can i just remove the washer altogether and rely on the concrete?
@TheRocketeer
@TheRocketeer 12 күн бұрын
You can skip the washer, but the extreme temperatures will erode concrete. You could use only concrete and skip the divergent, which would allow more material to absorb the heat.

@@TheRocketeer I'm for sure gonna try this on my own rockets, I was looking for a cheap way to make a nozzle that doesn't burn up immediately and that isn't entirely made of metal. 👍

I’ve seen this on their website, it’s a cool idea probably more so for those flying cardboard airframes and not using dual deployment. Zippers usually occur due to high speed separation prior to or after apogee or from not using a wide enough recovery harness. Glad you pointed where to properly locate the ball on the harness.
@TheRocketeer

Even with dual deployment, the top of the airframe tends to accumulate damage over time. Just this past weekend, I watched as my dual-deploy rocket free-fell 20 feet before the shock cord fully stopped it. Thanks for your comment.

A leather hole punch might be a way to get a nicer, more regular hole though the ball-one that will be less prone to tearing over time. I am surprised the manufacturer doesn't pre-punch the ball.

I know this is bit of a older video but what are your thoughts on using 2 ematches in the igniter to insure a light
@TheRocketeer
@TheRocketeer Ай бұрын
Using two e-matches may be sufficient, depending on the motor's core size. A dipped e-match burns longer, which is important, and hurls burning aluminum balls into the core of the grain.

"Lipo batteries are great, but you have to charge them. So instead, I use a USB-charged battery with unknown internal charging and buck/boost circuitry." Joshing aside, great video! Love the pill bottles, I'm going to have to pick some of those up for the next build. I have a pair of Eggtimer Quantums to set up in a proper LOC kit, which will be my first dual deploy setup with redundancy. I love that the eggtimers can arm remotely with wifi from the phone, but I will be adding a rotary switch too just to make sure there are no objections to my setup at the field...thanks for the suggestions!

Do you wire both of your Altimeters to one switch? I have been wiring up two switches......Didn't realize that you could do this with one? Is there an advantage to just the one switch besides AV space? Thanks for your amazing videos...I have learned a ton!!!!!! :)
@TheRocketeer
@TheRocketeer Ай бұрын
Yes, I use one switch to power both altimeters. Two circuits are closed when the rotary switch is turned to the 220 position. Use a continuity tester to verify the pins. I have seen a number of very large rockets use one switch. True redundant dual deployment would require two switches. It seems unlikely to me both poles would fail at the same time. I find the most common failures are, low battery, poor connection, and failed e-match due to a short or defective part.

For the batteries, look for disposable vape pens, they have single cell lipo batteries of varying sizes, you can wire them in parallel for more capacity and in series for more voltage, these will need balance charge leads

That battery with the built in charger is awesome. I would love to be able to use that but unfortunately, I'm using the EggTimer Apogee controller and it needs a 1S Lipo at 3.7V. I used the Altus Metrum EasyMini a few years ago until I had an ejection failure and it pummeled into the ground and it turned into $80 of tiny bits.

I appreciate the guide. I have zero idea how to even get started into DD. How would you compare DD vs something like the Jolly Logic?
@TheRocketeer
@TheRocketeer Ай бұрын
That is a great question and here are my thoughts. I use the Jolly Logic chute release on a Level 1 style rocket and dual deployment on an L2 rocket. I use the chute release on an H - I flight with motor ejection. It's simple and works well. A L2 rocket will be larger and heavier so it will benefit from a larger chute that requires more black powder to move everything out of the payload bay. Shear pins should be used on the nosecone so it is not bumped out at apogee. An apogee deployment will result in a long walk followed by much grumbling 😎 JL chute release tips. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5Dao2CNg9OMmac This is an electronics bay I built a few years ago. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoG5k4yEfbSrq9U Ground testing is mandatory! kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6DTlGminMySnaM

What was the first mix ratio of fuel and sugar? 165 grams you had made?
@TheRocketeer
@TheRocketeer 2 ай бұрын
Sugar rocket fuels work best with a 65/35 oxidizer-to-fuel ratio. For flexi-fuel that would be 65% potassium nitrate, 18% Karo syrup and, 17% sucrose.

@MaxHackbarth 2 ай бұрын
What's the distance you have between the top of the rotary switch and the surface of the inside of the bay? I was thinking of using one of these for my level 2 certification and was wondering what the minimum distance between the two could be so I don't make a pressure-related mistake
@TheRocketeer
@TheRocketeer 2 ай бұрын
All of my switches have been mounted very close to the airframe. A small 1/8 - 3/16 hole can be drilled on the opposite side where my altimeter is located to help balance the airpressure out.
