He's the greatest songwriter of his generation. I mean like Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, John Prine level, while also being an incredibly distinctive guitar player and singer. Those don't come along very often, with the standard being Merle Haggard: singer, songwriter, guitar player. I asked Merle Haggard one time which of those three talents did he find most personally rewarding.

It may be called "Decoration Day" but you weren't allowed to use a permanent marker on your future (and strangely .. past [twilight zone]) WIFES FACE! Then hide all the dressing room mirrors! God damn, I'm thinking a need to invent a time machine, to go back and fix this! .. Or ... Or see you on your latest tour. You were very good btw :) Best gig ever. I love your Les Pauls. Your lead guitarist changes guitar 165.2 times a gig, but he really wants a les paul. [PS for the slow of cheekiness, I was joking at the start :)].

It makes me catch my breath just about every time, the way Amanda Shires can find the core of madness in a song and make it just pour out of her fiddle. The 400 Unit are a very, very good band on nights that she's not on stage with them. She has a substantial solo career of her own, after all. But on nights she's there with her fiddle, her harmonies, and her energy, they become something even more, and are truly a great band.
