Quite a disparity in the pronunciation of Oceania. Hardly anyone, except the people at the end of the phone, pronounces the ia at the end.. Explain.

Ha! We are not sure we can explain, but we'll tell you what we know. When we first sailed on Oceania, we thought the same thing. All we know is that all of the cruise directors, captains, and any other crew on board all pronounce it "Oceana". Go figure. But thanks for watching. We are on the Insignia later this year, we'll ask the cruise director why and see what they say!

We loved your videos are are going to Antarctica 2/11/25. Question about the luggage restrictions on the chartered flights..what size are the overhead compartments? And did you have to keep your carryon with you when you went on the precruise excursion? Also, was the precruise excursion all on a bus? Thank you!! Keep on traveling!
@janandtraceytravels5 күн бұрын
You are going to have a great time! We think it was 20Kgs for a checked bag and 10Kgs for our carry-on. Now, both times we've flown on a chartered flight by Atlas (we have a recent Atlas trip we haven't had time to edit yet), our bags were not checked for weight. But that doesn't mean that they won't. The overhead bins were the standard size for getting a roller carry-on in. Perhaps not one of the huge "carry-ons" with the expanded zippers we've seen many people board an airplane with. As for the bus when you get to Ushuaia, think of that as an excursion. A bag that you might take for your typical excursion is all you need. We both had a roller-bag carry-on which we checked onto the truck that was going directly to the ship. We know many people like keeping their roller bag-type carry-on with them when they board, but on these cruises, it simply is not necessary. Atlas had one of the easiest embarkation protocols we've had on any cruise line. Plus, one of the benefits of doing the excursions once you get to Ushuaia, is that by the time you get to the ship, your cabin is completely ready and all of your luggage (carry-on included) will be in your room. As for the excursion itself, yes it is by bus. But you will get out at a few places in the national park. So while on bus, you will not always be on the bus. We felt comfortable enough to leave our small essentials bag on the bus when we got off. Now, we assume your excursion will be like ours, but it is possible that they have adjusted the excursion since we were on last February. Have a great time!

Why do you like cruising?
@janandtraceytravels12 күн бұрын
Great question. There are several things that contribute to our enjoyment of cruising: 1. Seeing new places. 2. Meeting new people. 3. Not feeling guilty about relaxing. 1. First, we love traveling. Cruising is just one of the multiple forms through which we get to do this. We consider cruising a "sampler plate of the world". You see a little of this and a little of that, all without having to pack and repack in a relatively short period (after our WC, anything less than 30 days is now considered short). We are mindful that in cruising you can "see" lots of places, but you don't really get to "experience" lots of places. This is why we like using cruising to scout out places that we would like to go back and spend a week or so and "experience". 2. Perhaps RVing is the only travel method that we've experienced which is as social as cruising. We love meeting people and cruising easily allows those of us who are interested in getting to know other people to do so easily. We have met so many really good friends who we still visit either in person or through our regular virtual cocktail hours. This is very difficult to do when traveling by hotels. It seems so natural to do on a cruise ship. 3. At home (which isn't very often now that we are retired), we tend to get very busy with this and that. It seems almost wrong to sit down for an hour and read a book, take a nap, or simply watch the day go by. Perhaps therapy would be a cheaper alternative, but cruising gives us license to power down and relax. The ocean going by seems so calm (usually, the Drake is a notable exception) that it offers a kind invitation to take time to simply enjoy just being. That's it--just being. Hopefully we satisfactorily answered your question. We would be interested in hearing why others enjoy cruising.

We have sailed on Splendor a few times and find your review spot on. Awesome ship but the last few times service was just a bit off as I think they are cutting costs and crew. We always get at least a penthouse suite and they seem to be spreading the butlers (and I am sure most of the staff) across more rooms, like all the NCL brands (Oceana and NCL) have done. The food and beverages seem of OK quality but not that great. Frankly their recent price increases have also made us look elsewhere and we have done SIlversea and are trying Explorer Journeys next month on Explorer 1. I would be interested in hearing your side-by-side comparisons of the luxury brands. (Silversea, Seabourn, Explora Journeys, Scenic, Ritz Carlton, and Regent). Of course when when the Four Seasons launches its new Yacht...I expect that will be more like a SUPER LUX experience well above what is in the market today...especially for the prices they will charge.
@janandtraceytravels14 күн бұрын
We had hoped Regent would have got their legs under them since our sailing. It’s unfortunate to read your experience. Unless we find a great deal, we are afraid that Regent has largely priced us out of their market. The good news we have found other lines that we absolutely love. You mentioned Explora Journeys. We were in the Explora 1 earlier this year and loved in. In January we will be on the Explora 2 and can not wait. We have also been in Atlas World Voyages and love the very small ship experience. We would like to begin doing comparisons, but for them to be truly objective we think they should be based on voyages that are similar in the time frame. The price of luxury lines tends to pose a challenge in doing several in the same time period to our budget. But some day. Thanks for watching and posting such a helpful comment.

@janandtraceytravels I did appreciate how you prefaced your review - honest and sensible. We are about to enjoy this video for the second time in 2 days. May I ask two picky questions, please? (1) What happens to your carry-on luggage on the bus in Ushuaia? Do they have a hold for it? (2)Does Atlas provide a waterproof backpack? I saw that in previous years they did.
@janandtraceytravels5 күн бұрын
We are sorry we didn’t see your questions. When you get to Ushuaia, you can put your carryon with the rest of your luggage that will be going to the ship. While your luggage goes to the ship, you’ll get on a bus for the excursion. There is no reason to bring your carryon with you on the excursion, not much room in the bus to put it anyway. Just bring whatever you would in any other excursion. We have received backpacks on two of our three cruises on Atlas. The first was a fabric one which we loved that we received on our UK cruise. We didn’t receive one on the Antarctica cruise. We assumed that since we received parkas they didn’t provide it. However, a couple months ago we went on a polar cruise with them and we received another backpack. While not water proof, it is a bit more water resistant. We are not sure why we didn’t get one in the second cruise. We did bring our own waterproof bag for the landings. We used it the first landing, but then realized it wasn’t necessary. Once again, sorry for the late reply. Hopefully this is in time to help you

Well, thank you. I sailed this ship when it was fairly new I guess around 2004 or so. I don't quite remember the exact year. And I remember it looking somewhat different. The thing is you call this ship "small" several times and it wasn't thought of at all as small at that time. Nor do I think of it as small now. True enough, it is smaller than most ships but I think most ships are huge, gigantic and gargantuan in size, so I feel this is a largish ship still. What do I think is small? The lux ships that carry a few hundred passengers or a thousand or a bit over and are in the 35,000 or so ton range, not 78,000 . As for the newer ships, I don't really like them better. I don't see a need to put so much activity in the atria (or plaza or foyer or whatever you want to call it). I much prefer that be done in lounges scattered throughout the ship). I sailed the Dawn with my family and my sister's teenage children and they didn't need the slides and other things. They just found other teenagers on the ship and made friends with them. Sorry to hear the food was bad. That's just one of those things. Any ship can have bad food or good food. The mass market lines seem to vary on the same ship with different sailings. Good to hear the musicians were good. I think the problem with cruising is theee are too many new ships and people keep wanting to go on the latest and "greatest" class. But I think theye're running out of ideas and the newer ships, like the Prima class, aren't that great. There are a lot of design errors in that ship class. And because they prioritize those ships, crews are being taken away from existing ships and the lines are spreading themselves thin. While the ship sounds well maintained the crew sounds overworked to give the service they're capable of.
@janandtraceytravelsАй бұрын
I'm guilty as charged! We should have called this a mid-size ship. We thought that compared to most of the newer ships, it was a smaller ship--which still does not make the NCL Sky a "small" ship. Thanks for watching and contributing in such a meaningful way!

What is the difference between stateroom & next level
@janandtraceytravels5 күн бұрын
We are so sorry we overlooked your post. The difference between our room (a deluxe window) and the balcony was an addition of a balcony. The rooms are pretty much the same from what we saw. Our oceanview room was about 165 square feet while a balcony is 216 square feet, but that includes the space for the balcony. So from what we could tell, the living area within the cabin was about the same. Above that, you have the concierge balconies which give you a few benefits such as earlier embarkation. Again, all of these rooms have the tiny bathroom. We had a concierge balcony on the Marina and we didn't think it was enough to do it again unless the price differential was negligible.

Been on four Atlas cruises and agree with this couple’s comments. Except that the food on our cruises was really good, as were our servers. Our downs were their poor choice of land expedition partners in the Mediterranean and the absolutely abysmal internet/wifi package on all cruises. Would we cruise with them again - absolutely.
@janandtraceytravelsАй бұрын
We literally disembarked the World Navigator yesterday from our 3rd cruise on the line. It was wonderful. Food was very good (although not perfect) and the Wi-Fi is still as disappointing as ever. I sailed the Marina in 2019, and upgraded to a Vista Suite on my Transatlantic Cruise…it can cost up to $24,000 each in this category with the suite not even the biggest on the ship…decorated by Dakota Jones it spoiled us for all future cruises, although I write this from Explora 2 heading to Miami from Barcelona, and this ship is amazingly better in every way except for the impressive cabin. I felt on the Marina that the Concierge was helpful, but as you say, not necessary or in attendance at times,,,further the Butler flat out refused to offer dining from the signature restaurants claiming the distance would result in cold food, as the suite was at the front of the ship and the kitchens at the back…I think this was an important benefit to be dismissed by a lazy Butler after paying potentially $48,000 for a cruise. Red Ginger was by far the best restaurant, and the cooking class by Julia Childs Head Chef, awesome! Loved Jacques as well…the buffet with seating outside very good too. The cruise was marred by Norovirus, and it caused all sorts of restrictions to be in place that affected our cruise, but especially the library being closed for most of the cruise…The lazy Butler said our suites books needed to be sanitized before being displayed, but that happened just a few days before the cruise ended. I did a video of the cabin, with its terrace that could accommodate over 100 guests for a cocktail party, two jacuzzis, two fully marble bathrooms, 4 tv.s, a Picasso(really!) in the living room, and a private gym in the room. But do not know how to upload it here.

You are going to have such a great time! We actually just got home from the World Navigator, where we were on the repositioning cruise from Montevideo to Ushuaia. In this video, right before the Polar Plunge, we listed the landing/Zodiac Cruise gear that we brought from home. Those are highly recommended. However, if you forget something, the ship's store will be more than thrilled to sell you what you need! An Atlantic cruise on Atlas is far more informal than most other cruises. We don't remember anyone getting dressed up for dinner--we certainly did not. The attitude is that we are all on this vessel on an adventure--the fussiness gets in the way. Bring a swimsuit. Even if you don't do the Polar Plunge (highly encouraged just for the experience), the ship has an incredible coed sauna with large windows facing the ocean, and the Traveler has one hot tub and a heated pool to relax in between sailings. What room type do you have? We had a B1 Veranda (room tour on our channel), and although our World Navigator B1 had shelves in the closet, our B1 Veranda on the World Traveler did not. This means there is a limited amount of space for folded clothes. Consider purchasing some magnetic hooks and a folding closet organizer. While the walls are not magnetic, the ceiling is. So we put two hooks on the ceiling and hung the closet organizer with shelves in some dead space. It'll sway horribly during the Drake Passage (if you nestle in a corner, it will sway less), but it buys back some additional storage space. When packing, think of where to pack your parka to take home! You'll see many people carrying their parkas onto the airplane as they had no room to pack it. We are so envious of you. On our cruise last week, we did a zodiac cruise of the Garibaldi Glacier, and our February experience rushed back over us. Have a fantastic time!
