This place began as a vacation haven for the rich (horse-owning polo players), then became an engineering hub during the cold war. (Google "SRS nuclear") Racism is rampant and most people I know that still live there have never traveled outside "The South", much less outside US. Do not move here if you are a person of color, under the age of 65, or... if you don't think Trump is a diety.

Thanks for sharing. I have been to both of those places and I like Travelers Rest better. Downtown Greenville is a good place to visit. South Carolina is a good place to look at for retirement.

Are there nice condos downtown or new construction homes nearby (say within 5-10 minutes).

I call bs on reason #2. Ppl here are rude as hell. Don’t get me wrong I love sc I moved here from upstate ny so not the city areas. And people are much more polite back there than in sc. in my experience anyway. I’m talking common sense things like holding a door for someone or saying thank you. Or smiling and saying how are ya. Little things. Ppl here are some of the coldest iv ever been around. And the driving here is a topic you definitely should’ve brought up for sure. Other than that I agree with what your saying

Mark my words - this greed involving developers and realtors is shortsighted and asinine! And the powers that be pulling the strings at town hall should be ashamed of themselves for the harm they are perpetrating on their citizens and the forever destruction of many of these once unique and quaint communities. And when it all comes down like a house of cards (pun intended) it will crash with a thud! And who will pay the price - yes, who will be left holding the bag? Generations of locals - that's who!! Growth is fine but when houses are stacked together like cord-wood how can one not expect overpopulation and insane traffic just to name two of many negatives that will befall many. A minimum of 1-3 acres per house naturally controls growth in the short term and long run and gives people their space. If all those involved in fueling this feeding frenzy had enough brains and common sense to fill a thimble their heads would explode! The locals must be pulling their hair out over all this shortsightedness as the greedmiesters laugh all the way to the bank while the once very special quaint communities are molested for the almighty dollar!! Such a shame that common sense is no longer common at all. I have been researching a retirement move to South Carolina for my wife and I for years now. But the patterns are clear - the writing is on the wall. I will not subject us to the cost and stress of a move to this once very special state to have our life unravel due to the greedy incompetent management of the powers that be in this state. It also appears that Liberalism has landed here. And planting its deep roots in this state is evidenced in part by a huge focus on the arts. I'll be damned if I will put us through the costly motions of a move from one Liberal cesspool only to arrive at our new home to discover that the tentacles of Liberalism is alive and well in our new home state. I am not wasting any more valuable time on relocation research as of this moment. Come Jesus - Come!

You had our attention on your first video but this video describes yet another precious small town with its charm slipping away due to uncontrolled growth. Where has common sense gone in this country? Common sense is no longer common when $$$$ is in the mix. So sad how money takes precedence over the preservation of gems of which Aiken once was. Realtors and others are getting filthy rich at the expense of the forever demise of small town treasures. Yet another precious small town gem bites the dust. A sad day...

Well, the "cons" of living in South Carolina sound pretty good to me. My wife and I live in Pennsylvania (not by choice) and would love to purchase some land in South Carolina and live in a tiny house someday.

If we were to move we are currently leaning towards SC. Texas was a consideration but while not yet off the table that choice is waning.

What do you think mass immigration does to rents? Home prices? Wages? Crime? Taxes? Competition for goods and services? Inflation?

Comparing to Texas at this point. We live in Northeast and are tired of snow and cold and crazy Liberal politics and wacky mindset. But we have minimal creepy crawlers devastating natural disasters, we don't have to water our foundation to protect it from shifting soil as in Texas. It is maddening - just when we think we are honing in on a great place to retire with dignity someone throws in a con that eliminates our consideration. I took my basic training at Fort Jackson and I remember it being hot - yet pleasant too. We are in a quandary and getting this wrong could be devastating - making the wrong choice is not an option.

No... Been here 7yrs. People are stacked on top of each other. There are brown outs because so many ppl. So they add 500,000 more ppl. Roads are awful. People super nosey and gossip. Get all up in your business. Judgemental. Nasty attitudes. I cant afford to move out right now, trying to save and move west. Hypocrites. Be aware of those who claim Christian. You didn’t mention that hartwell being a corp of engineer lake. You don’t own all the way to the water. And that strip of land is public land. which means people hunt and camp on that property. That can be quite evasive at times for property owners.

Clemson is ranked #80 for national universities and #39 for top Public Universities...while USC is ranked # 121 for national universities and #61 for top Public Universities. Clemson University is superior to USC, Columbia.

If you are not semi or wealthy don't come to the Aiken area being poor here sucks there are opportunities but you have to have an education higher than highschool to get a decent job back in the day the cotton mills could offer something but you still lived in poverty. I am a life long resident and a senior now I had to work very hard and lived on a budget and have four children and it was not easy. I am slowly getting used to being retired still living on budget. So no don't come if you expect night life or anything more exciting than watching TV or watching some one putting on a roof.

SC income tax is 7%, plus they tax capital gains at the same rate. That’s bad for retirement. Tennessee is 0%. Alabama is 4% and exempts 100K of 401K/pension income plus no tax on capital gains. Food for thought.
