Hi is this a bass flute?
@WuDaoMusicАй бұрын
I don't think xiao really specifies bass versions because there is typically only one range of each pitched flute. The is a D key flute though so it is a deeper tonal range, yes.

I might have missed this somewhere, but Fa 4 has the same fingering notation as Sol * 5. Is that accurate or is there something else to it?

The fingering position is different. You can see a chart here: www.waysofwudang.com/how-to-read-jian-pu

Fantastic English video for learning Jian Pu! Violinist learning Erhu here, it came with a booklet that explained Jian pu in the most confusing way possible. So glad I found you, as I couldn’t make heads or tails of it. Keep up the good work for us non-mandarin speakers!
@WuDaoMusic2 ай бұрын
Awesome! I am so glad that the jian pu explanation helps. It is a really intuitive system once you get the hang of it.
@Kjetibel2 ай бұрын
A bit confuzing. For example the first line, do you rearticulate with a higher note between the 1s near eachother as usual, aswell as "hitting"? Well I guess the logical answer is no. Thanks for all the videos anyways:)
@WuDaoMusic2 ай бұрын
This is a striking technique (the 打 notation above) which means to strike a the lower hole of each particular note repetition. It is described in my book (link in description) on page 47. ☺

Helpful video, but I feel like for those of use coming to jianpu with a background in Western-style notation, calling each beat a "whole note" is very confusing. I get what you're saying, because it takes up a whole beat, but to me a "whole note" is 4 counts, or a full measure in 4/4. So, to me (and, I would think, most coming from a Western music background), no line should be called a "quarter note," one line underneath an "eighth note," two lines a "sixteenth note," etc.

@elena_2364 ай бұрын
you just need to blow really hard at this moment. then the notes will be higher

@@elena_236 Hm, can it be possible that there's something wrong with my xiao? Not gonna lie, it was a pretty cheap one 😅 No matter how hard I try, it's not this high

@@ava_qira Dude, I'm 100% sure there's nothing wrong with the instrument. Well... Try to blow just as hard, but direct the air flow a little higher than for normal notes. It should work

Great video and also excellent book. One question my Xiao has a UV style opening. I guess it's a little harder to blow and get sound initially. Is it important that your chin where the Xiao rest needs to seal the opening? It's not clear and can't find anywhere where this is mentioned. Any other advice for this kind of mouthpiece opening? Thanks.

This is an F key xiao 箫, but the chart on the right of the image is for a G xiao. All holes closed on an key of F xiao, according to the chart in your book, is a 6, not a 5. Please correct my understanding if necessary, I am a complete beginner...
@WuDaoMusic5 ай бұрын
No, you are absolutely correct. In the standard tuning that is exactly how you would read it. The great thing about xiao is that the solfege (do-re-mi) scale is movable throughout the range of pitches. Throughout the book I am simply doing 1=G or 1=F depending on which flute I am using. That way the fingering positions do not need to be changed. If I wanted to play a G key song (as in with a G key accompaniment) then I would need to play the lowest note on my F key as a 6. However, this is not necessary for music listed as 1=F

@@WuDaoMusic Thanks for your clear explanations. I am currently working on moving to the middle register higher end. For some reason, I cannot do all covered 5 (standard fingering) middle register or beyond. I have heard that if must direct the flow of air higher and more parallel to the floor to achieve the higher tones, but it doesn't seem to work well for me yet. As an exercise, I try to switch from all covered 5 low, to all covered 5 middle but it is very iffy. I have noticed that if I loosen the back thumb covering just a little bit, the higher tones are more accessible. But I think this may not be correct to do this because so far it sounds like a squeak nothing more. I have a tuner app, and I can hit the lower 5 (a solid C, on my F调洞箫 (although a bit airy) but the middle register is only occasionally achieved. I suppose this is a common issue, so I hope this could be useful to others. Thanks in advance for any tips.
