" models, Wen / HarborFreight) - I have been obssessing over the bench I put my jointer and planer on be perfectly level, but my garage at the ends of the wall have a tilt toward the center for the drain. Am I worrying too much about this? I was going to use adjustable feet, so far thats been a pain. I want to use casters but I guess that would mean I'd need to move it towards the center to get it level - but thats kind of what I've been trying to avoid. The garage is so narrow that having to move them in and out when needed feels chaotic. Thoughts? I also used particle board for my tables lol. And then just like you, halfway through, got worried about the stability and added reinforcement on the back.
@maplebirchstudio
@maplebirchstudio Жыл бұрын
There’s nothing accuracy-wise ensuring a level table will do for you regarding these tools. So long as the jointer beds are co-planer it will do it’s job just fine. The planer needs its infeed and outfeed tables to be level with one another, but level to the floor doesn’t matter. As benchtop-style tools they likely came out of the box perfect or extremely close to perfect regarding this (the planer would be the most likely to need some adjustment on the feed tables, especially if you had to install them as part of the set up. But you would use these tools on a substantial slope and it won’t impact their performance in terms of accuracy. You may want to ensure they are well secured to prevent the tool from vibrating off the table if there’s a slope, but that’s a few screws or bolts through the pre-drilled holes these tools already have for this very reason. Good luck with the rest of the build!

Project looks good! Any reason you didn’t put the pocket holes on the inside of the cabinets so it would look nicer? What is the apron you’re wearing? I dig it!
@maplebirchstudio
@maplebirchstudio Жыл бұрын
Technically the recommendation for pocket holes is to place them on the outside of the two boards, but I’ve broken this rule plenty of times with no problems to the project. In this case for me, placing them outside was merely for convenience. I’m pretty sure placing them inside would work fine. The apron is an ecozen I think you can still find them on Amazon.

Do you get any push and pull when using the 3m sand paper compared to festool a sandpaper? I notice when I switch to the 3m sandpaper with the mesh pad it moves around more.
@maplebirchstudio
@maplebirchstudio Жыл бұрын
I haven’t noticed and more push/pull vs using Festool sandpaper (primarily use granat). I’ve used the 3m mesh paper on the Rotex, ETS-EC 150/3, and ETS-EC 150/5 and I didn’t notice any difference from when I’ve used granat paper on these sanders. I’ve used the soft, extra soft, and hard sanding pads with both Festool paper and 3m as well.

Hate to say it but I discovered this trick on day one, albeit accidentally. I never like to put my sander on its pad because it can rock back and deform the pad, so I just put my Festool 125 in the hose notch and it fit like it was intentional! Is it an accidental thing? I doubt it as Festool does nothing accidentally.

What I do to line my paper up, and that has been very effective is that I bend it slightly so that two holes are in the bend. I line up these two to the sander's hole and make contact. I then release the sides of the disc and make sure it's sticking properly. Worked quite well for me. Reapplying them in case I wasn't lined up is also easier as there's only a "slim line" that's hooked up.

I wonder if an axial fan blowing a curtain of air down at the front of the box would prevent some dust from going in the shop? Kind of like the things they have at the entrance doors of large stores? Also, it looks like some holes around the perimeter of the box might be useful to just suck in some of those chips and shavings.

Now this is awesome, I'm not sure this would work but would a short wall on the open side help keep the dust from being thrown out or maybe moving the work piece farther into the box? stupid question from a non-woodworker.
@maplebirchstudio
@maplebirchstudio Жыл бұрын
The short wall idea might work in some situations. The angle you're holding the angle grinder will impact its effectiveness I would think. I did go back and forth on ideas that might help prevent wood chips from existing through the front, but I was worried about running into limitations on workpiece size if I put something in the front that attempted to block wood chips. I could have set the work piece further inside to box. In my head the fewer holes I block the better. That's an unproven theory.

One sander is designed to be an aggressive removal sander while the other is a lighter finishing sander. So the point was to compare very aggressive non-Cubitron sandpaper on an aggressive removal sander to moderately aggressive Cubitron paper on a lighter finishing sander.
@Bob_Adkins
@Bob_Adkins Жыл бұрын
I hear you on the finish. The Cubitron Extract leaves a microscopic fuzz or "nap" which I guess is from cutting through the wood fibers at 90 degrees. Also, Cubitron cuts so fast that you only need 80, 180, and 320. The 120, 150, and 220 do nothing those 3 won't do. I'm going to try a roll of 320 with a 3"x16" hook-and-loop block sander, sanding with the grain. If it's as fast as I think, I won't miss my orbital for the final finish.

Bro! Lay off the pocket holes!! I think you have a problem with pocket holes.. also they’re meant to be used inside the build and out of sight. It’s a solid design but Major cringe on the aesthetics of your build. Also never use particle board for any cabinetry or medium to heavy duty projects.

Hi, thanks for the video. I’ve saw Oneida note on their website they do not recommend using Supercell with PVC ducting. Have you had any issues? My existing setup is also PVC but I think Supercell is a good match for my needs. I’m on the fence 🤷‍♂️
@maplebirchstudio
@maplebirchstudio 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, my ducting is PVC (schedule 40) and there’s occasional static shock here and there but noting any more serious than I ever had with previous dust collectors. I’m in Vermont where winter is extremely dry and static electricity is higher in general, and it wasn’t an issue during Winter months. I also have a non-grounded system because I’m in the camp that says it won’t make a difference. In fact I find the vac hose running from my CNC to a standard shop vac creates WAY more static electricity than the ducting to the Supercell ever has, and I run a lot more wood chips through the Supercell ducting.
