Thank you! I finally found a Blueberry pruning video that explains all my pruning concerns, and is easy to understand. I'm saving this one to my Garden Tips Playlist so I can brush up just before pruning time.

All wild blackberries in California have a major major orange rust outbreak! ALL WILD BLACKBERRIES WILL NOT PRODUCE BERRIES!!! Is this intentional?

Is it safe to eat the berries that aren't affected by the actual mold if the entire patch has botrytis fruit rot? Or is the whole harvest bad even if some berries look healthy?
@ARfruitvegАй бұрын
Fine to eat berries that aren't affected.

Many suggest removing limbs that are closer than 6" from the ground to reduce diseases. Does the black cloth protect the plants enough so that is not necessary? Thanks.
@ARfruitvegАй бұрын
The plastic will provide some protection but there can still be some splashing from the row middles.

Hi Prof. please can you send me an email address to contact you. I need to learn about blackberries. I am from South Africa and we have very little knowledge here on the Blackberry subject. I and my group live in a mountainous area with winter frosts and there are many acres of wild blackberries that came in with settlers more than a hundred years ago.

Do the same rules apply to northern type blueberries? The same aggressive pruning?

Why are you not adressing the fact that you're monocropping a large area in lots of plastic? Seems like the bigger issue here.

Have your soil tested for ph level and use at least 90% elemental sulfer and acid base fertilizer, this the only way, your native soil acts a ph buffer and those amendments will have little to no effect on the ph. All of my information can be confirmed from UT agriculture department.

How much space is there in the row 3 feet? 5 feet? I cannot tell. Also, how much space in between the rows? Thank you!
@ARfruitveg3 ай бұрын
We recommend 3 feet between plants and 10-12 feet between rows.

My blueberry patch sight is only going to be prepared for a couple months ahead of planting, think the PH will be adjusted by then? I wonder if I should plant my bareroot blueberry plants I ordered in containers until PH is in range.
@ARfruitveg3 ай бұрын
It is likely that the pH will not be fully adjusted from any sulfur you have applied in the previous 1-2 months, particularly if the soils are still cool. However if the soil is warm the pH will start changing and continue to drop over time. If the pH is very far outside the ideal range you may want to wait to plant, but if it started out between 5.0-5.7 or so you are probably ok to go ahead and plant.

A well done and very clear explanation of blueberry pruning. When I look at my blueberry bushes and their twiggy brushy tops covered with blossoms, I find it difficult to prune them. But after watching this video, and thinking about the small fruit they produce each year ...I think I will now find it much easier to make the necessary pruning cuts.
@danfarnsworth53683 ай бұрын
But is it too late to prune after the blossoms have opened?

Please answer this question. Is it true that southern highbush and rabbiteye varieties cannot cross pollinate to produce a bigger harvest? If so, why is that?
@ARfruitveg3 ай бұрын
You should select another rabbiteye type to ensure cross pollination on rabbiteye blueberries. Rabbiteyes will bloom later than most southern highbush types which is the main reason for this recommendation, and the bloom times must overlap for cross pollination to occur. It is possible for southern highbush to pollinate rabbiteye, but better fruit set and size occurs when the same type is used.

What if I cut off flower buds in the pink stage? I want to plant into a bigger pot. I think it was in year 2. I bought the plant from the nursery this way.

you can remove flowers in the pink stage to allow the plant to focus on root growth and development

I bough a few blueberry plants from my local nursery. One of them had many leaves and flower buds, looked like it was in year 3. pruned it all back because I want to put it in a slightly bigger pot to establish root growth. Is this a good time to do that? Norther Ca zone 9.

When the plant is dormant is a good time to cut it back and repot

I'm 23 and im pruning my parents bushes they planted when my brother was born in 1996 for the first time ever haha. They are insanely tall, dense, so many old thick canes. My loppers weren't sharp/strong enough for a lot of the canes but we'll get em lol

Hopefully you see this, im in a Zone 9B in Arizone, planted a PA Freedom last year, it put out lots of canes, Question, should i prune off all or most or none of last years growth?, as its late Feb. and seeing new laterals on last years csnes coming ng to life., no new Prima canes , yet. Still in the learning stage, will buy a few more low chill varieties, we get 200-300 cill hours.
@ARfruitveg4 ай бұрын
Hello, you can leave the canes that are now starting to leaf out and they will fruit a few months from now, then you will get a second crop on the new primocanes later in summer/ fall. We have a pruning video for primocane fruiting blackberry coming soon! Stay tuned! PA Freedom is a great choice for your amount of chill hours
