I think Tristan Act Three is Windgassen's finest achievement. The quality of his voice is more appropriate here than elsewhere and he is able to meet the musical and vocal challenges head on.

Varney was always riveting to watch. When she first sang this at Covent Garden she was amazing because the voice was still in very good condition. I listen to that broadcast often ,Collier being a good Jenufa. This video is a wonderful archive of great conductor and some great singers.

Windgassen war Klasse ,ganz grosse sogar..aber heute gibt es auch tolle Sänger..Demokratie ist auch hier gefragt.. nicht jeder empfindet und hört gleich..Jeder ist sein eigener Kosmos....

Fritz lived to 80! What a shame Wolfgang died at 60. He was scheduled to sing Tristan in San Francisco with Birgit that season.

It’s obvious he learned how to sing from his father. Their effortless resonance is obvious. Their approach to the lvoiced consonants is exactly the same.

This is a valuable document. Recorded just a year after the 1966 Bayreuth performance which remains the greatest Tristan on disc to this day. Such gorgeous, effortless, resonant singing.

Astrid Varnay is riveting here. 30 years into her career and high B still spot on. Her voice was thrilling in the house. Unfortunately when she returned to the Met in this role a few years later the ringing core of her voice was gone. She was still riveting to see but her voice was problematic.

Kraus does not only perform Werther but he IS Werther! Such brilliant interpretation and performance combined with perfect singing in technique and style will not be reached again. Kraus is my favorite Werther followed by Nicolai Gedda!

The same here. I saw Gedda's Werther, the singing impeccable, but Still I couldn't understand why Werther had to commit suicide., but after watching Kraus , my mind understood Werthel was very sick of love.

Nun ja, so hat man den Tannhäuser vor 60 Jahren gesungen, sehr theatralisch und ein wenig langweilig,. Es fehlt das rebellische,das ich bei Kaufmann in einer tollen Aufnahme gehört habe

…für den Tannhäuser fehlt Herrn Kaufmann die Grundvoraussetzung, die Stimme. Oder wie die SZ schrieb, , was er darstellt, haben die Großen früher gesungen…

Aha, Kaufmann hat also keine Stimme, hat er dann die schweren rollen in den besten opernhäusern gehustet oder gepfiffen? Es sollten wirklich nur Rezensenten beurteilen, die etwa von Musik verstehen! Siehe Georg Kreisler!!
