Question about the tracing paper for the big kids- what ages use that and what does that look like each week? Our community doesn’t use the trivium maps, we use paper maps in shop ticket covers, but I’m considering moving to the trivium maps instead (first time director here). Thankyou!
@emilythehomeschooler4 ай бұрын
I actually give tracing paper to all ages and let the tutors decide whether to use it or not. I would say that ages 6+ can easily use it. Trivium tables or paper maps in shop tickets will work great for tracing. My tutors often use painters tape to tape the tracing paper to the map or table. Again, the older the student, the less necessary that is. I love the trivium tables because they are much easier to transport.

You cannot pay for a partial year, but you can certainly drop out if it isn't working for you. It would be best to stick it out for the entire year before making a determination but certainly you can do what you want.

I really like Fix it Grammar. We only do level ONE and it might take us two years to complete. I do it while doing Essentials, usually starting year 2. It's just added practice identifying what words are doing in a sentence AND its dictionary skills! Love it!

Do you think a family can start CC with a 4th and 6th grader? Both boys struggle with reading (6th grader more than 4th). Would they both start Essentials?
@emilythehomeschooler6 ай бұрын
For sure! Happens all the time. Yes they would both start Essentials. You can read TO your struggling reader and write for them as well (with them dictating to you). Reading ability does not have to hamper success in Essentials- you can help them as much as they need it!

Do you incorporate the spelling? I know mine will need spelling
@emilythehomeschooler6 ай бұрын
I do. The Essentials curriculum does include spelling, and some use it. It's not done in class at all so is just an optional part to use at home. I have used that, All About Spelling, and most recently, IEW's Phonetic Zoo spelling program.

Do you recommend the IEW TEACHING WRITING STRUCTURE AND STYLE ( DVD & PREMIUM CONTENT) for newbies to help comprehend this technique ?
@emilythehomeschooler7 ай бұрын
Most definitely. It is a key part of being successful with the program. Each community owns a set of those DVDs and holds group viewings so you don’t have to own your own set if you don’t want to. Contact your director or essentials tutors to learn more about that.

How do you organize your library ? Thank you in advance for your time. I have watched over 20 videos and yours is top on my list

1) yes, most people with students age 9-11 do both Foundations and Essentials at the same time. That’s the intention of how to do CC at those ages. I have had that scenario in my family for the last 5 years. It’s great! 2) you should follow me on Instagram @emilythehomeschooler. I would NEVER fail a kid for that. If you are still practicing, you can certainly correct her, but in an actual proof, no way. Push back on that if your proofer wants to fail her for something like that. Ultimately it will be up to the director but it just doesn't make sense if it doesn't alter the meaning.

Hi Emily, I am considering CC for next year (2nd grade). But I'm confused about what curriculum we need to add to it in our homeschool day. How much time would I spend on reviewing the CC material each day, vs. the other subjects, and what other subjects do most CC people have to get other curriculum for? When I first heard about it I thought the CC curriculum was all I would need for my entire homeschool curriculum, so now I'm confused, lol. Thanks for your help!
@EmilytheHomeschoolersReviews9 ай бұрын
you will find answers to this that run the gamut. The best thing to do is visit a local community and start asking people there what they do. The short answer is, for a 2nd grader, at home you're using a math curriculum of your own choice and a language arts curriculum of your choice. That in addition to the memory work they learn at CC IS enough! You will find many people who add a lot to that, or at a minimum struggle to believe that's "enough". But it is. CC builds into a full curriculum but not until 7th grade.

How do you deal with theft (accidental or otherwise) and misplaced/lost items? Over the last few years, I have noticed that especially on more chaotic days, things seem to just go missing and no one knows anything. There may be lots of helpers, but in the effort to tidy, things can go pear shaped. My head says, these things happen. But, it can end up feeling personal, when it is reoccuring frequently. Is there a "best practice" to help encourage honest behavior or to lessen the frequency of misplaced or lost items?

I honestly have no idea! It's all gone and it had been around for 5 years. My guess is it was a Walmart brand. However, I have stopped loading the top of those boxes- things would inevitably fall out. So this year I bought them additional pencil boxes to hold the things that used to be in the top.
