These characters are decades and decades old, yet everyone knows who they are, so they are clearly culturally relevant. Universal’s reboot franchise flopped, but these horror characters are the fairytale equivalent of Snow White, the little mermaid, etc that so many fantasy lands are built around. Forever famous, and people are always interested in new takes on established characters like these.

The simple fact that Dark Universe will have a crazy immersive ambiance, more likely the best area to walk in at night tells me that it's gonna be a success. They just need to serve those monsters not looking like they were back in time but how they would be if those movies had been made now. Because how they were looks like out of our time because of the possibility they had at this time. They look like outdated monsters, because of the look not because of the monster itself. But I'm sure it was the plan.

While the actors that were picked for dark universe are all good actors, I think they were the wrong pick. Needed people that no one has heard of. I couldn’t take the movie serious enough with these actors. I was waiting for Russel crow to go into an arena and Tom cruise playing the mission impossible music. I want to see new faces. Plus these characters are suppose to be evil. I didn’t feel that sense of fright watching the mummy. Lame story.

I think you're missing the enormity of these hundred year old franchises. It's not like vampires and lycans are not all over streaming and several updated movies.

Nice to see that Universal is using The Dark Universe name from their failed universe and you know Universal should've stayed The Course with Dracula Untold as THE 1st Film for The Franchise. Now according to Luke Evans, Universal has been wanting to put their monsters together in films since the late 1970s to early 1980s and he doesn't see them giving up that quick.

💯 Bang on. I would go on to add that the upcoming Nosferatu film is a safe way for Universal to test out the waters without potentially tainting its DU brand. So far, Nosferatu hasn’t really been mentioned in any Epic Universe marketing (at least that I’ve seen). So if Nosferatu flops, no harm done (unlike with The Mummy). It’s also a slightly more obscure remake that isn’t original to Universal, so they have even more insulation. But if Nosferatu does become a suprise hit (or at least gain a cult following), you can see how easily it’ll transfer over to the park.

The Dark Universe was announced in 2017 while Epic Universe was in the planning stages. They were more than likely conceived hand in hand with the expectation that the movies would draw people to the park. The movies failed so they pivoted into a less expensive more generalized version of the original plan.

It's still a smart move. They did a test run for these monsters at a recent HHN and must have been pleasantly surprised at the reaction interest.

It feels like the money that would have gone to paying Tom Cruise and the other big names was instead reinvested in hiring full-time HHN actors for a more immersive experience. So, in a way, the movies flopping actually worked out in our favor.

This yeah. The park section was a tie-in that got altered when the movies fell apart, not some long grandmaster chess play for movies in the future. I'll frankly be shocked (ha) if they start up the dark universe movies again.

I'm sorry I hate the argument on the having to pick something new compared to og universal monsters. Those original monster are the foundation of horror and are still prevalent even till today even if they have had a resurgence in different styles they will always be there. With using a modern ip there's a bigger chance of it falling off or being to niche. But everyone knows these monsters for ever and always

I agree with you, Universal made the right choice to pick the classics over something current. I brought up that whole argument because hollywood studios (i.e. Disney) tend to favor what's popular right now over "legacy" IP, but glad to see Universal bucked that trend

Every aging geek who has ever commented on Epic Universe picks the Dark Universe section as the part they're the most excited about. (It certainly is for me.) To the point that I wonder if it's possible to not disappoint them. After all, the last time Universal tried to make "Dark Universe" a thing, starting with the Mummy reboot, it was a miserable flop.

That all would’ve worked before if they wouldn’t put Tom Cruise in anything. I see where you’re coming from and as a parent I have this to add my daughter has never seen any of the classic monster movies, but she knows who all of those characters are thanks to Hotel Transylvania. She is one of those darker gothic kids not all kids are like that but she can’t wait to go to this piece of the park. She wants nothing to do with Disneyland. She has no interest in princesses and that’s OK. I’m just glad there’s a park for her now.

I agree with you because Tom Cruise was THE Problem, and I am not surprised by that because he even wrecked Stanley Kubrick's last film Eyes Wide Shut with his ego as well according to R. Lee Ermey in an interview from 2006.

I hope the Disney folks are watching this. Dark Universe is that alternative to the various Disney PG offerings. Now Disney wants to tone down the Haunted Mansion, because Disney wants to even push HM more into a PG offering? PG is fine, but that’s not the only market out there. Disney, as Universal does, has to trust their guests to understand the fantasy, from the real.

The only way to bring the Dark Universe back to Hollywood would be if Guillmo Deltoro and Sam Raimi were both put in charge of the entire franchise. Both of them know how to make Action and Horror movies, and understand movie making in general.

The video production was quite well done. The content kinda missed the mark, you might look into the history and lore and rumors a bit more, should help you stay on target. The Classic Monsters have saved Universal so many times over the years. They have been killing it with the HHN houses with the Classic Monsters over the past several years. They made a mistake with the recent mummy movie, they forgot the essence of the Classic Monster movies they made. I think if they go back to that and embrace the classic aspects they could make more movies. But the love of the classic monsters never left. So having Dark Universe makes TOTAL sense in EU, honestly it might be their strongest sustaining land (only tied with Nintendo) because both have such a history and lore to expand upon. But do your research and get that history, facts and possible rumors in there and vids like this can go far.

I think you’re wrong about the relevance of Frankenstein and other classic monsters, there is a huge cult following of these old horror movies. People have been craving a ‘villains’ or spooky side of theme parks for a while. Look how popular Halloween horror nights is, they are capitalizing on the monsters that have a following and they already own them.
