I have been teaching the blended pentatonic 8-tone scale for awhile now in blues lessons and now that I'm getting into bluegrass I'm really glad to see someone else utilizing it explicitly as a scale in its own right. Great stuff!
@HayesGriffin8 күн бұрын
Awesome! I’d love to examine more of a blues approach to this concept on electric. Thanks for the comment!
@CassWhistles-le6sf6 күн бұрын
@HayesGriffin I find the easiest thing to do (to maintain a bluesy sound which starts to fall apart as you get too harmonically dense for too long) is use the whole scale but switch between emphasizing (i.e. landing on) the major pentatonic with passing tones/embellishments from the whole scale. And vice versa. Since you have a jazz education I'm sure you've already noticed that this scale is also really close to the "lydian mode" of Barry Harris' minor six diminished scale. I am excited to see more of your work! Love your stuff with Marcel too!

More gold from Hayes. I'm now close to a year into my bluegrass journey, and early on I came across a HG vid about pick discipline; downbeat=downstroke, upbeat=upstroke. As a life long folk player, this was a tremendous help in becoming a flat picker. I've been to 40, or 50 jams now, and rarely pass on a break. I can manage new songs, (not new tunes), on the fly with less, and less crash and burns. This is another tool to help get up to speed. Thank you Hayes Griffin!
@HayesGriffin22 күн бұрын
Glad it’s helping your progress Jim! Thanks for the kind words 🙏🎸
@loco.joe.goldfinger22 күн бұрын
I never really bothered with all that upstroke/downstroke escape stuff. 95% of the time my motion is a double escape and at this point my right hand has little trouble playing at faster tempos. I like the freedom of not having to plan out my lines WRT how I tilt my wrist. But to be fair: I'm also stubborn af and a little bit masochistic, so take all that with a grain of salt. Your way is probably easier. On the other hand (ha!), if you have some tips on how to get my fretting hand to keep up, that'd be fantastic :D
@jimmccarley960922 күн бұрын
I'm guessing Hayes employs this pick escape stuff working on his contest arrangements, which are quite technical. I may never do a contest, but I do work out mapped lines for common songs. I don't always play them as planned, (kinda funny how that happens), but I do try to have something cool, or interesting for expected songs, tunes, and this may help with tricky lines, eventually creeping into my toolbox.
@HayesGriffin22 күн бұрын
I definitely did employ the pick slanting techniques in some of my contest arrangements, but I always blend it with double-escape picking. I haven't found a way to crosspick yet without double-escape picking, which means my bluegrass technique will be a hybrid one from now on. I'll think about some ways to work on left hand sync at speed!

I'm glad for that line about "you don't get better at sprinting by walking faster". I don't think people realize just how much their technique changes at various tempos, but it's obvious that when we walk, jog, and sprint there's a major change in our motions. Just because guitar picking is a smaller action than walking or running doesn't make it less subject to this same kind of change! People love to harp on old chestnuts of wisdom like "slow is smooth and smooth is fast" and all this but I think if we find where our "walking" tempos turn into "jogging" and then "running" we can start recognizing what these changes in technique feel like and how to adapt them, instead of continually turning the metronome down and applying a technique that only works for those "walking" tempos. Hopefully this makes sense, TLDR I think we agree 🙃
