@rudolfsreef
@rudolfsreef 7 ай бұрын
Can’t see why not! It could be replicated in any container I would imagine. All that is needed is a pump and a light. Of course, also the saltwater [from a tank with fish/corals i.e. nutrients (wastes) for the algae] and Chaetomorpha algae (which will consume the nutrients NO3/PO4 but also consume trace elements). a circulation pump with controllable flow would be best suited. I used a Jebao DC controllable pump. The refugium lights are from Tunze. They are waterproof. Recommended to use then submerged to get more light output. Model Tunze LED ECO Chic Refugium.

Stopped using Chaetomorpha macroalgae in sump filtration nearly two months ago. The increased ceramic media (biological filtration) is working well; all parameters are stable and on target. Filtration is now just biological & protein skimming. No mechanical filter floss/socks for years; No UV (never on this tank); No water changes for almost 2.5 years & now No Chaetomorpha algae scrubber. Just few supplements are auto-dosed : solutions of bicarbonate, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, Tropic Marin trace elements A-/K+, & Potassium. In case water clarity reduces, will add activated carbon for a week then remove it. If PO4 ever rises, will add Maxspect phosphree (or GFO) to the sump but I doubt will need to use it. Tank maintenance is very simple these days 🙂

Thanks! New beginners, should stay clear of the temptation to introduce tangs to their new tank; tangs are very demanding, readily prone to disease, need to eat a lot and pollute the water a lot as a consequence. Clowns and chromis are a good starter fish. Good you started with a few fish. Patience, determination and go slow. Any change made takes weeks, even months to see the true effect. Reefkeeping is similar to Japanese bonsai keeping - extremely slow, articulate yet rewarding art forms.

Just speachless i cant get my eyes off this. I just built my little 60 gallon 3 weeks ago my first tank ever already regret a couple things but im still learning. How do you start the Caroline algae in a tank ?
@rudolfsreef
@rudolfsreef 9 ай бұрын
Thanks! For coralline algae to grow in your tank, it needs to not only be cycled but also have stability from day to day over some weeks. In newly cycled tanks, other faster growing organisms outcompete coralline algae. You need patience and good husbandry, wait for the other pest algae and bacteria to do their thing and over time as the tank matures, an equilibrium will be reached. that’s when coralline algae will grow. once it starts growing it’ll grow pretty fast. It needs good lighting, basically any saltwater tanks lights (LEDs and/or T5s) will do fine 8-12 hrs per day. Must do basic water chemistry weekly testing with stable values: pH 8.0-8.5, Alkalinity 8-9 dH, Calcium 400-460ppm, Magnesium 1300-1450ppm, Salinity 1.025-1.027 (~35ppt). All the best!

In either case, the connective plumbing and the PVC seals caps are all supplied with the Reefer tank on purchase. These parts can also be ordered individually from RedSea. Looking into a bird wrasse myself for my reef tank. What’s your experience with him and cleanup crews
@rudolfsreef
@rudolfsreef 10 ай бұрын
it will devour clean up crews. This bird wrasse has been with us for many years. When it was a female it would not go for the turbo snails. The snails thrived and multiplied, from just four snails they became over a hundred. Then she turned into a male over a period of some weeks, and then He decided to obliterate all of the snails in just a few days. The Toby puffer got in on it too, they teamed up together. It was beautiful and horrible at the same time. We love him a lot but he is our last bird wrasse. Need to have turbo snails but can’t keep em just yet. Two turbos did survive. They are in the sump doing well for about a year now.

Thank you ! To control pest algae, first we try to understand which algae it is we want to control as many algae are good for the reef. Algae (zooxanthellae) are essential to corals, so are the colorful coralline algae to a thriving reef. Most pest algae can be controlled by maintaining low NO3, PO4, SiO2. So this is what we’ve been doing … 1. No water changes 2. Use only RODI for ATO 3. Feed to only the fish (once per day). No coral foods. 4. Use an efficient optimally running Skimmer (not over efficient and not under efficient). 5. For PO4 and NO3 removal, we used chaeto algae scrubber for some years. Excess chaeto harvested every two weeks and went to our gardens compost. However, we discontinued the algae scrubber since a couple of weeks to try something new - bio blocks and biospheres from Maxspect (no aluminum leaching media). 6. PO4 removal. For 6 months have tested Maxspect’s Phosphree resin as an alternative to GFO. It works great. Am researching a method to regenerate the old resin so that we Never have to dispose of the old resin ever again to be able to reuse it again and again for many years. 7. NO3 removal. An efficient skimmer should help a lot. keep the skimmer neck clean regularly for it to work best at waste removal. No sand bed. Don’t feed Nori (high in nitrate). 8. Since a month have been carbon dosing to help increase the heterotrophic bacteria that consume NO3. Monitoring the NO3 levels. Looks good so far. When doing Carbon dosing it is important to have a very efficient skimmer. 9. Lighting period not too long. We run our AI LEDs from 11am to 8pm. 10. If NO3 start to spike, we will restart the chaeto algae scrubber. it works really well to control NO3 and PO4 but it also has disadvantages like consumes other elements that corals need, release fragments into the sump, more work maintenance of the sump.
@rudolfsreef
@rudolfsreef 10 ай бұрын
PO4 at 0.03ppm and the NO3 at 30ppm. Sometimes albeit rarely the NO3 go down to 10-20ppm to as high as 40-60ppm. When this happens we don’t do water changes. We clean the sump, siphoned out detritus from the tank/sump, clean the circulation pumps, skimmer, basically get everything running as efficiently as possible. A week later the values drop and stabilize.

@rudolfsreef
@rudolfsreef Жыл бұрын
Hi ! Our Toby has been with us a very Long time. It is currently our oldest living fish ~10 years. It is very inquisitive and will test bite at new corals but then leave them alone. We have never lost a coral to Toby. However, it has eaten almost all the Turbo snails >50. We cannot keep any fire shrimp or peppermint shrimp, it has eaten them too. It eats the same food as all other fish in the tank (small pellets Omega One formula 1 and 2), two feeds per day. Additionally, Puffers need hard shelled foods (eg. small clams/mussels with shells) so that their teeth do not get large. They use their teeth to gnaw into the shelled mollusks and the teeth remain small this way. Recommend to read up on puffer fish and their teeth ! After 10 years, the teeth of our Toby got too large and we had to take it out because it got lethargic and wouldn’t eat anymore. We took it out of the tank, treat it carefully in mild clove oil bath to numb it/sleep/anesthesia (overdose of clove oil will kill the fish and under-dose it can sense pain from the dental surgery), then with a coral cutting tool & magnifying glasses, carefully cut down its overgrown teeth. It recovered fully in a couple hours and has been ferociously hunting, swimming all around the tank and strongly competing with other fish during feeding time, which has made us very glad !

How do you determine what salts are needed and when to dose them ?
@rudolfsreef
@rudolfsreef 2 жыл бұрын
@Trevor : Salinity is measured with a refractometer and it is maintained at a specific gravity of 1.026. A Tunze Osmolator (auto top off) maintains the water level, evaporated water is topped off with RODI freshwater. As for the other supplements, Magnesium chloride for Magnesium (1350ppm), Calcium chloride for Calcium (460ppm), Sodium bicarbonate for alkalinity (7-8 •dH) and Potassium (350-400ppm). These are measured weekly. To determine how much supplement to dose, you need to first determine its consumption. Example Alkalinity, measure it daily for a week. If day 1 it was 9 od and on day 7 it dropped down to 7 od. The consumption is 2 od per week. A dosing calculator can then be very helpful to know how much bicarbonate to add to increase the alkalinity by 2 od for your tank volume. reef.diesyst.com/cf/chemcalccf.html In our case the calculator will tell us how much bicarbonate powder to add. This amount of powder we dissolve first in 1 L of RODI water, only after it is fully dissolved, do we then add the bicarbonate solution slowly to the tank. Years ago, we use to dose manually on a weekly basis, but since then have installed a dosing pump to feed quite regularly. Bicarbonate is fed 24 times a day, Calcium chloride 12 times a day, Magnesium chloride 1 time per day. We use Salifert Pro test kits for all of these parameters. All the best !

@@rudolfsreef cool man, I thought it was measuring and dosing automatically ! If you had permanent probes it may be possible?
@rudolfsreef
@rudolfsreef 2 жыл бұрын
Yea it’s absolutely possible to go the route of full automation. There are a variety of robots available for multiple online measurements (GHL Ion Director, Alkatronic, Focustronic, Trident, Reefbot…). Our goal is to keep things simple and therefore will NOT go this direction for now. we prefer the least amount of equipment to service, maintain or fail. We recently left our system without measurements or any service for 4 weeks - on our return, all parameters were on target. We use a 10L storage canister for the bicarbonate solution, another 10L canister for Calcium chloride solution, a 1.5L storage volume for magnesium chloride solution, and 1.5L for the trace elements’ solutions. On the ReefBeat app, we can monitor how long the solutions will last for - 35 days for Alk, Ca, Mg solutions … and for the Tropic Marin trace elements 187 days (1 shot of 8ml each day).

I'm getting a reefer 900xl setup next week. Do you recommend bare bottom? Everyone says getting it cycled is a challenge.
@rudolfsreef
@rudolfsreef 2 жыл бұрын
We used to have coral sand in our previous systems - Nightmare with maintenance and constant chemical variations leading to all sorts of problematic microbial blooms. Definitely bare bottom. As you can see in our tank vids, we strive for minimalistic equipment, with satisfied inhabitants and simple husbandry. If you can start with live rock that’s great - the tank cycling will be short ! But if you start with artificial reef rock then it will take some months for the beneficial bacteria to populate the rock. My advise is to allow cycling for 3 months (seed with a pinch of fish food to start the Nitrogen cycle). Have patience and wait before buying any fish or invertebrates (corals). We were able to start our Reefer straight away with fish and corals because all our rock was live from our previous 10yr old systems (the rock was dead 12 years ago when we first started). When the tank’s finally mature to add live stock, Start very slow, 2-4 small fish (that don’t grow large eg. Percola or Oscellaris clowns). Do follow up measurements every week to watch the trends of temp, pH, salinity or conductivity, Alkalinity, Calcium, Magnesium, Nitrates and Phosphates. Have fun and happy reefing !

Sorry not on any forum. But if you check out my YT playlist “Sump” there’s a video titled “RSR 3xl900 - sump equipment tour”. In the description section of the video, you will find a write up detailing ALL the equipment in use. Since that vid was released, we’re now only running two ReefWave 45 pumps (left and right sides) and two Tunze turbelle (back bottom left and right). No other circulation pumps. Kessil LEDs are replaced with AI Hydra LEDs. Battery backup is with a UPS and EcoFlow River Pro. The Tunze protein skimmer was replaced with a Royal Exclusiv 200 DELUXE - the deluxe version fit perfectly into the RedSea sump (other Royal Exclusiv skimmers may not fit). Don’t run any Carbon or GFO since starting the Chaetomorpha Macro Algae Tumbler (works like a charm to keep PO4 at 0,03ppm and NO3 at 5-10ppm.) Once a year, we add a two cups of RedSea Activated Carbon to a mesh bag and place into return pump section of the sump to improve water clarity. If you watch the Sump playlist series you will see all the developments.
