I used Raptor liner it worked great, most all products you use work as long as you prep it right. Prep work is usually the key for success.

Hard to tell without seeing it close up but it looks like they applied the por right onto the new pans without first stripping the pans back to metal. Generally the black coating on reproduction body panels and pans is not meant to be painted over with anything.

I'm restoring a 73 vert and have used that on about all the new metal. I've stripped all the new metal down to bare, used metal prep and the metal etch after that adhesion promoter then raptor liner. Time will tell I guess. Looks to me they por 15 right over primer, no good..

first car was a red 69 bug ($1200); second was a yellow 73 superbeetle ($1500- my fav); third was a gold 74 superbeetle with sunroof ($1400). owned them throughout college years. lots n lots of memories ☺

1st thing I do on a potential vw buy is to look at the pans,battery box, rockers, heating channels, front beam. All you need is small flashlight and 👀👁. Anything can be fixed but is it worth it?

Looks like a fun adventure! I haven't driven a bug yet, but I have a mildly lifted Miata that seems to do well on the trails. The Miata's wheelbase, body width and length are similiar to the old bug.

Watching you go down that first trail i was thinking "those guys need to have a small winch". Then when you came to the downed tree, i saw it, your winch. Lol

Hay buddy I did the same thing you did to marry the engine to the box and what I did was turn the engine using the flywheel teeth as the file to file the box and it worked well.😊

That doesn’t need any parts just sheet metal patches. If you replace the pan halves you could have used the one you already had.

Time to buy a welder and start practicing. I’ve done several body off restorations and I didn’t know a thing about welding. I think you are close to Rock Valley Junior College they have a good welding class. Other wise Adam at Seward Speed Shop is excellent.

Nice Project👍. I have a 1968 VW Beetle with IRS that I like to sell if anybody is interested. No rust on pan and body. Few body part are missing like glass windows . No seats. D-side door and engine. Trans is there. It is a Las Vegas beetle so the body and pan are excellent condition because of the climate here. If you use the pan of this Bug you don't have to do anything. just transfer the parts and you are done.

solved electrical issues using silicone spray on all wires and connections, including soaking distributor. stopped all my issues. I also added an extra fuel tank from a VW Pickup it fits behind back seat. Buss reduction gears made it easier to get stuck in worse places. I had my but in Hot VW's and pulled a restored 50's shasta trailer all over the country with a 2180 engine.

You're both courageous and crazy, but that's what it takes to have an awesome adventure. My first car was a 1967 bug ($75.00) that saw many local trails. It was a go anywhere car with studded snow tires and 3 buddies that could pick it up and move it to get out of trouble. Thanks for reliving some great memories. Your wife is a Saint.

The mechanic mentioned that it was a 1915cc engine. I've heard that anything over 1700cc is not that reliable because of overheating. The cylinders are thinner. I'm sorry to mention this but the mechanic mentioned that they did a lot of porting and polishing but @3:33 the intake ports are not polished. He also mentioned that they cut the head to lower the compression. Because air cold VW engine uses Jugs, cutting the heads bring the head closer to the case therefore increase the compression. I'm not a VW air cold expert but I am a retired ASE Automotive Tech and a own 1 VW air cold beach buggy and 1 off buggy. So far it seem your engine still running good even with the last adventure you guys took.
@b-lopez394Ай бұрын
Nice adventure. You guys could have push start it and drove it all the way home. After first gear, you can shift all three gears without using the clutch if you pay attention to your RPM and speed. You ought to put an IRS at the rear and raise it to gain ground clearance and also raise your front end. If you do that, you got more capable overlander. I did it on my 66 off road VW buggy. Thanks for sharing the adventure.
@celiaketley5496Ай бұрын
Learning as you go, which is great. I would advise not to lift the engine touching the pushrod tubes, as they are very easily crushed, and made to leak oil at the end seals.
