I can't be the first to comment that the proper/effective way to operate a Q siren is to wind it up, let it coast and repeat. The different frequencies of the siren going up and down is what people can hear in their car with windows up and music cranking. It's not really that hard.

Sad. FDNY doesn't use this style Q siren. They use an electronic version. Blends in with the other sirens. You can't tell it's a fire truck coming.

It's called a "Wet Down" The firehouse is new and the other fire departments in the area do this as a way of "blessing" the firehouse. They do it with new firetrucks also.

You have a driver helping to flake line while the knob man starts stretching. Anybody that’s ever actually been to a fire knows if you’re first due to you just drop a line at the hydrant and drive off and delegate it to the second due or you worry about the attack line first then worry about connecting your supply line. You have a good 3 minutes of water to hookup and if you know what you’re doing it should only take you a minute and some change to hook a hydrant and get water cycling to the tank and lines

Wet Downs and Christenings of new fire apparatus and firehouses is a dying practice that needs to go on in the fire service as long as possible as a tradition to remind people how important the things that we have are whether it be just for tradition or superstition or luck whatever makes these proud men and women feel better about doing their jobs should be fully supported

Because it was for a new firehouse, so the firetrucks spray water on the firehouse as a sign of good luck. They also do it for new firetrucks, that's called a wetdown.
