Thanks Rob, I'll test that next big cut I do. Mine is the same H&F but with the swivel base. Hard working and about 18 years old....have you ever changed the gear box oil? I've never even opened it up - Cheers Jim
@Xynudu
@Xynudu Күн бұрын
Hi Jim. Mine had done a lot of work (business owned) before I bought it second hand in poor condition. I checked the oil initially and it was a bit discoloured but basically OK. The gear speed is quite slow and the oil should last a very long time. The bronze gears looked good as new. Minimal backlash. A few years later I changed the oil as a matter of course. I replaced it with car differential oil (about SAE 90) I had left over from a job. The cover seal was OK and doesn't leak. It's about a 1970's model Rong Fu from Taiwan. I had to replace the blade idler wheel bushes and sleeve the worn shaft when I restored it to serviceable condition. I made that a bit heavier and more wear resistant while at it. I also put a 1 HP motor on it. Good unit that does a lot of work. Cheers Rob

I have a similar saw 7 x 12 from MSC Industrial.. The one that 3 or 4 brands use the same casting and put there name on. It uses a 93" x 0.035 x 3/4 wide blade. I put new bearings on it and still couldn't get it to make a straight cut like it did when new..... I tried all the techniques with tilting the bearing assemblies and tensioning the hell out of it. The cut was square in the vise, but running out from top of the cut to the bottom.. I didn't think it would fit, but I got smart and decided to try the same length blade, but 1" wide.. It works like a charm keeping the blade from drifting in the vertical travel. It's stiff as hell installing it, but it fits. The cuts are now perfectly square in all directions. I use coolant, but the wider blade also absorbs more heat. I found this one on Am*z0n with excellent reviews. Imachinist S931812 M42 93" X 1" X .035" x 8/12 TPI . It rips through alum and steel like it wasn't even there. I also sourced out some spacers to spread the guide bearing out on the 1" blade for a better spread from McMaster Carr , 92510A491, Aluminum Unthreaded Spacer 3/4" OD, 1/4" Long, for 3/8" Screw Size. I haven't installed them yet as it works well as is. I hope this helps someone going through the same frustration I went through.. 👍✌

my blade always ends up about 2mm away from the cut its made... but the cut is still dead square... dont bother worrying about what the blade does, put a square on the actual workpiece and CHECK. spent far too long chasing my tail to care if the blade drags or not. all that matters is that the cut is square as verified with a square... makes no sense as to why it does it, or how... anyway, i prefer it like this as it means the offcuts tend to get flicked away rather than jam up.

That's a very strange situation to have. Sounds like the arm pivot is not parallel to the cutting table. Checking the result with a square is a good follow up.

Is that a bicycle peg repurposed as a handle for your quick change tool post ? My dad made me a set that looks similar when I was younger. I remember I was so embarrassed when I pulled up on my bike only to learn they were wildly popular as they were unique compared to the “cool store bought ones” I thought dad was just being a little cheap, turns out he was quite handy with a metal lathe and could whip up some pretty amazing stuff. So amazing that someone wanted them so bad they stole my bicycle, took off the “pegs” and left the bike at the school playground.. it was a few years later I started seeing ones just like it for sale at the bike shops. They looked identical to the one on your tool post. 😊 … Hang on a second….. Where did you get that Peg from buddy ? 🧐 🤷‍♂️😂
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 2 күн бұрын
It's a foot peg for the front axle of a BMX bike. I bought it from the bicycle section of K Mart or BigW. Turned off a part of the knurling to protect my fingers. Works fantastic. The OEM tool post handle was wimpy and I'm not a fan of ball grips. This was cheap to buy. I think the internal thread needed re-tapping as the handle shaft was metric and bicycle stuff is all BSB. I still have the other one somewhere 😎

an even easier way is to use a full wave bridge rectifier to do it completely automatically, the positive and negative connections go to the lamp and the 2 "AC" connections come from the generator. the symbols used for the AC input are "~" for both, the positive is a "+" symbol, and the negative is the "-" symbol if it is shown, the input side can take either polarity and the output "+" "-" will always output the same polarity no matter the input polarity , I have used this trick on CB radio equipment to prevent fools from destroying the gear when connecting the dc power to the radio, it works a treat
@grafton261

@@Xynudu A bridge rectifier is essentially 4 diodes , diodes are like a one way valve and can also be used on things like solar installations to ensure that the current/voltage only flows in the desired direction

Sounds like a good trick. I have not tried using a bridge rectifier with DC input. Interesting. I will have to try that switching output on a power supply. Cheers Rob
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 8 күн бұрын
I'm aware of how a bridge rectifier works and have fabricated them on occasions, but never considered using it with DC input. I've used them with the usual AC input plenty of times. I googled this and you are correct. The downside is that there is considerable voltage drop from the diodes, which will be a serious issue for the low voltages we are dealing with. Always learning. That's a nice little generator set Rob 👍👍👍 I'm quite sure all those engines you tried would be capable of driving the generator if they were supplied with enough steam pressure. Those little boilers are generally designed to produce about 15PSI, which is more than enough to turn the engines over. If you connected them to a boiler that could produce 20 to 30 PSI I'm sure they would drive it no problem. Cheers, Alan.
@Xynudu
@Xynudu 12 күн бұрын
Hi Alan. Yes, I'm sure you're correct. I have thought about inserting an aluminium spacer into the round boiler with the bolted up join (small kit engine) to increase capacity. Not sure if it would act as a heat sink though ? Would be easy to do with some home cast ally. I might give it a go. I was surprised how well the cheap oscillator steam engine drove the genny. Cheers Rob
@RetroSteamTech
@RetroSteamTech 12 күн бұрын
@@Xynudu Hi Rob. Increasing the capacity of a boiler will generally increase the run time you get from it. The pressure is more to do with how much heat you apply to the boiler. I suspect that the reason the little oscillator engine drove the generator ok is because the boiler has two burners. Obviously with a small boiler you have to be careful applying more heat as the small amount of water in them will be used up very quickly. Cheers, Alan.

How long does it take for that mix to cure? I'm making a pizza oven and did the first 8" or so of the "igloo" with perlite and refractory cement, then the rest with perlite and portland cement. The portland cement and perlie is rock hard, but the refractory mix isn't. It's set, but still kind of "damp" and not solid. Been three days...

Be careful, many councils are now prosecuting for removing items from nature strips, once they are put on the nature strip they become the property of the local council and they then resell them. The council that I live in is such an example. David

Not too sure about the rules and regulations but that doesn't appear to be the case in Adelaide's western suburbs. Hard rubbish as it is known, needs to be arranged for collection with the local council. If its not arranged or until council collects it, its a free for all. I recently "collected" a Stihl petrol leaf blower. A new spark plug and 10 minutes tinkering with the idle and mixture screws and it works perfectly.

Good pick up. A lot of people have no idea about things mechanical and that's a classic case of your good fortune. Even if it's stuffed you can quite often use the CDI, carby etc for similar models that share parts. We have to arrange for pick up as well in Mitcham. I think that's the same for all districts now. Pity, as the old system was like a gold rush. I got some amazing hauls.

Bronze brazing rod can be bought from most plumbing and welding shops. Make sure you get the correct type for the welding system you intend using. Welding bronze with bronze will be tricky as the rod will only melt slightly earlier than the statue. You may be better off using a lower temperature rod such as the type plumbers use for joining copper pipe.
