There are some more practical reasons for hanging toilet paper correctly. If the tp hangs from the front, a slight tug down whilst holding the overhang will allow a reasonable amount to be unwound from the roll. However, if hung backwards, this manoeuvre causes the whole roll to unravel onto the floor right in front of the toilet. Gross! Secondly, the slight tug down can be coupled with a swipe that must be forwards, slightly up and slightly away from the roll all at the same time. This double manoeuvre results in a reasonable amount of toilet paper unravelled and torn off in a millisecond, one-handed. No fumbling, no tears, and no spreading germs. It is impossible to do this if the tp is placed incorrectly on the roll holder.

Wait just a minute. I was at a neighbor's house recently and they asked me to remove my shoes. A reason they gave was that, when a many goes to the bathroom, tiny amounts of urine may end up on the floor around the toilet, then be tracked through the house. Ok, fine. But it made me question, if I have been wearing a pair of socks all day, does that logic still apply? It seems to me that a pair of moist socks would be more likely to pick that up, or any other germs, and track them through the house.
