Just found your Chanel, and I must say I really enjoyed your review. I loved Elemental too, and definitely I hope more people see it. To hopefully help clarify the plot for you, and others who may see this, as it is there, but not exactly up-front. The plot of the film, and core message was "learn to make connections" with your global community, local like-minded community, your family, and yourself. That's why they use the 4 Core Elements of Spirituality, Air: free-spirited, Earth: grounded, steady, stable, structured, Water: change, adaptability, wishy-washy, Fire: power, in terms of self-reliance, dedication, selflessness, fueled by a burning passion. The idea is that each individual has a core-element, which in this case were literally physical embodiments, but also spiritually contain all 4... thus the plot was to both literally and figuratively "fix" your leaky spiritual pipes. Wade, due to his upbringing under free-spirited parents, where he could pursue any career, succeed, fail, run away, and still be unconditionally loved and supported, was missing Earth and Fire. The best comparison would be buying your kid everything they ask for, as soon as they ask for it... no matter how positive the reaction, it ultimately leaves the kid feeling hollow and empty, because there is a certain amount of adversity required to have a truly genuine experience or connection... so, cue Ember. Her parents loved and supported her too, but they inadvertently cast a massive shadow over her, given they left everything behind, effectively outcast, built their home, opened a store, and literally founded Firetown. They were selfless, and Ember, wanting nothing more than to make her parents proud, as any kid would, imposed that massive burden on herself. As a result, she was missing Air and Water. Her journey to prove she was worthy of her parents legacy, nearly brought me to tears. Wade showed her how to connect with others... not just the other element-people, but the residents of Firetown, the customers in her family's store, her parents, and herself... he showed her how to live... how to enjoy life. In return, Ember gave Wade the genuine experience and connection he needed... despite her messiness... or rather, because of it. They filled the spiritual voids in eachothers lives... or, to put it another way, fixed their leaky pipes. I'm right there with you... I never would have expected a romance film out of Pixar... least of all one that nearly made me cry. To your points, it's by no means perfect... a solid 8/10... but my goodness is it the most wholesome and genuine film I have seen in a very long time. I hope that helps, take care, my friend!
