I disagree with the idea that there was a dilemma. 1st target was US carriers group, Midway was just a pretext / secondary target to attract them. Nagumo made what is today well known as "target fixation" on secondary target and wanted to 'finish the job' on Midway when, once Midway has been attacked once, be ready to attack carriers as soon as they were discovered, and put all his efforts at it while staying out of range from Midway. And no longer attack Midway after his first strike, whatever the result. It is not a dilemma, It's a major tactical mistake. Probably due to a biased perception of its own power, considering he could do two things at once when he obviously could not. Anyway, good for us and for the world.

The plan for Operation MI required the neutralization of Midway as a pre- requisite for the invasion so that any aircraft based there could not attack the invasion force (which had minimal air cover)- and this had to be accomplished prior to the arrival of any U.S. carriers. This is what created a dilemma for Nagumo. "One force, one objective" has been SOP of military operations throughout history. The original plan called for the 1CSF to apply this- first to Midway and then any U.S. carriers which were expected a few days later. Instead, U.S. carriers arrived early and presented Nagumo with two objectives for one force.

@@manilajohn0182 All Right, then the attack on MI was not only a bait but a primary objective. Very well. But then the result is the same: Once US carrier located, he should have fled, turning around Midway to keep approx the same distance with the Island. Continue its attack on it (should have taken little tiem as plavnes were ready and distance relatively short) while being out of range of carriers, and once the island neutralized, THEN he would have attacked the US Carriers. No Dilemma anyway.

@@madjic-uc8hf Neutralizing Midway was a secondary consideration compared to U.S. carriers. While opening the distance to Midway would have been sound for the 1CSF in any engagement, the requirement to neutralize Midway prior to the arrival of the invasion force remained- and this is what placed Nagumo in a dilemma. Worse still, Nagumo's carrier air groups were operating with a reduced aircraft compliment. As stated in the video, Nagumo barely had enough aircraft to accomplish 'one' objective. The discovery of the U.S. carriers placed him in the position of having to deal with two objectives simultaneously.

@@manilajohn0182 I understand. But that changes nothing. As long as one of the target has a higher priority than the other there is no dilemma. 1st target has to be completed first. There was a way to attack the carrier while being out of range of Midway and vice versa so no need to hunt 2 corks at the same time. Am I wrong ?
@manilajohn0182
@manilajohn0182 3 сағат бұрын
@@madjic-uc8hf It wasn't that simple. Although sinking the U.S. carriers 'was' the priority objective of the operation and taking Midway was a secondary objective, the plan required that Midway 'had' to be neutralized first- 'prior' to the arrival of the Japanese invasion force in range of Midway's aircraft 'and' before any U.S. carriers showed up. The reason for this was that the 1CSF lacked the aircraft to deal with U.S. carriers and Midway's aircraft simultaneously. This is what actually took place and what placed Nagumo in a dilemma. This was due to a flaw in the operational plan. No provision existed in the plan for the invasion force to turn around and mark time out of range of Midway because of the lack of ability to refuel all of the vessels- and Nagumo didn't have the time to get out of range of Midway (that would take a day) while trying to maintain contact with U.S. carriers which might not hang around. And moving at high speed to get out of range of Midway would place Nagumo's destroyers in need of refueling far sooner than anticipated. The short version is that the Japanese attempted far too much with far too little- and the Americans knew that the Japanese were coming.

Id argue that the Archerfish sinking of the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano was actuality the most deadly torpedo attack of ww2. 4 out of 6 hit and sank approx 76k tonnage Yamamoto class carrier. That's pretty insane. It may not have been ready, but that was a huge one submarine take down

You do amazing work man, this was best hour and half of KZbin in months. My grandpa (decreased about 7 years ago) was a marine in guadacanal and lost everyone in his DFP and lost half his ass to a grenade. Wish i could of talked about it more after i joined. My other grandpa was in navy and went to Japan after surrender. They stole a train apparently and should of been court martialed but commanders were angry at that point still and ignored it. He actually got to see nagasaki and said it was devastating to look at.

The Union practically gift-wrapped this victory for Jackson and the Confederates overall. That said, I would love to see a video on how each side scouted the movements of each other and how this was communicated in a timely manner to react properly. Telegraph was only relatively practical for the Union side and relying strictly on horseback would require added days/weeks to scouting, reporting, and reacting during a protracted campaign of almost constant movement. It often seems that Jackson's "brilliance" can be attributed as much on issues of coincidental timing, the Union underreacting/overreacting precisely as the Confederates had hoped, Jackson's keeping his eyes on the prize, and, of course, George McClellan perennial poor judgement and feet of clay.

I'm with you - I'm not going to second guess the high brass if they felt Fletcher wasn't the man they wanted, but I think that it's unfair to judge him so harshly. I think all of your arguments in that direction are good ones, and I agree. Also, don't forget that his ship put down three carriers at Midway. That is HUGE.
@KipIngram
@KipIngram 8 күн бұрын
Honestly, I think that sinking three enemy carriers at Midway is more or less enough all by itself to make the man's name. I do get it that the Marines were righteously upset with him at Watchtower, and I also really found that hard to swallow when I learned about it. Guadalcanal became a living hell for those boys, and maybe some of that could have been prevented if he'd gotten them all of their supplies. At the end of it all, though, I sure wasn't there, so I'm not going to second-guess the men who were.

Luck is such an important thing in life. How different things might have been had our carriers been at berth that day too. We'd likely still have eventually won, but it would have taken a lot longer.

It really looks to me like the fundamental screw-up the Japanese committed was when those Zeros left their position covering the carriers to go after the fighters that had just taken out their other Zeros. They should have held their spot over the carriers, and then that attack likely would have gone the way the others did. Because that was where the whole thing went south for the Japanese.

@manilajohn0182
@manilajohn0182 8 күн бұрын
They were too low to bail out. Contrary to what Hollywood portrays, the B- 26s were actually attempting a low- level torpedo attack on the 1CSF. It's debatable just who the crew was, but one of the candidate crews (piloted by Lt. J. P. Muri) survived and returned to Midway.

Although the battle was successful for I 19, I don’t see this is something that should be promoted as a successful doctrine when the Japanese failed to ever repeat this type of success, the type of success that the Americans had against the merchant supply lines of Japan in comparison is much more strategic victory, and an overall victoryany success the Japanese submarine fleet had

The cowardly use of Japan's Battle Ships shown most strongly here. 10 BB from WW1 including the four Kongo class and The two Yamato class BB. Send all of them here American's lose the entire campaign especially after this moment. And the Japanese BB forces should have been risked in these campaigns not thrown away later in the war. Note at Midway the loss in air battle rattled the Japanise overall commander too much. If he had the slightest clue of Carriers operations he would have realized there was no way for US to prevent the loss of Midway to the large Japanese Battleship force the one operational US carrier left could no more than maybe sink one BB or a few transports. Plus of course at Midway the Japanese Battleships should have led the attack and had the job to take out the airfield not the Carriers. The Japanese Carriers staying gaurd against any possible US Carriers and maybe providing some close air support to BB force which would try to show up off Midway near daybreak like they did in later battles. Japanese Carriers don't get caught changing out weapons like the Wasp here. Note after attack on Pearl Japan lost the war. The 44 US Armada would crush Japan even if Hawaii was lost there actually was nothing Japan could do to win the war only delay losing. Cleaver attack plan loses war similar to German invasion of Belgium to beat France in WWI lost them the war. Japan's goal for war was capturing resources under British Control in the area while holding the US off if they joined the war to help British. US expected to get tired of losses basically Vietnam and Afghanistan War win tactics for enemy. The US and British had imposed sanctions over the atrocities Japan committed in China. With strong Neutrality movement in US a Japanese attack on the British might not even get US into the War. Philippines held by US were a threat to supply of attack on British but nothing the vastly superior Japanese air forces could not deal with. So Japan attacks British and Roosevelt somehow gets US to go help them. The US public not that interested. Japan make certain they only defend vs US they probably right US loses some BB at Philippines and Aircraft carriers the British fighting in Europe have no desire to fight in Pacific having no US help in Europe. Treaty removing the sanctions on Japan established US leaves the war. British and Germans work out peace deal with British control of the Sea German settle for reverse of end of WWI deal their borderlands restored France freed under conditions simmilar to what it put on Germany after WWI. SOVIETS fall. WWI Britain not even at war with Germany till attack on Belgium Germany has to know they lose any war with British because of control of the Sea for WWI. Even if England joins war without attack on Belgium US might even join German side in WWI over British Blockade but in no way does US fight against Germany instead deal to release blockade thus preventing German unrestricted submarine warfare nothing to upset US over with civilian ships sunk. Best german suprise attack though Belgem could get is France out of war that not worth England in war. It was just a very cleaver plan that looked to good to pass up but lost the war just like Pearl Harbor great chance to sink US BB but piss off US so badly that US will not stop till Japan no more. Note Japan also too cleaver with trying to give US declaration of war before attack on Pearl but to late for Washington to war Pearl with any chance of Pearl doing anything about it. Even if Japan's Embasy gets message to US on time before the attack hits Rosovelt changes his speach just a tad to Japan declares us too late for US to do anything about it. Same result US pissed off to much to stop. Only if declaration of War Arrives a few days before giving US full time to prepare defenses at Pearl would attack there not piss off US that much and in this case BB and Carriers will not be there.
