I never watched star wars but I remember experiencing the fandom and reylo in real time from the outside on tumblr so this video is still interesting. I like your channel and the videos you've done so far! I look forward to any more you make in the future!

In my mind Harry got really into potions as a way to cope with the death of Severus and it ignited a new passion. He studied them and became a potions master. But no we get Wizard cop.

While I'm definately in the "burner" category I must say you hit the nail on the head about the burners being "non-practicing". In my case it's a result of Rowling getting Universal to send Dueling Dragons to the scrapyard in 2017 and being a roller coaster fan (who has a damn near encyclopedic knowlege on the subject outside of the engineering as I'm no engineer, which I still know more than the average person about in terms of roller coasters) first and a Harry Potter fan second. As a result it was easy to burn it all in 2020 for me. I understand that's a very neiche position (Rowling attacking a fandom I care a lot about years before she went mask off transphobe, which hurts being trans but at least now I don't need to sound petty for hating her) so I 1000% support the "fuck it" croud that continues to write fanfic critical of her. And I'll add this: whoever came up with the theory that Rowling is Rita Skeeter is a genious, I want to see a full series among these fanfictions with that as the 1 rule to bind the universe. For me though, Bureau of Magical Things does it better (I've heard it compared to Fantastic Beasts, no it's what Fantastic Beasts SHOULD HAVE BEEN). As for wands at Universal, just go to Great Wolf Lodge and play MagiQuest. It's cheaper anyways and lets you be the main character of your magic story.

Just a quick correction about the end of the books - Harry is NOT revealed to be an Auror in the epilogue. (Just a dad!) That was JKR apocrypha until Cursed Child came out.

As far as Kylo's redemption goes, I strangely feel like Hux was originally meant to be the ultimate big bad in JJ's version of the Trilogy. Maybe it's because he was the one talking when all the planets blew up (spoilers, I guess) or maybe because he was the most obviously Nazi-Like of the bad guys but I definitely see a version where Kylo slowly realizes how he's been brainwashed, paralleling both the Storm Troopers and Darth Vader, the main he idolizes, while Hux leans into the power and control he's gained as a member of the Space Nazis. Not sure how Snoke plays into all of this, he'd probably still be killed off but by Hux this time. Sorry for the rant, great video, Poe and Finn deserve each other

Wow!! I spend a lot of time on YT watching queer video essayists-I was an avid Lindsay Ellis fan and these days I watch a lot of Contrapoints, Verilibitchie, Alexander Avila, and Rowan Ellis. All this to say, I consume a lot of this content, and I am SO impressed that this is your first video! Your ideas are so clear and easy to follow, and this is such a fascinating and well-researched topic! I was genuinely sad to click into your channel and find it almost empty! I've liked and subscribed, I hope you keep them coming!

I'm going to beg to differ. Nothing interesting happened in The Last Jedi, and you could cut the movie out of the trilogy and almost nothing would be lost. But then you can cut out the entire sequel trilogy, and nothing of value would be lost.

i still like drarry. it’s fertile enemies-to-lovers soil, especially if you come at it canon divergence style. im also a multishipper though so the concept and quality of the fic is more important to me than the specific pairing

I think a lot of fandoms go through changes, especially when they fall out of mainstream popularity.. Harry Potter is still really popular but it's not as popular as it wise. When the movies came out, with a new TV show coming out it might regain popularity and everybody might be talking about it... It... I've been in a lot of fandoms since I was in high school.. something that's never really gaining attraction, there's some rare pairings out there and rare fandoms.. but I kind of feel like it's normal for pairings and fandoms to dwindle a little bit.

the thing about children in romance novels that make you wonder if the author has ever met a child is so true...... but it is a pitfall I have fallen into before and I really can't blame authors for doing it because it is very fun. But it kind of flattens the genre when every single child character is precocious and witty and picks up on everything the MCs are too dense to notice.

Goddddd the "people who menstrate" tweet still gets me so heated. Like, yes Joanne, we exist. Not everyone cursed to bleed once a month identifies as a woman. She sounds so ignorant in said tweet, and it really was a "oh so you suck as a person" full mask off moment.

I'm in this video....and I like it. Great work. Seriously. The height of this fandom was so intense and fun and weird. Fanfiction unexpectedly changed my life and introduced me to some of my greatest friends. You're right in that fanfic writers generally aren't on panels and at book signings, but the actual act of *writing* fanfic is so much more fun and fulfilling than writing novels. Personally, I absolutely love the serial posting, the comments, the collaborations. I really miss it.

I disagree with your argument at the end I think. Do you think 10 year old queer kids are still obsessed with harry potter? Do you think they should be? Theyre watching the owl house and skibidi toilet, probably. There is nothing special about specifically harry potter fandom to be preserved, other than its size and thus the amount of people with nostalgia for it. I too, had my first experience with slash be wrt specifically Harry Potter, but Harry Potter itself was not the important part - you were! The community existing was the important part, not the specific media it was centered on! People do the same kind of identity formation with regard to other media, and I simply do not understand why you would want to stay attached to harry potter, or be sad that kids are finding things to fixate on other than what /you/ were fixated on.
@frejo1931Ай бұрын
I dont think the "fuck it" type fans are majorly harmful, but i do not think they are contributing anything societally that is any different from the rest of fandom. Your woke fanfiction just reads like compensating.
@frejo1931Ай бұрын
I do want to point out that your methodology has a clear issue, which is that using the number of total fics in the tag through the wayback machine would include older fic imported over from other archives, which on AO3, and specifically regarding harry potter, happens regularly. The last specifically harry potter archive import was last january, and the last archive import overall was only 10 days ago, ignoring individuals deciding to import their fics on their own. My methodology would be to use the "updated from [date] to [date]" feature, to only get *new* fics, ignoring old imports. For example, your graph indicates that about 7500 new drarry fics were posted in 2017, which might be true, but only 4171 of those seem to be *written* in 2017. Other years, such as 2015 (about 2600 vs about 2500) are much closer in number. Granted, this decrease could also be people deleting older fics (possibly because of JKR), but i dont know why 2015 drarry fans would be that much less likely to delete their fics than 2017 drarry fans.
