Yes, it is possible to take your car there, but you need to plan that ahead. The car need a permit to go there, which can be provided by the local tourist authorities. However, they have limited number of permits per day, so, you will get the permit if there are un-allocated vehicle passes for that day. So, better to plan ahead and take the pass well ahead to avoid disappointment. Hatchback/Sedan type cars will not be allowed - you will need an SUV with good ground clearance (~180mm+). Season/Snow/Your vehicle condition/License validity / age of driver can all be factors for the authorities to the deny the permit on safety grounds!

All cars need to be pre-registered specifically for visit to this restricted area. This is applicable for locally registered vehicles as well.

I have approached the local travel agent for help. they can help for a charge. (The normal process is to get the permission from the ministry - I am not familiar with this, but have read that somewhere in the net. try googling for that)

That last I heard, they don't allow private vehicles in restricted places. But lot of youtube videos showing pvt vehicles going up there.

I think private vehicles will be allowed with a prior permission taken from the home ministry. The state home ministry can also facilitate that at designated offices. This need to be planned in advance. Check on the net for further information
