The timing of listening to you guys was epic. Appreciate the awesomeness of this whole concept. I was out on an endurance training session on the bike and was listening to this today. Came across another cyclist and it began to rain. I just heard you guys say “it’s the engagements” that we remember. She invited me for a coffee whilst the rain passed. I said yes. Now we are friends ❤

good on you for teaching someone how to pronounce it properly (im a Labradorian but what odds lol). Fish & Brews is also amazing, childhood staple. my dad added onion to the rendered pork fat. The secret to the hard tack is not to over hydrate it, you want them stiff but soft like a boiled potato (it's a substitute, pretty much). Also YES Scrunchions are newfie chicharrons. Cant have dressing unless its Mt Scio savoury!!! Snowballs are great, but here in NL it's just as easy to buy Tunnock's Snowballs in most gas stations etc (same as their coconut bars). The other part of the province, btw, is where Birdseye discovered the freezing process for your modern frozen foods (but this was before 1949, so it wasn't a 'canadian' invention, and it was from a process learned from Inuit in the area, Clarence Birdseye lived for over 30 years in Labrador). Also in the area of pickling, my family would pickle red beets, as well as a pickle mix with onion, cauliflower and tomatoes with a sweetened mustard (wasnt really spicy, this was the time before Newfs and Labradorians discovered hardware store hot sauces and Takis).

Thank you for the comment. I appreciate you watching the show and taking the time to comment. Have you seen the show The Foods That Made America on the History channel? It has a great episode of Clarence Birdseye and how the business came to be. Fascinating information.

@@runtrimag i will have to look it up. Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern also did a great episode on NL food, mainly in the St Johns area, plus Bourdain did an episode here not long before he passed.

@@runtrimag anytime!! the Zimmern one is more of the traditional foods and he did some cod jigging, whereas Bourdain's dealt with some more heightened foods on the land here in Newfoundland. IM actually Labrador Inuit (Nunatsiavut) and we have some things like smoked arctic char that the sushi community LOVE. If you never had any before, think of Arctic Char as like Atlantic Salmon but BETTER!!!

Second comment: I recently joined an endurance running community with a pay wall model for their coaching related information. I payed up $100/year to try and develop resources to support my fitness and endurance goals. I sampled a few others before deciding which to join. What my initial experience has been is that many of these up start communities of the last 5 years are all learning the “culture” part of endurance sports. My group has a problem many other sports have had in the past which is that many of the people they hold up as role models are not very good people outside of the sport. Many have views that drive them into endurance sports because they believe it is exclusively for people like them. Sharing the trails with people who don’t look like them, come from the same communities as them, or hearing from people within the group who come at their knowledge of these sports from other disciplines, is not very easy to accept for many in the dominant groups. In the next decade America will see an influx of African athletes coming to endurance sports. As more African youth come into the NCAA distance running, cross country, and swimming programs, remain in the United States to live and raise families, you will see endurance sports see a larger black presence and a dominating one. The number of young East Africans I’m trailing with in the hills here is SW Washington between Seattle and Portland is fairly impressive. These athletes will continue beyond the marathon and that will put them right in the heart of our endurance events. It’s important that we create communities and teams that welcome and appreciate every athletes journey and contribution. Endurance is our human super power. It’s important for our mental health and physical longevity. It’s a human thing right. So let’s be inclusive before it becomes us vs. you guys. That may sound like fun, but it should be teams, not racial or gender groups.

Thank you Jason for clarifying and emphasizing the issue of “imposter Syndrome”. It’s very real and has massive health and lifestyle implications to the negative side. Our society is full of unicorns and model minorities of some kind. The presence of an average archetype that pulls in everyone possible in an organic way has to be created and promoted because most of us are not that exception. Endurance sports is the worst when it comes to being set up to amplify imposter syndrome. If we don’t see it, we are part of that culture, and it’s important to talk about.
@runtrimag10 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Imposter Syndrome is something I deal with on a consistent basis and there are times where the stress and anxiety from it are difficult to deal with and I need to step away. Getting away in those moments is critical for me because I can self-reflect and see where we started, where we are and what we are doing to continue to move forward. That is in business and in my performance in endurance sports. - Jason
