Wonderful video as always! 💪💪👍. Such good coaching info. I know it may not be the focus for your channel, but as an age group triathlete I need some different skiils - distances are long, it's mass start open water being hit and kicked, need to sight every few strokes, need minimal kick to save the legs for the ride and run, etc. It's hard to find good information on translating pool skills to triathlon or posibbly different drills to do/ try. I am in Canada which means the majority of my pre season swimming has to be indoors. Maybe a future video could give desperately needed tips for us hungry for guidance triathletes 😊 thanks as always for the great videos!!

The breathing could cause that. Try sticking to a consistent breathing pattern with more oxygen intake than you’re currently getting. Example- if you’re currently breathing every 3 strokes, try dropping down to breathing every 2 strokes. See if that helps!

Can't say I learned anything, but several comments. One, by rotation, I have always thought that hip rotation was slightly less than shoulder rotation. True or not? One of the most interesting comparisons of freestyle mechanics is Ariarne Titmus and Katie Ledecky. Ariarne swims on a breathing pattern of 2, 2, and then 3 or 4, and repeat. Katie swims gallop style. I would love to take one of those O2 meters that tell blood level saturation points and put one on their fingers when they are done with a race. I would be willing to bet that Katie has a higher O2 level. Once you get into oxygen debt, you can not recover. I also like how Katie swims with no kicks for part of the 1500, then 1 kick, then 2 kicks, then 4 kicks, and finally 6 beat kick to finish. I always watch the Olympics. For the first time ever, I noticed one male swimmer who was breathing every 4th arm pull on the 100. Pretty much all the rest of them were gallop style. I would like to put an O2 sensor on his finger too after a race.

@frehlingswim21 күн бұрын
First 70.3. That is awesome!! What have you tried so far to improve your speed? It sounds like you have the endurance piece to the puzzle nailed down(especially with your intense cross training). I'll give you some recommendations to help lower your 100m pace based off what you've tried so far.

@ thanks coach!! Actually 2 Days of the week I do intervals 100m 50m and 200m depending on the day usually taking 10-30 sec rest between
@frehlingswim20 күн бұрын
Ok awesome!! Try moving the interval out to 2-3 minutes rest for some of the 50s, 5-6 minutes for the 100s so you can ramp up the intensity to full blast. 10-30 seconds rest is great when you're trying to hold pace, but not enough for full sprint/speed work. A few weeks of that should make a difference for your overall 100m pace.

Thanks for this great video. Should the yardage remain the same and effort should be made to just sprint faster or should number of sprint sets also be increased to improve speed?
@frehlingswim22 күн бұрын
Great question! It sounds like you want to build both speed and endurance, am I reading that correctly? If that's the case, I would recommend a 10% weekly yardage increase for 6 weeks AND you can include a speed set(80-100% effort) and endurance set(60-80% effort) in most of your training sessions. Hope this helps!

I always feel like I'm going nowhere when I overkick drill. Also, I can only handle the restricted breathing above 3 breaths if I pull the set. I swim 3x/week totaling 12,000 yards so I don't think swimming more is going to help me. Thanks for your video. It has great content and presentation.
@frehlingswim22 күн бұрын
12K yards is an AWESOME weekly baseline. For overkick drill, it's ok if you aren't moving quick through the water. The goal of the drill is to fire up your core and legs, so they are the dominant part of the drill. The slower arms will allow you to feel more control in your tempo. It's a great prep for speed work. When it comes to restricted breathing, pulling is great! You could also try lowering your effort level down to 40-60% without a pull buoy to see if that helps you hold a 5+ breathing pattern with a soft/light kick. Thanks for the feedback! Let me know how training goes.

Coming back after surgery is tough. Try starting back up with the fundamentals to build your strength and technique back, then you can go into a conservative yardage build. It will take time to come back, but stay consistent and it will come back. Wishing you a speedy recovery!! Here's a video reminder of the fundamentals. As far as the breathing goes, I tried for years to breathe on every 3rd arm stroke with freestyle. I was never able to get beyond 100 yards without gasping for air. I now swim the gallop style. It was made for me. My guess is that I just burn more O2 than most others. With back stroke, I breathe with every arm pull. I have tried slowing stroke rate down and up, and the results are the same, have to breathe on every arm pull....
@frehlingswim23 күн бұрын
It's great that you found what works for you!
@robohippy21 күн бұрын
Among my efforts were many lengths and laps, mostly with descending breath counts. Every other arm stroke, every 3rd, 4th, till I got the length of my 25 yard pool. Same results, If I was doing laps, never past 100 yards without gasping. If I swam one length with no breaths, I would have to stop and catch up. I did swim the length of a 50 yard pool in one breath when young. I might be able to do that still in my short course pool, but hard to say. Don't want to do the black out thing.... Besides, the life guards would get nervous.... Every body is different.
@frehlingswim20 күн бұрын
Every body is absolutely different! You could try doing the breath control training for one set only within your training session, with extended rest. 6 X 50s breathing every 4th stroke with an extra 30 seconds to 1 minute rest. If breath control training isn't for you I absolutely understand, happy swimming and happy new year!

I do like to vary the amplitude of my kicks during my kicking laps. High/big amplitude to maintain power through the whole kicking motion, medium for race type situations or what you do when you race, and small for developing leg speed. Do look at the Finis Positive Drive Fins, PDFs. The only ergonomically correct fins that are out there. We do not have flat feet like frogs. Ours are very 3D.

Yesterday afternoon, my hamstrings were killing me??? WTF? I have been at it for a year, but only recently added flips to my workouts... but now... ouch... But this is great stuff... I love focusing on my underwater swimming, because it is so much faster... and I know this based on my works. I can be in a lane next to slightly faster swimmer, but I'll always catch them on the turns with my underwaters. This is a great video. Thanks, Coach!!! Later gator vs

Thanks Van! So exciting your meet is coming up at the end of Jan. Are you tapering for it? Also, it sounds like you’ve been seriously working your underwaters and turns! So awesome. Getting stronger kicking in both directions💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 so happy you’re finding the speed.

Don’t understand rhythm 1-2-kick-kick if in reality it is kick-kick-kick-kick
@frehlingswimАй бұрын
Yes! You have it right, it’s kick kick kick kick. There are 2 kicks per stroke cycle. I call out 1 to indicate your first kick in your stroke cycle (when your hands enter the water) and 2 to indicate the second kick in your stroke cycle(when your hands exit the water).
@robohippyАй бұрын
Well, a couple of points that apply to me, but maybe not to every one. I have very stiff ankles. If I try to kick with relaxed ankles, my ankle is flexed to maybe 30 degrees. I have to make an effort to point my toes. I have not been able to sit on my heels for eons. For fins, I remain puzzled by the traditional "frog feet" or maybe Duck feet for me since I am an Oregon Duck.... The propulsion in kicking comes from going slightly pigeon toed, and then the side of the foot generates push, not a pointed toe. Especially for stiff ankled people like me, going pigeon toed gives me 20 or so degrees of extra toe point. The only fins I have seen that are "ergonomically" correct are the positive drive fins from Finis, aka PDFs. Lots of fin on the little toe side, very little fin on the big toe side. This turns your toes in and rolls your ankles. I tried for years to use a gymnastic toe point. Once I learned to go pigeon toed, it cut my kick time in half. I will subscribe for a bit, just curious. My favorite stroke is the over arm side stroke. Only record was set in 1895, time of 1:02.5 for 100 yards. Side stroke was dropped for the much slower breast stroke prior to the 1900 Olympics because it was more "gentlemanly" because there was less splashing.
@robohippyАй бұрын
I am so old, 74, they wouldn't teach us flip turns as a kid because "they are too difficult for you kids". Now they teach them about the time you can make a length of the pool. We differ on a couple of things. I NEVER depend on the T on the bottom of the pool. In watching the Olympics, ALL of the swimmers spot the X on the wall, and not the T on the bottom. This involves raising the head a bit, but it is important to not to raise the head too far because as you said, your hips can drop. This is also an essential tumbling concept for flips and forward rolls. By raising the head a bit, when you tuck your chin, that adds to the rotation. There used to be an old school teaching that using the arms was "wasted motion". Pretty much every one now teaches to do a bicep/shoulder curl, and I keep my arms more at about the same bend you are using when swimming. I try to not pull past streamline position, but when I am tired, I do tend to pull past that point, not quite touching my shoulders. The abs, along with the dolphin kick help you fold up. Your lower back muscles help you unfold/get your body straightened out again.
