For newer rcas just scan the packages and write down the sequence number this way you don’t need to think about the address you know what number comes next.. case your sprs with your hot case stuff… don’t case your dps but stagger the mail while pulling down this was you have your sprs in with your dps so on the road you are just grabbing and going and you don’t have to think about the smaller packages that fit in mailboxes.. everything else just comes in time without you even noticing.. it really seems like a lot of people don’t have super long routes I’m in upstate nyc and the routes can be extremely long due to the boxes being so far apart.. if you are new do not worry about how long it takes you to get back , it takes time.. mondays are usually insane for us and let me tell you nobody is casing 8 or 9 trays of dps lmfao

Just started as a rural carrier in Menomonee Falls a few weeks ago, enjoying it so far! Gotta keep an eye out for regular positions cause nobody is retiring in my office anytime soon. But with all the construction there might be a third route opening up!
@davidkelln92252 күн бұрын
Congratulations on the new job! My advice to you is to focus on learning the routes in your office. Once you have "mastered" a couple routes, you can loan yourself out to other offices. Seeing how things are done in other offices can help make you more efficient. Also, it gives you the inside track on vacancies in those other offices. I have been an RCA now for 6 years. In that time I've had 3 opportunities to become a regular carrier in other offices (Port, Grafton, and West Bend) but chose to keep my Teaching position and just carry one day a week. So don't be afraid to pick up a few routes at other offices. If you don't enjoy your time helping them out, you don't need to go back. If you do like working there, you can- and it might get you into a regular position sooner.

I dont case my Sprs anymore it takes to long . I just scan and tub them in sections its become much more efficient .
@davidkelln92254 күн бұрын
@@chillyE30 gotta do what works for you. Fastest way will always be to put them in order by memory (if you know the route really well). I began casing them because it allowed me to take my DPS on the side in my POV. Now I always case them- became habit. My experience has been that organizing them via casing is pretty quick, but it does add time when pulling down. I like working out of waffle trays, so another bonus is that mixing in the SPRS makes them lighter (even though I need more of them). Also, I strap a bungee cord across the top to prevent the packages from popping out during delivery. All that said, every route, every case, and every carrier is a little different so you do what works for you. Thanks for watching!

@davidkelln922515 күн бұрын
@@popclutch_100 so, you should get to ride along on your first route before you deliver it. That said, when I deliver a route for the first time, I use my smart phone to direct me to the first box. From there, I just follow the mail. If the street changes on the next piece of mail, I look to turn. If I have trouble finding the next box, I pull out my smart phone again. Now, they will likely be willing to give you printed turn by turn directions, but I personally find them tedious.

Can you be honest because all I’m hearing is negative things about driving for USPS. Is it a good job/opportunity for someone young who doesn’t want to to go to college now and is not sure if they will. I don’t have the privilege like most young adults to go to school, so I have to work and I’m also a young father. I’m in the hiring process already. I love driving and being outdoors so I applied
@davidkelln922529 күн бұрын
@@sohailsohail9655 truth is it depends. For some people it's great, for others it can be terrible. I've made a few videos about the positive s and negatives, but briefly, it really depends on the office and where you live. $20 an hour isn't bad where I live, but it won't cut it in Boulder, CO. And it really depends on your office. My office is great and I really trust my postmaster to go to bat for me. That isn't true everywhere. Since you are a dad, insurance is probably pretty important, so if you are thinking about the post office, you probably should look into becoming a clerk or a city carrier. Their route to full time is much quicker. Let me know if you have specific questions and maybe check out some of my other videos.

So I just started as an RCA... The economy is forcing me back into the workforce... Apparently, a few things have changed since your video... RCA's now get SOME leave time. Half the rate of RC Regulars and PTF's.. So that's something at least.. And if you work the same route for 30 days you get the full compliment of leave until you leave the route. Also, the Union is currently fighting to eliminate the RCA position altogether and make all RCA's PTF's.. Although I don't really see that happening... Plus... UPS just gave all their drivers a MASSIVE raise of like $10 an hour, so even part-timers are making $22+... The RCA Union is trying to use that as leverage to get RCA's a nice raise. Because you can Imagine what would happen if every RCA just up and quit to go to UPS... Especially since there are no benefits to being an RCA other than a paycheck...

I take my dps to the street too. I don’t case my spurs. I just put them in sequence in their own tubs. On the LLV tray I have my flats closest to the windshield, dps tray in the middle, and spurs closest to the back of the tray. I replace the trays with the next when I empty them. In my pov, I have dps in the left seat, flats in the floorboard banded in small bundles so I can pull up one and put it on the middle console, and my spurs are in tubs behind the left seat and the active tray is in the space behind my console so I can just reach down and grab the next one. I’m curious about people’s setups though because my minivan won’t last forever and I really want a Jeep wrangler or Cherokee next.

Sometimes its easy to get overwhelmed while trying to remember 3-4 things at once, or what mail or package is coming up next. You have to learn how to shut that down, and get passed that. The best thing to make yourself faster on the route (which is frowned upon) is getting the mail ready before you get to the box. You can't always get it all, but that will make you 10x faster. Limit your time at each box
@davidkelln92253 ай бұрын
That's true. Everyone is a little different. Some carriers can load 100 parcels in their truck, look at them just that one time and deliver them without issue. That's certainly not me. I like taking my DPS to the street, and I don't mind having one or two box holders on the side as well. I usually can work out a good system and flow with it. (More than 2 would be a challenge though). Other people would rather have everything cased and marked so they can fly on the route. Absolutely do what is in your comfort zone. Getting flustered leads to mistakes, and then your route is endless.

@davidkelln92253 ай бұрын
It depends. I don't want to jam things up for Monday, so I avoid it if the package is too big or the mailbox is too small. That said, if the weather is bad, I may stuff it in there anyway if there isn't a good place to leave it. I once left a small box by a front door and it blew away- the customer never found it. In short, be good to Monday carrier, but putting the package in a secure location is paramount. Sometimes that means jamming it in the mailbox.
