In the 80s I owned several of Rich Hall's "Sniglet" books. I'm a fan. Even now that he's left us for Britain, I'm a fan. I think a lot of this would be better framed along class lines or instead along urban/rural divides. The US is not so divided between north and south or by religion as this portrays. Consider that hookworm is probably largely at fault for historical portrayals of southerners as slow-thinking. That was largely cured due to Rockefeller money. But no one in the south can admit that, can they? So instead, double down on not being stupid before medicine . . . Also, a lot of the claims about southern influence on culture didn't come from the south, but after the Great Migration, not because the immigrants had been southern, but because they were black and carried their cultures with them from Africa through the south into the north. Detroit, Chicago, New York . . . not south.
