This is the best, most thoughtful review I've seen. My biggest problem with the film is something that his family also found objectionable: he's presented as being converted from his pacifism to the idea that assassinating people is justified. There are even lines in the film in which he says as much. But Bonhoeffer thought that being involved in the plot to kill Hitler was something he needed to do, but also something he needed to be forgiven for. He didn't see it as a righteous act, however necessary it might have been. Bonhoeffer was all about the cross, suffering for the kingdom's sake, and being a conqueror precisely by being a victim, just like Jesus. People need to know about Bonhoeffer. And the best thing about this film is that it tells his story.

Thank you so much for the compliment and I must return it as well! 😄 I loved reading this comment! You so graciously and thoughtfully summed up one of the biggest contentions between people regarding this film. I'm satisfied in knowing that art is subjective so I can hear the film's message but be cautious about the version of Bonhoeffer they present. However, your final statement wins the day for me: "this film tells his story". My hope is that this film sparks a desire to find out more about Bonhoeffer, what he really believed, what motivated him, his family, his experiences, etc. There is so much to learn from history, it helps us build knowledge and in turn, wisdom for our present and future. Thanks so much for your comment, Robert! 😃

I got to see it yesterday, Friday. Regarding the color, if you didn't know before that it was WWII, the blue grey tone would tell you. It's the official pallette of WWII. As for him standing out, I felt it was the director making him stand out like a painter would make the focus of the painting glow. Also it seems to show he is in God's light and shining from that. Regarding the time jumps, if I didn't know the broad outline of his life, it could have been a little confusing, I agree. I also felt it was reminiscent of the main character of Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. He witnessed the firebombing of Dresden. At that point he became "unstuck in time" so his life was no longer linear. Past, present and future we're all jumbled. IDK if that's where the director was going but I wondered. I had never heard of Angel studios before, but from their preview for Homestead, another movie trailer and they also made Sound of Freedom, I was worried this would be another militant, white, Christian paranoia fantasy movie. I was glad to see it was very grounded in reality. It also focused on the danger of religion falling away from God and following a man or men. It was definitely against the concept of Christian Nationalism. I highly recommend the film to others. What I'm still trying to figure out is how to actively speak out for the voiceless. It also makes one wonder if one will have the courage when it's most needed. Remember, you can't be a martyr and live a long happy life. It takes courage to know what you're signing up for and do it anyway. I'm starting to ramble. A+ movie and review. Thanks for sharing your insights.

I saw a pre-screening of the movie just a couple weeks ago. Bonhoeffer in the movie really inspired me to trust God more and to more bravely face the challenges I have in my own life. I like that you lingered on the phrase "My country was invaded from within!" Such a powerful moment. I sometimes feel that way about my own country. I wish the release date was earlier so the message of the movie could get out to people even sooner. Thanks for your thoughtful reaction to the movie.

I love this movie too! But I have to disagree with you about the films ability to let you get to know Isaiah. This is a coming of age story where we see him straight out of high school not knowing what to do with the rest of his life. The character himself does not know who he is. And if I feel like if they gave him some extra interests to have in the film it would have messed up the messaging of the film and made the movie really slow. throughout the film I at least felt that seeing Isaiah learn all these wonderful life lessons and how to get closer to God was great development for him. And yes, maybe all we really know about him is he likes video games and playing Basketball. But that’s really the only things kids that age are into lots of the time. He was still trying to figure out this world and basketball and video games is all he ever really knew how to do as a kid. Not to sound all negative or that you’re wrong about anything. I’m glad you enjoyed the film! And this review is awesome! Just something that I thought of (:

Hi James! Thanks for your comment and your kindness too! I love hearing different perspectives so this is great! Art is subjective, after all! I have to agree, Isaiah is quite young so maybe there isn't too much to learn about him just yet. And it could drag the film if they added too much. But I think there's a way they could have built upon his character even just a bit more so we could get a fuller picture of who he is and fall in love. Even at 18, I think there's more info to paint a picture of who you are than just your favourite activities. Think about Captain America. It took us all of 2 minutes upon meeting Steve Rogers for us to know info that made us instantly like him. He's brave, selfless, resilient, patriotic, respectful and kind. The director communicated all this (kinda) covertly behind showing that Steve wanted to join the army. But we definitely see Isaiah grow in this film and learn a lot through his experiences too. I hope you get my point and that I was able to return the same graciousness in my words as you gave me. I don't think you're wrong either and I appreciate your perspective!

Definitely agree that discipleship is important. The Lord has given me four young women to disciple (one is in Israel) and we talk on the phone and study the Bible. We are in the very last days of the church age before the pre-Tribulation rapture. I have been born again 19+ years and for 7 years, I have been doing videos about the rapture. I was pulled out of churches because they are full of divorce AND remarriage adultery. Jesus is coming for a pure and spotless bride. Maranatha.

It's so hard for a film to convey the feeling of salvation. We may be too fearful of getting close to people who suffer. Mainline churches are reluctant to embrace the emotion associated with "Born Again". We process kids thru Sunday School but soft peddle the core demand of the Gospel. Please see the film, let your Presbyterian training go - cry your child center heart out - know the you're not alone in these core feelings.

I saw it three times & can't wait for it to come out on Netflix or whatever. Did you know that several of the family members make cameo appearances in the movie.. The real Rebecca St. James plays the flight attendant on the airplane, there was a glimpse of the real parents on the train ride and Luke played the lead singer in a rock band wearing a wig that looked like a lion's mane. I'm sure there were other I didn't see..

A very needed movie addressing a critical theme. It's difficult for hurting young men to deal with the "daddy ache" along with coming to terms with their own failings and managing the onset of adulthood. Great points addressed in your review; especially the one about Jesus being enough. Yes, He is enough for our salvation, BUT... Ephesians says Christ gave gifts to the church for a reason. Those gifts are the five-fold ministry which mature and edify us saints for the work of the ministry for the overall edification of the church. In other words, as you aptly cited, WE NEED EACH OTHER. I'm looking forward to seeing this movie as I also enjoy the Kendrick Bros. Nice job!

Joel and Luke often shared this story, but not so much Rebecca. Maybe because they were younger, or maybe because it was the start of her career, so she viewed it differently. Either way, it was amazing seeing it played out on screen, and you could feel the ups and downs the family went through in uprooting their entire lives to come to another country halfway around the world.
