The rise of the Khmer Rouge could be attributed to the atrocious USA foreign policy and military campaigns that paved the way for the Khmer Rouge victory. Just like most contemporary geopolitical turmoils, most could be traced back to traced back to American/Anglo hegemonic aggression of the last 200 odd years.

17:38 The statues are not about the torture during the Khmer Rouge. It's a belief in what "hell" would be like. For example, if you cheat on your husband/wife, you will end up climbing that sharp thorn tree. If you steal someone's land, you will end up putting those lands on top of your head. If you slander, you will end up having your tongue pulled etc. You can see, a man sitting as the judge is the Hindu god called God Yama (God of Death and Justice), and the guy who's reading the book is his assistant. Now you may wonder why there are Hindu temples or statues in the Buddhist Temple? Well, it's a long story, but in short, during ancient times people practised Hinduism and then later on converted to Buddhism and some people still try to maintain what's left from our ancestors.
