Regrettably he missed the whole point of the redemption that takes place! When Tannhäuser reveals his heinous sin of living with Venus, everyone agrees he is beyond redemption! What he has done cannot be forgiven.! Wholehearted agreement, also from Tannhäuser himself. But not Elisabeth. She understands redemption through Jesus Christ when she says, "Daß auch für ihn einst der Erlöser litt!" And repeats herself: "Daß auch für ihn einst der Erlöser litt!" No sin is too grievous that it cannot be forgiven! So she is the only one who gets the Gospel message. Jesus died for the sins of the world! So when she points this out, what do they do? They send him off to receive forgiveness from a fellow human being, Who proves to be just as ignorant of the Gospel message. His response to Tannhäuser? "You see this staff in my hand? Just as it will never again sprout fresh, green leaves, so your sin with Venus will never be forgiven!!!!!! So Tannhäuser crawls back wanting to return to Venus until he dies (because as he told her before, he is mortal.) But just as she is about to grab him permanently, in rush some pilgrims with the Pope's staff -- full of fresh, green leaves!!! Tannhäuser is indeed redeemed, saved, and will join Elisabeth in Heaven with the Redeemer and Savior of the world, Jesus Christ, the Son of God! That's the Gospel: Jesus died for all, me, you, Idi Amin, Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin, etc., etc. For all! I'm not saying there is universal salvation. I don't claim to understand how it all works, just that salvation is for all!

i saw daniel barenboim conduct a full wagner cycle in berlin in april 2002 (dutchman, lohengrin, tannhäuser, meistersinger & full ring) and strangely he hummed along with it at times as he conducted. very strange, like a disembodied ghostly voice. we wondered what it was at first but we think it was maestro barenboim singing along. very odd.

excellent presentation but it was spoiled by the audience participation. i dreaded every contribution they were asked to make

Wonderful lecture, I learned so much! Especially loved the discussion of the change of keys in the Pilgrim's Chorus that begins at 47:00 and leads into the comparison keys with sharps and flats, and from there into the themes of the overture. I'll go back to this lecture whenever I have a chance to see Tannhäuser, which I'm seeing this year at the Met and hopefully soon at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

1. What is Lohengrin's only weakness? 2. What is the real reason Telramund went to kill Lohengrin in the third act? 3. For what reason did Lohengrin have to marry Elsa? 4. When was the duel between Lohengrin and Telramund? 5. If it is said that Lohengrin's victory in the fight is based on "God's judgment", then what is "God's judgment" based on? 6. Why does Ortrud think that Elsa will suffer her own consequences? 7. Lohengrin can refuse anyone's question, but why can't he refuse Elsa? 8. Where does Lohengrin's divine power come from? Where does the power to keep a secret come from? 9. Lohengrin accused Elsa of betrayal because of being bewitched, so what specific aspects of Elsa's bewitching are manifested? 10. What is the only reward that Lohengrin is willing to sacrifice for Elsa?

I’m always amused that brides, especially in America, want Lohengrin & Elsa’s march played at their weddings. I wonder what the reaction would be if they were told that the happy couple splits up within minutes of this joyful moment 🤣 Btw, you got the words mixed up at Elsa’s “In lichter waffen,” but 99.9% of people would never notice! 17:36

@jmballestra76072 жыл бұрын

it's a 15-16 hour long opera cycle; he had to abridge it to a one-session presentation so he had to cut various parts out. he also didnt mention act 2 of the valkyrie much - went straight from act 1 to act 3. he had to leave some stuff out to fit it into 90 minutes. it was still a genius presentation, à mon avis
