I wonder when this video was filmed approximately... I've been having trouble finding good bites recently out here in Missouri. I've heard it's spawn for cats and they are bedding so less likely to bite, apparently after Father's Day they start biting better.

The bite gets super tough during spawn on these small rivers. It seems like maybe they’ve started, but I haven’t seen much evidence of spawning yet on the fish I’ve caught (swollen heads, darker colors, scars, etc). Video was filmed pretty recently. Just keep putting the time in. It will pay off.

How would this reel be for carp fishing? I am currently running a 5000 Daiwa black widow carp reel and a Daiwa black widow carp rod. I need a another setup but I would prefer something a bit bigger as I'm afraid if I hook into a 50 pound carp it may spool me. So I'm just looking for a bigger reel that's not extremely expensive.

I would personally prefer a spinning reel for carp. KastKing has several listed on their website for around the same price point as the Rover. I haven’t used any of their spinning reels, but would assume they are similar in quality.

I caught a 27 pound channel 15 years ago in a private lake I snuck into lol. Weighed it twice and both times came out to 27.3 and 27.1. So I just called it 27 pounds. I was 15 at the time and have only caught one cat bigger than that. That was a 31 pound flat head in a small river like this in Arkansas

This one is obviously nowhere near that big, but a nice cat for the water nonetheless. Thanks for watching!

Not really concerned with sheds. You can't eat them. Hides make sense for clothing...but I don't see any reason for trophies...

Whatever gets you outside and into nature. If sheds don’t do that for ya hopefully something else does. For me, it’s an enjoyable hobby and a great way to get outside when hunting seasons have closed and before the fishing really gets going.

I run 80lb mainline braid and lock the drag on my reel down tight for that exact reason. It allows me to horse in big fish like this before they hang up in brush and snags without breaking off.

I love fishing rivers. I have no boat so thats where my best fishing comes. Most folks will fish off bridges & that is good too but its popular. If u take the trek down the river a ways, you can find some great watering holes full of fish that no one goes to.

@fishstandard I have a question, I am relatively new to catfishing and have trouble finding spots. I live around mostly farmland and that's where the river runs. Is it okay for me to find an entrance to the river through a field if it doesn't have a "no trespassing" sign?
@fishstandard
@fishstandard 3 күн бұрын
Depends on the access laws in your state. In Kansas (where I am located) you must have landowner permission to enter private property whether the land is posted or not. Additionally, nearly every river and stream in Kansas is privately owned. We are required to obtain permission from landowners on both sides of the river/stream before floating/wading. The exceptions are the Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri rivers which are open to the public up to the high water mark on either side. However, landowner permission is still required to cross private property to access these rivers. The good news is it is not very difficult to obtain permission to access rivers/streams for fishing. You should be able to find out what the access laws are in your state by reviewing your fishing regulations and/or contacting your local conservation officer. Even if your local river is privately owned, I would encourage you to go knock some doors or make a few phone calls. Landowners are often willing to grant access to these types of waters, and some excellent fishing can be had on these smaller waterways.

@@fishstandard as much as it sucks, it's understandable. We have private property for reasons obviously. Better to just ask so you can keep going to the spots versus trying to dodge cops & landowners just to eventually get kicked out.

The Kastking 50 isn't bad, and neither is the 60 but on both the cast control doesn't measure up to the Abu. The 70 - 90 versions just don’t make it. If you are going to go that big you want a much sturdier reel seat, secondary mounting apparatus with an under rod clamp. The bigger reels have the same diameter levelwind that just won't take the pressure a fish worthy of this size reel will put on it, either loose the levelwind altogather or at least double the diameter of it and the spool spindle. The drag is inadequate on the 70 to 90 series as well. The 50 really is the best

What dors the trap DO? Grab their nose?
@fishstandard
@fishstandard 2 ай бұрын
The animal pulls on the lever inside the trap, which releases the spring and holds them by the foot until the trap is checked. Most states have a 24 hr trap check requirement.

Typically recreation and fur harvest. There has been an entire industry built around nuisance beaver trapping, but I am usually just harvesting opportunistically as I run my raccoon line.

Can you put 20 pound test on that 60 reel? What is the heaviest line that it will take? I cant make up my mind between the 50 or 60 for a catfish rod that i will be getting
@fishstandard
@fishstandard 2 ай бұрын
I have 80lb braid on mine. Haven’t had any problems. Not sure what the heaviest line is they say it will take. Thinking about stepping up to the 70 just for the tighter drag and added line capacity. The right size reel will depend on what size fish you typically catch and how much line capacity you need.
@billyray8904

Go with the 50...have 2 of them. 60 just a little to big for cats. I run 20lb mono and have about a 3rd of the spool left after about a 70 to 90 yard cast. Had them for 2 seasons and they're still smooth.
