Thank you for the this video, my amp’s tube chart had the circuit obscured as the ink had worn off. But I can clearly see my 1969 Bassman Export is an AC568, the rectangle 7w resistors are the dead giveaway!

21:10 on the bias electrolytic capacitor. positive goes to ground. negative goes to bias circuit. bias is a negative voltage. to work correctly, ground is a more positive voltage than the bias circuit. (positive lead goes through the board to be soldered to the chasis)

The ‘68 silverface drip-edge Bassman is easily the most toneful amp I’ve ever played. It has a sweet, JTM45-like overdrive as well. I use Sylvania str-387 6L6GC’s. Those tubes transform the amp.

@@SteverRob hahaha I always thought that too but it seems once my amps go past 3 or 4 they just get more full, not a volume increase, not to say they are not loud, I do like loud amps, but it amazes me how much thicker they sound than loud when turned up Just my thoughts lol

@@SteverRob I got a 100 watt bassman myself, it's pretty loud, more thick than loud tho, I have louder amps with less power, probably more efficient handling? Maybe it's just how each amp is Twins are loud tho, known for being a good loud amp for sure

Great video! Very informative. Helped me solve my problem. Can you provide a link where I may source one of those recap kits please? One or two of my 500V caps have spewed their guts. The amp still works though, but I've gotta get those caps and the 10K and 4.7K resistors that are out of spec around it replaced.

I do not understand what you did with the neutral wire and the heat shrink. You just soldered it to one of the transformer taps and didnt connect it to any of the switches or the fuse? That doesnt seen right. Please help lol I am driving into my drip edge bassman

My favorite is the pro reverb. It's technically a 65 bassman circuit but 40 watt, tube rectifier, reverb and trem. An amp expert said it was a AB 763. So I'm confused. It sure don't have tge scooped out mid range. I think it fatter sounding.

The 2 resistors on the 6.3v lines are a virtual center tap. The AB165 transformer has an actual center tap. Other than this I would argue the changes to the AC568 circuit are all improvements. This runs counter to popular opinion that BF's are better than SF's.

The AC power supply cords being used to update these old amps have the ground wired to the amp chassis. The outlet on these old Fender amps have a slot for polarized plugs. There are a lot of electrical things in a home that only have 2 prong plugs. Some things like tools are double insulated that do not require 3 prong. The outlet could be used to power a small computer fan to cool the inside of the amp or a recording device etc. Not everything has or needs a grounded plug. If you plug a 2 prong lamp into a 3 prong outlet the lamp isn’t grounded. What’s wrong with retaining the courtesy outlet?

I just recently bought a late 60s Bassman. It was advertised as a 67 bassman and the tube chart inside indicates the AB165 circuit. But when I checked the serial numbers and dates on the chassis and transformers and checked the actual circuitry it was clearly put together in early 1969. And it has the AC568 circuit in spite of what the tube chart says. I read on a site that this often happened; that they used up the old AB165 paper tube charts because the order of the tubes didn’t change even though the circuitry did. Anyway, I had the amp checked out by my favourite amp tech. He switched to a 3 wire ground power cord and replaced just one of the filer capacitors. I also asked him to use the disconnected ground switch to make a switch to turn the Negative Feedback loop off and on. WOW, when the feedback loop is switched off the amp growls almost like a Marshall. With it switched on the amp still sounds great and even better when I jumper cable the bass channel to the input of the normal channel. I’m hoping some day I will be able to compare the sound of my amp to Blackface Bassman with the AB165 circuit to see if there is really much different. I am very happy with the sound of this amp.

Thanks! going to attempt this on my 1963 bassman. It doesnt have a curtesy switch but it does have the ground switch. Im getting tired of getting shocked all the time and im pretty sure its mudding up my sound since modern day outlets have more voltage since 1963.

Hi great vid! I am trying to make this mod with my 1959 tweed bassman. It's completely original so all the wiring is stock. My amp is wired slightly different than yours. Our black and white wires go in opposite directions it seems but accomplish the same result. Firstly no courtesy outlet for me so the hot and neutral leads go straight to the ground switch. From there my black lead (I'm assuming its the hot lead, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I checked the layout so it should be right) goes straight to the fuse holder via a jumper through the fuse it goes to the power transformer (PT). My white cable (neutral I believe) goes from the other leg of the ground to the on/off switch. There's a jumper on the other end of the on/off going to the PT, I'm assuming that's coming from the black lead. I aim to bypass the ground switch entirely as you have done, the new hot lead going straight to the fuse holder, and white going straight to on/off and green to chassis. My death cap is wired from the ground switch to the chassis but If the ground switch has been removed from the equation, why is it still necessary to remove the death cap? Long text for short question. Thanks for your time! And removing that strain relief was a huge pain in the arse without the special tool!
