Hey, Shad! Question for you: How do you feel about drivetrains/brakes/component sizes matching between your different mtbs? Is that something you care about? Is that something you specifically seek out or specifically avoid? At this time, other than my bars (one of my bars/stems is 31.8mm and the other is 35mm) all of my parts between the bikes could be swapped back-and-forth. Essentially, I have two bikes making any broken part easily replaceable. To be fair, I'm only two bikes deep into this whole mtb thing - a hardtail and a 120mm trail bike - but I'm not sure if I'm better off having matching/interchangeable components (so we have zero downtime if something breaks) or if it's better to try a bunch of different parts to look for whatever might be good/bad. For me, I'm not really a huge bike tinkerer guy. I'd much rather ride my bike than anything else with it. Of course, that may change over time but I specifically chose the build of the second bike to be mostly compatible with the first one to make sure I could swap pieces back and forth if a part breaks.
@ShadLife
@ShadLife Күн бұрын
This is an excellent question and valid points about compatibility. I rate things in order of importance. Most important is bike fit. Then geometry comes very close second. Those 2 things matter more than anything else when I choose a bike/frame. If those things are not where I need/want them to be the bike will not be comfortable or ride the way I want it to. From there I choose weight as the next important thing as I don't like my bikes to be overly heavy, I want them to feel relatively light and nimble. I say relatively because depending on what I intend to use the bike for, it might need to be stronger and more beefed up thus weigh a little more. Now we get to the component compatibility/standards. I refuse to buy a frame or bike with a press fit bottom bracket. That's the worst idea ever. I do wish seat posts, bars, brake mounts, and all of that stuff was all standardized. I don't think seat post diameter really ever has been since the mid 90s and maybe even not then. For the most part brake mounts, head tubes, stems, bottom brackets (PF excluded), thru axles and dropout widths have mostly become standardized. Boost is more common, but there is Super Boost on a few brands which I feel isn't needed. Of course Fat Bikes are a bit all over the place as far as standards go. So yeah, it can be painful. All and all I feel like we have settled into a good place over the last 8ish years. But the compatibility issues before that were a nightmare because things kept changing every couple of years. Hopefully things stay where they are for a while now. I don't see any major need to change things. E-Bikes are annoying because a frame is made specific to a particular motor. So if you want a specific frame but want a Bosch CX motor and battery, but that frame has a Shimano motor and battery....you are stuck with Shimano. It's annoying the bicycle manufacturers haven't demanded a standard motor mount and even a standard battery output so batteries can be interchangeable. But that's a whole other story...🤷‍♂️

And ebike hub motor is too heavy for a tire that soft on snow when you turn yr tire could come off the bead,you can make them 10 to 12 psi on snow with a heavy hub motor
@ShadLife
@ShadLife 4 күн бұрын
Yeah, I don't have an eBike and certainly not a Fat Bike or one with a hub motor. So your concern doesn't apply. I wouldn't want to ride e fat bike with a heavy hub motor in the snow because the added weight would just make the rear wheel dig in and certainly ruin the trail for everyone else.

GT killed itself for many reason but not because they moved their frame building overseas. The main reason which I agree was "quantity over quality" was their downfall in the late 90's. But let's be real. Bike brands moved to having their bikes built overseas in Asia isn't a bad thing. Sure we lose jobs over here but guess what? In the US labor costs is more expensive. Continue to build here in the US then most bikes will be out of reach including the walmart/target bikes. The other thing is, Asia produces the best bikes. Their R&D and factories are better as they are years ahead of us. So not only is it cheaper but better for the consumer over all. Brands like Enve and Chris King are still made in the US but guess what? They still are a small fraction of the bike industry and they also cost a lot and they don't offer "entry level" bikes which brands like Trek, Cannondale, Giant and Scott do.
@ShadLife
@ShadLife 7 күн бұрын
Actually, back when bicycles used to be mass produced here in the United States people were paid better liveable wages and the bicycles were affordable. Remember Schwinn? Huffy also used to make their bikes here. Yep, affordable and US made before they started outsourcing to Asia in the late 70s and early 80s. GT and Cannondale mass produced affordable bikes all the way through the 90s. When you have the facilities to be able to mass produce products you can make them affordable in the United States. The problem is, bigger companies wanted to make higher profits. It's the shareholders and those who want to not just make a profit, but continue increasing them that cause outsourcing. They want you to think it's because of higher labor costs, but it's not and it never has been. It's far more closer to greed. And the bicycle industry isn't the only industry impacted by this. It's pretty sad really. And yeah, today Asia makes the best quality bicycles because the U.S. companies basically handed to them. They literally sent experts over there to show them how to do it and they did quality control.
@liquidSpin
@liquidSpin 7 күн бұрын
@@ShadLife Yeah, but I remember my parents telling me the Huffy that I wanted was too expensive but yeah totally agree with what you said about if we had more factories here to make the bikes then they would get cheaper. It makes me wonder what bikes would be like today had most major American brands stayed in the US. But I can't help but think about how things would cost the american consumer if it wasn't produced overseas....such as clothes. Definitely not advocating for sweatshop labor but would clothes made in the US (due to capitalism be even more expensive?) This world isn't fair sometimes haha

Very interesting. However, at 6:40 where you say your contact with the grips is towards your index fingers would indicate that you rather need more sweep than less. No? I was watching this because I get sore wrists at the outer part of the joint or the cuff. And interesingly, I also contact my grips towards my index fingers. I ride with a 9 degrees bar and my reaction would be to look for something like a 12 degrees one or more.... I don't know I am slightly confused now, any thoughts?
@ShadLife
@ShadLife 14 күн бұрын
If my index finger is contacting and the grip goes back away from my pinky finger without me having to awkwardly turn my wrists outward that means I need less backsweep. If your bars put more contact on your pinky and less on your index fingers, then you need more backsweep. What you can do to change hand position on the bars is rotate your elbows outward away from your body. This will flatten your hands for less backsweep. If you bring your elbows in close to your sides this will rotate your hands outward and require more backsweep. Everyone is built a bit different. I personally feel very uncomfortable with my elbows in close to my body. My natural position and more comfortable feel is with my elbows out slightly. The bigger issue is, few companies make flatter bars and most are 8 - 13 degrees backsweep which doesn't feel great to me. BMX freestyle bars are all 11 - 13 degrees which is why I run the flatest race BMX bar I can find. But then they are not as strong. I was running 3 degree backsweep BMX race bars and loved how they felt. But then they cracked so now I am using 13 degree backsweep and I hate them.

Unless your mechanically inclined buying a cheap bike and upgrading it is not feasible. I got into fat biking with a Mongoose dolomite ALX. However I had a bunch of leftover parts to throw at it from my parts bin. So I didnt even ride it in stock form . I put some shimano brakes and a BOX ONE drive-train on it. I did spring for some studded 45North tires. Plus I had some lighter stem, bars and seatposts. Its hovering around 35lbs now. Not the lightest but it gets the job done when I have an itch to go out in the snow.

One of the main reasons I don’t want to buy a full suspension, especially not a mass production Asian made plastic frame. I agree that that the Ripley would be a much better option for full suspension. Not sure about the Norco but the aluminum rear triangle is a bonus. For sure my next bike will be a mullet setup. As for my next purchase is either the Esker Ti Hayduke or the Stanton Ti Sherpa plus and build up a rigid SS. I don’t have an eBike but understand the benefits. Just not interested in to going down that route.

I pulled all the bearings from my old Spectral when I got a warranty frame replacement. Even with the correct tools the flanged bearings in the rear eroded my will to live, and with the percussive abuse they took in the process I couldn't keep them as spares.

As an old BMXer myself (Still have my ELF Doublecross cruiser), I am a bit sad about the GT debacle and understand where you are coming from. However, saying that they have been trash since the turn of the century is not actually 100% accurate. Case in point is the GT Grade Carbon gravel bike. The GT Grade Carbon has been recognized in the past by multiple publications and websites. One notable award was given by BikeRadar, which named the GT Grade "Gravel Bike of the Year" in 2020 and the GT Grade Carbon Pro LE in 2024. They also had to fire many pro riders they were sponsoring, showing they were at some level supporting the industry. I just think they deserve credit where credt is due. In the end, I realllllly hope they come back with a bang!

A few years back, I tried my hand at making some guitar repair/building videos. I quickly found that I could either do the work or make a video, but seldom had the time to set up the video for getting the work done in the time I had to do it and actually do justice to the work. So after that I totally get people not making videos about things, and I really value those who are able to do so and are good at it.

Didn't even consider you were dealing with carbon with the bearings, feels like a whole other level of stress on top of how hacky it can be. I haven't been mountain biking much since ebikes have taken off in the last few years, are they allowed on MORC trails or is a locality thing? I think I saw Dakota county some classes of ebike were legal anywhere a normal bike is but it's been a few years since I've looked.

Almost all trails allow class 1 eBikes (pedal assist up to 20 MPH). Class 2 and 3.are mixed. E-Motos are definitely not allowed (like Sur Ron) as they are bicycles, they are motorcycles.
