For the question of rationalizing, I believe that root 12 (that is root 6 + root 6 as given) can never be 2 root 6. I think root 12 is equal to root 4x3 which is equal to 2 root 3.

root 6 + root 6 = 2 root 6 and not root 12 (and this is according to the law of surd)
