That was an interesting mix of vehicles Matt passed on the way back t the front - including the unexpected '64 Studebaker Daytona!

Those must have been the days. Taking your muscle car to a Can-Am race. A series with little regulations, huge engines, huge power, huge noise, limitless innovations to be discovered, and unpredictability in mechanical or driver. Then it was gone. I was born in the wrong era.

Wonderful film with great commentary, and we are fortunate to be able to view it. Sure wish the owners of these cars still brought them out for vintage racing here in the East. FWIW, #32 identified late in the film as a Lola is probably a Lotus 11 or 15.

I attended all of these Trans Am races and they were great fun. But cheaters like R. Penske make the sport have a very bad image. He cheated massively probably on all his races throughout his life. sad !

Ahhh. The last of the real American Auto Racing. I was a boy with a year or two before I got my drivers license. Watch as the pony cars of Detroit punched it out on road courses across America. Today’s racing is just so sanitized and corrupted with big money. Then as you can see in this video. Raw talent and shoestring budgets brought out the best racing ever. SCCA Trans-Am racing was a nitch in time. Now all we have are the memories of what was an awesome time to witness live in real time. When Detroit ruled and young boys dreamed of owning a piece of that pie. I lived in NASCAR country NC. But even I understood what a great platform SCCA had.

That's great to hear of your memories of that special era. I was only six years old in 1970 , and living in New Zealand, so I knew nothing of the Trans Am series at that time. But in NZ we had the same sort of racing, with 1960's and early seventies Camaro's, mustang's, etc ? ,well into the 1970's, and despite not having direct contact with this racing, and very little of it on TV , somehow I just knew about what was going on . I recommend checking out on KZbin, the current muscle car racing in Australia and NZ , "Touring car masters " in Australia, and "Central muscle cars" in New Zealand. The cars are, old , Mustang's, Camaros, a couple of Challenger's, a Cuda , Falcon's, Comet's, ect , modified with modern NASCAR type high horsepower engines, modern brakes, steering etc .They race very hard , and plenty of damage is done .🙂

Good to see a Camaro winning in 1970 since Penske switched with Javelin that year. I attended the Mont-Tremblant race this same year.

What a lovely film, calmly and informatively delivered by the commentator. So much better than the forced hysteria of modern commentry. I wish I had a barn in which I could find a Can-Am car, it was the best formula ever and no racing car is ever going to look or sound better again.

The guy claiming these are exactly what was raced back in the day is not being honest. A lot of parts are just not available. I watched an interview with a guy who prepared some of these cars. There are some significant differences. Availability of engine blocks and heads was a serious concern. These cars are running much newer parts. The safety cages are much better. The brakes are better. In some cases the engine is a larger displacement. The focus was more on providing track performance that was on par with the cars that were raced back when, while making the cars safer and easier to control on track and more reliable. These are "new" race cars with reproduction sheet metal. The right brand of engine under the hood and a transmission of the same type that was used. The overall configuration is the same. The drivers are instructed to be courteous and safe and run the cars at about nine tenths. Contact between cars should be avoided as much as possible. Bump passing is not allowed. Spirited driving with all the glorious sounds of racing is the order of the day.

Need to braking much later, and holding the RPM steady through the corners. It seems like a nervous habit that's slowing you down and upsetting the drivetrain. I also noticed that I think your close ratio trans isn't a good choice this track. You seem to run out of gear/motor at the end of longer portions, a wide ratio trans and a little less rear gear would be a help.

I’ve had my 1969L 71 Corvette for 55 years. In my humble opinion, these are still one of the best looking cars ever produced. Mine is still fairly original with the 32 barrel holly carburetors, 427 in.² inch and 435 hp Motors bumped up to around 520. It truly is old-school and even at 77 years old, it’s still the most fun car to drive that I’ve ever owned and that’s why I’ve kept it all these years.
