Great car. First 16:08 car I drove was an 84, nicely equipped, navy blue over pale blue cloth. A little tip, if you didn't already know, when cold starting, press the pedal all the way down and hold it a few seconds, then, without any gas it should instantly fire high idle, let run a minute, go without driving hard or sudden on the gas to keep the choke closed till it warms up Other than that, a great car . Its 96 hp. As long as there's no leaks, a flush will be fine.

Car that age you will need it switched over to the new a/c system, which is quite pricey. Upwards of 1,000. Change all the fluids. Add Lucas to new oil and add to gas the next time you fill up. Change spark plugs, rotor, cap and wires. Coolant will get changed when you change the radiator. Add new fluid, don’t resume. The K cars are simple rely transportation. I had a blue wagon and it did well. You paid cash for it and you’re not in debt with a car payment, that’s good enough reason to buy it. Do the maintenance to get it going again and it will last a good while.

84s were probably the best year to get! My Grandma Judi had a brown 84 she gave my parents in 1992 for a second car. We had it for only a year and my Dad basically used it for a work car. But despite it being a base model with no ac or radio or any power options it was reliable! They traded it in late summer in 1993 for a used 1990 Ford Aerostar van because we needed a vehicle with room being a family of 5. The other car we had at that time was a Chevy Celebrity and honestly I wished my parents wouldve kept the K Car and traded that Celebrity in on the van! The K Car was basic but it was in better condition than that Celebrity even though the Celebrity was 2 yrs newer than it. Oh well lol memories

Looks good and the cooling fan was a common failure when new. My folks had 2 of them both new at the time. The first was the infamous 1981 Aries yellow wagon the economy model. Then my folks had a 1984 Aries in garnet red woody wagon. Our 84 Aries was basically a Chrysler town & country equipped all power everything and even with the Precision Series Stereo which 1984 was the first year everything went completely to digital tuning on all Chrysler vehicles. Plus AM only radios were still a thing, unlike today! Yours is in very good shape and at least it’s never been hit! You just have age related issues. The venerable 2.2L is still good with its roughly 90hp. Fuel injection was still a few years away and also the 2.5L version of the 2.2L. I’m glad this isn’t a Mitsubishi 2.6L equipped model. They did their job well enough, it was car for the mass’s and not a garage princess, so they were used up pretty quick on the consumer market! My god they were everywhere and drove them into the ground!

Okay, I think I know why the factory cooling fan is not turning on and off. Believe it or not the ignition switch sends power to the temperature switch-sensor (thermistor) located on the metal frame of the cooling fan. If you have the repair manual schematics/wiring diagrams you should be able to check the ignition switch and wires going to the switch for voltage, continuity, and ohms/resistance. You can also check the thermistor-temperature switch-sensor for voltage and ohms. If the factory radiator is not clogged or leaking I would keep it. Do you have a local radiator shop nearby that can test it for leaks and pressure? So to wrap this up there is a possibility the ignition switch has failed that's why the cooling fan is not coming on. My 1985 Plymouth Horizon cooling fan stopped turning on, it ended up being the ignition switch as it controls sending electrical power to the fan when it reaches a certain temperature set by the factory. I hope this helps you and your Dad on the troubleshooting, good luck!!! It's in good shape!!! I would source out a good used Chrysler/Dodge AM/FM Cassette radio to replace the AM radio.

The fan motors themselves were very good at burning up when they were new. They went to an odd two bladed fan made of aluminum in 1984 which seemed rather inefficient and was the cause of a lot of those failures. I’d also just point out that this car was not wired for a stereo & it’s required speaker’s so altering its original condition wouldn’t be all that efficient if one wanted to retain a factory radio as it is. There is no harness to accommodate the extra audio channels when you just have a single speaker in the dash. Prior to the digital tuning radio’s they offer just an AM/FM mono only radio with the dash speaker. But I’m pretty sure in 1984 that the AM/FM mono option no longer existed as listening tastes were finally changing after decades of stagnation and FM stereo was finally just the norm! 😂😂 Cassette player equipped radios were still very much a luxury, but catching on pretty fast.

Rules to live by when building/working on cars. Rule #1. NEVER buy anything from Autozone, you just found out why with the fan that was the wrong fan...... Rule #2. Never go anywhere without a knife. Rule #3. "Universal" fits nothing. Rule #4. "Direct fit" and "Bolts right on" are both lies 99.99999999999999999999% of the time. Rule #5. Every 30 minute job is 1 broken bolt away from being a 3 day job. Rule #6. If it works it wasn't a stupid idea. Rule #7. Directions sometimes lie. Rule #8. Never take it to "The guy who can do it cheaper", he's cheaper for a reason. Cheap work aint good and good work aint cheap. Rule #9. Disconnect the battery before even touching anything. Rule #10. KZbin has instructions on damn near everything, use it.

Some of the best parts you will find for your car will be from junkyards. Most if not all brand new electrical and electronic parts have a high fail rate right out of the box. They may have chrysler or dodge logos on the box but the parts are made in Asian countries. The quality control just isn't there yet. Good used factory parts off of ebay are a good source for parts too. We are all just trying to help you not criticize you. @@Gabrielsgarage79

Good job young man! These cars were everywhere during my pre teen and teen years of the 80's and they got a bad rep IMO. They were good reliable cars, they weren't torque monsters or fancy smancy touring cars, they were no frills no excitement drivers. Here's what I would do IF it was my car, get it running good, clean up the engine bay and interior really good, Throw a cheap decent color change paint job on it, I'm thinking 2012 Dodge Ram Deep Auburn Red (Paint code PEP) and find some cool but cheap wheels like some Enkei 72's. the late70-to mid 80's Japanese built American badged cross over cars are becoming a semi popular budget build because you can pick them up running and driving for next to nothing.

Car was my Aunts and handed down to my cousin in 1994 or so was on the road until he sold it in 2001!! Every 99,999 they marked the mileage when it rolled over to 00,000!!

I had a 1994 Dodge Shadow new 2.2 5 speed and of course fuel injected that went 400k and rust just took it off the road in the early 2000’s. It didn’t owe me nothing and I got what I paid for it new at only 9 grand! Just maintaining it and yes there were repairs along the way, but being the only owner the interior wasn’t damaged and was just the undercarriage rust that took it out of regular service and it was just a put put around town car when this stuff started to be an issue with it, until it just couldn’t be fixed anymore. It finally threw its rod and crank bearings & the valve-train was toast and that was that it was done! I drove it to the junk yard, no joke!! It wasn’t that far away to do so! 😂😂 It was good car and I attribute its long road life to it not having air conditioning and all highway miles and it was a stripped base model! Only added a radio and that’s all it had!
