Since elected Officials seem to want to drag their collective feet on any new Nuclear Technology, why not approach it another way. New "Superweapons" give Politicians an itch in their pants, and leave them wanting to throw money and resources at them. Why not propose advancing our Naval Nuclear Technology, towards Thorium reactor technology. This would not only be an advancement in Military capability, but also provide many operating systems to perfect and advance the tech. for civilian use, just like has been done by countless products before?

Great discussion but does the anti-nuclear speaker actually know that CO2 levels were 4-5 times higher when prehistoric humans were evolving! So how is coal burning supposed to be catastrophic?! Currently earth’s atmosphere is only 0.42% or 420ppm CO2. And btw don’t stop drinking milk or eating red meat to reduce methane emissions; methane is only 0.00018% of earth’s atmosphere, (NASA and IPCC a report the same figures)!

Gordon, did you know? Caesium-137 can be transmuted to stable Barium 136 & 137 by proton bombardment (~13 MeV) from an accelerator. In the process, a gamma ray and a neutron is released, which could be absorbed by Thorium, for instance. Even this fission product has more to give, if used creatively and treated with respect. Keep-up the good work.

Given the expansion of the US military around the world (800 bases and counting), that was a brillant move for China to secure at least 1 card to play against the warmonging powers of the West. Thanks god the Chinese were smart enough to use capitalism to hurt the West in the way the capitalists use those financial tools to attack a lot of weak small countries and scavenge their resources.

for example, recent use of depleted uranium, can be dispersed in trade winds, this makes it to the us... poisoning hawaii and the mainlands as well as other countries along the path... you can correlate sickness to it... and identify it in blood tests... and thats just one exposure source among many... do you think people who have fatigue due to this, would want to work etc? what if they have cancer? the costs to exonomy ia much more than one would initially assume.

Total rubbish talk because it treats rare earth = military. It is obvious that those people carrying out research with rare earth in the US find themselves unimportant in the military and seeks more funding and better salary reward for what they do. So they use falling behind to scare the military. The fact of the matter everything in the US is profit driven. There is no large commercial reward with rare earth because the quantity involved is small while the environmental impact is huge. That is why the American wouldn't do it because there is no money in it. Now the US need rare earth for its military, EV and high tech products. So the American scientists are under pressure to deliver. Guess what they blame lack of funding (subsidies). It is just a blame game. US scientists don't do separation of rare earth because there is no future, no money and commercial value. It is far easier to write papers to blame lack of subsidies. Remember until the advent of EV who gives the rat ass about rare earth magnet?

Thanks Gordon - It seems like these guys have been fighting this Rare Earths battle for quite a number of years now. I'm no right winger, but can see that government regulations sometimes get in the way of positive things getting done. Maybe we need more engineering types in our Congress. In addition, these Chinese communists seem to be doing a better job manipulating markets that the Wall Street boys. I also wondered if this thing could somehow pose an opportunity for you guys, the Canadians. I bet there are a lot of US laws that encourage niche markets.

IMHO, you don't get US governments to do much of anything of a strategic nature until it becomes exactly that; strategic and political related to winning future elections. The RE issue hasn't reached that level until this decade (not even 2010). Hence, the likes of Mr. Lifton and Mr. Kennedy banging their heads for the last 3 decades against the US gov wall. Only now will politicians react in the RE sector and then even now, dogma plays a large part in those political responses! GLTA - REI

Very good explanation. But what I see as retired pipefitter having worked at mine ,that went bankrupt then couple solar plants ,they were a joke. One still operating, it uses gas or oil at least %50 of time, the other was different design never worked right now closed, it's brand new super heaters came from China and all leaked from day one.(made alot of $$$ fixing Chinese junk)Well that's my background. USA has to much regulation to ever compete with China...environmental, safety & now the green lie....lets talk about it, let's study it, talk some ,then make more rules®ulation...my point is BS!

I see some commenters like @smarttarts complaining that nothing is happening with this tech. It's not happening because people, including yourself, aren't doing enough to change the political landscape. Kirk, Gordon and John have done more than anyone to push the needle, but if all you're doing is sitting on your @ss watching KZbin then you'll get the govt (and regulators) you deserve.

Yeah, it's like Boeing is not making military planes for the US army. SpaceX is not sending spy satellites up. Even more laughable is that the mainland China has been using Simplified Chinese for over 60 years, and Jim Kennedy still didn't get the memo about that. So let's wait another 60 years, maybe someone in the US will finally realize that by putting Traditional Chinese on the whiteboard, they make themselves look like fools, or dinosaurs who never learned.
