I cannot wait to do this! And now I am hungrily looking around for worlds for Japan, or any Spanish-speaking country, so that I can take my other students on virtual field trips. I started making the Paris one, but like I said, there is more detail in this world than I would have put in. I'll have to build a little restaurant and a little souvenir stand, but other than that, it is turn-key. I'm so stoked!

So what happens to the students on top 3? is there like a duolingo feature or does the leader board just reset?
@madamesensei
@madamesensei 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question! This is your special classroom leaderboard -- You get to decide how you use it in class. This leaderboard is only for the one classroom (so I have seven different classroom leaderboards); there are no leagues for the students to compete in. They are just competing with each other. I like to take a screenshot on Sunday to show my students on Monday morning. That way, I can also get my classes competing against each other, in addition to the in-class competition. Plus, I make a big deal over who beat me, as I make sure to show where I am on the leaderboard. I have my leaderboard set to re-set every Sunday evening. You may decide that another day is better for you. But since the students are not moving up or down in a league, the leaderboard simply re-sets. You can reward with a hearty round of classroom applause, or stickers, or candy, or however you want to celebrate.

Thank you for the video. I use games and group activities a lot in my classess, and students love them. But being shy and reserved is the only problem that keeps in most of my students. I guess it has something to do with their personalities and I try not to emphasize that, or change that. But I do know they're less shy when playing with their fellow students so I try to come up with group activities. I would also love to hear more about how you use those games you showed in the video, because Jenga and Uno are not popular here in Uzbekistan. Most of us have never even heard about them. Or should I just google it?

Thank you for your comment, @XurshidMatnazarov! Yes, I truly believe that shy students will come out of their shells by playing games. I wanted to discuss why I use game-based learning first (13 videos total). Next I will discuss some pedagogical techniques (the "how" part), and then I will discuss all the specific games (the "what" section). In that part, I will show specific games and how I use them. On the docket are Jenga, and Uno (I already have a video on Uno in the Pedagogy playlist. It is very similar to the game Crazy 8's if you have heard of that, and in Japan we called it トランプ。) I will also show how to play Clue (Cluedo) and Guess Who, as well as some projects like a fake Tour de France, pretend shopping, and cooking in class. I will also talk about games behind the computer, like Minecraft, Blooket, and Duolingo, and how to keep your students communicating through all of them. Here is the Uno video. Good news! The update for Duolingo for Schools means that all the scripts are available as a pdf with just a click. Go to the "assign" tab in any one of your classrooms. If you like, you can type the name of the story, or words that you remember, to search for the story easier. Then, click on the story, and on the right-hand side of the screen will appear the button to print. Have fun!

Shamsul, what language are you studying? And have you completed everything up to Unit 13? Are you using a phone or a computer? Due to feedback, Duolingo is now "collapsing" some units so that you are not overwhelmed visually. If there is a unit 14 and beyond in the language that you are studying, they will most likely appear when you get there. If you are not there yet but think that you can handle it, just click the "jump to" button and take the test to unlock things. Happy learning!

New system is Terrible for me. The color scheme discussed is off (maybe it is different for school versions). All I can tell is now I can go from Gold check marks to purple Legendary. I was trying to finish level 4s and work my way up to legendary, but now I can only either repeat lessons or 'try' to get legendary. I have a busy life and toddler so sometimes I am multitasking to learn. Now it costs me 'coins' to move up unless I pay for premium. Sad to say my 700+ day practice streak doesn't seem worth it anymore. Makes me sad. Here is a link to go back to old system till the end of the year. kzbin.infoS14J4E7hPVk?feature=share

Good to know! Yes, transitions can be hard. I am kind of laughing, because I have been using Duolingo in my classroom since almost its inception, and every time there is an update, people have the exact same experience you describe: Initially recalcitrant, but then coming to understand why the update in a step in the positive direction, and eventually not only coming to terms with it, but also embracing it. What about languages that currently don't have tips inside the app. Will they finally have them now? Tip: They should hide the further path that is not unlocked. User should not be able to see other animations and how long the course is. That should motivate them more. Imagine trying to learn french which has more than 100 of these lessons. It is already long, imagine when they make it in a single line. It would take you ages to scroll down to see the bottom.

@@madamesensei Finally, i've been sending them feedback for years on that issue and they never solved it. I never understood why you can't access the guidbook on the the app if you have it already on the website. It makes the app useless if i have to open webbrowser each time I need an explanation.

@@madamesensei The Guidebooks should ALL have been prepared well BEFORE the final roll-out. Now that my web version has updated to the PATH, I now lose access to the Tips that WERE still available. PREFACE: This is a duplicate post from Duolingo's official announcement on YT, but I felt it was important enough (for me, at least) to post here as well. I really wish user experience and feedback about the new update weren't so blatantly dismissed by Duolingo - - - - I'm getting to the part of the Finnish course where the lessons are starting to introduce too many concepts at the same time for me. If I were going through this for the very first time, I would be getting seriously frustrated and likely would have quit WAY before I could celebrate my now nearing 500-day streak. I've stopped my German course because the PATH totally demotivates me to learn. I really don't understand the new update for the general user base when the HOVER METHOD was proven to be easily applied and effective with the TREE Interface. The TREE allowed for the freedom to self-direct our own way, based on our own learning needs. it was a choice I deeply valued! The PATH should have been kept to the Duolingo For Schools program where younger learners may do better with less distraction. "...if your approach has been to completely “level up” a skill and turn it gold before moving on to the next one, the new path may feel a bit different." It DOES NOT feel a bit different - it feels like a terrible and frustrating loss to those of us who learn better with 'mastering' smaller chunks before moving on to new material. It's not like we didn't go back and practice previous lessons! We were still applying spaced repetition, just not as aggressively as the PATH forces us to. More importantly, we were still learning and developing language retention and FINISHING our courses! ALSO from the Duolingo website: "Everyone learns in different ways." How has Duolingo forgotten this? I've now given the PATH Interface a fair chance for the past 20'sh days, and my opinion hasn't changed from my initial impressions. It sucked then and it continues to suck on so many levels (not even getting into the mystery meat aspect of the interface, how badly transferred the Finnish course appears to be, or how stupidly difficult it is to do any targetted lesson review/practice now... or the removal of paid units for some languages, tips for others, the stories library, etc., or any other perks that some languages had that I don't even know about because not every course is treated equally). Removing freedom and creating barriers to learning is never a good thing, IMO. It's not about change aversion - it's about suffering the loss of an interface that allowed for freedom of self-directed language learning because truly, everyone learns in different ways.

I’m an American English speaker now living in Germany and have been doing the Duolingo German tree. About 9 months ago or sometime in 2021, Duolingo updated the German tree. I was in Unit 6 when this happened. With the update, I pretty much had 2 additional Units to complete. I didn’t mind, it was more lessons. I actually upgraded so I wouldn't need to worry about hearts. One thing I loved about the tree is that i could choose what I wanted to learn based on what I needed. For example , I went to a concert in Berlin, therefore I did the “Concert” lesson. I went to Karneval in Cologne, therefore I did the “Carnival” lessons. Went to the doctor, I could do the “Health” lessons, all while still advancing along my tree. This is completely gone now. Plus the “Flirting” and “Idioms” I bought for German and Spanish are now gone. Not to mention the Stories tab is gone. I’m definitely not renewing my subscription after this new update.

I was slowly going through the German course and discovered that the additional Gem lessons were taken away before I had the chance to do them. It's really frustrating that you can't access them at all now, along with the stories. If it were my App, and I wanted to add stories to the learning PATH, I would have written brand new ones and KEPT the library of stories available for the peeps who sometimes just want to read a couple to destress without starting a new lesson. I also greatly miss that you simply can't focus on one specific topic anymore, either learning it for it first time, or in review. It's been a couple of weeks since the mass roll-out and I'm still very upset with both the update and the attitude of Duolingo in response to the negative feedback. They can't even CONSIDER that maybe the PATH interface is disruptive to the learning of many of their users, some of whom have now cancelled subscriptions because THIS is NOT what they paid for!
@madamesensei

I'm waiting for a response from Duolingo about the Flirting, Idioms, and Christmas bonus skills. The stories are now integrated into the path; after the roll-out is done, then Duolingo will look at restoring the "conversation" mode of the stories (the listening mode). Good for you for knowing what precisely you want to study. Are you not seeing titles by the units? There should also be a "jump to" button. Good luck in your learning!

This update was an absolute disaster for the app. There is pretty much an all out revolt of current customers (see the reviews, NBC article) who preferred Duolingo over technically superior programs like Rosetta or Babbel because of the flexibility, control, gamification, and fun it offers. If you take all that out for the sake of attracting new "baby" users, then what's the point? In terms of a linear program, why not just go with Rosetta Stone (B student) or Babbel (A- student) rather than this new cutesie but inferior Duolingo (C- student)?

@@madamesensei At the moment, I'm preferring Mondly (which is technically inferior to Duolingo) for the simple fact that I have the CHOICE to self-direct my learning! Maybe your students want or need to have more direction, but many adult Duolingo users don't appreciate having their hands held like this. It's funny, I used to get upset with Duolingo for its inconsistencies across languages and OS platforms, the bugs and all the A/B testings but I always thought the TREE interface was brilliant and even though the Hover Method was heavily recommended, there was a choice in how someone used Duolingo as a tool. Now, the choice has been unceremoniously stripped away with zero warning and has negatively affected more people than Duolingo wants to admit.
