At the Cowlitz Falls Dam in Washington, we filled the area with concrete where the sluice-gate would have gone. The contractor figured it as TOO MUCH MONEY to hang a huge steel gate in there.

Every dam around the world has one common feature .... All have one turbine hall yet in Australia in 2016 a proof of concept test was run in a town north of Sydney of a system that lets existing dams be retro fitted with up to three extra hall with no issues made for the main turbine hall More power from the same volume of water currently used . Where is this system? RDP Marine are the only one running this system as the rest of the industry are stuck in old education and not looking for a better way

@hydropowerwithalinaqviАй бұрын
@awkerper The main inlet valve is a hammer type hydraulic ball valve and is opened by servomotors.

Unfortunately it's not removing the debris, only from the reservoir, instead it's being flushed downstream, where the water levels are lower and the debris can accumulate and cause beaver dam effects... Now if they could catch the debris from the flap gate and actually remove it, that would be so much better.
@hydropowerwithalinaqvi2 ай бұрын
The cloud burst upstream resulted in an extraordinary amount of debris accumulating in the reservoir. This excess debris posed a significant risk to the dam's structural integrity by exerting additional pressure. Given the urgency of the situation and the vast quantity of debris, capturing and removing it within a reasonable timeframe was not feasible. As a result, the decision was made to utilize the flap gates to flush the debris downstream. This is a standard procedure designed to mitigate such risks and protect the dam. While this approach may temporarily displace the problem, it's essential to implement long-term solutions to prevent future accumulation and minimize the impact on downstream areas.

can fish pass through it unharmed?
@jeffspaulding98343 ай бұрын
Not a chance. But there are screens to keep them out. Practical Engineering did some really good videos on how they deal with fish at dams.
@hydropowerwithalinaqvi3 ай бұрын
@jeffspaulding9834 It doesn't harm fish. They can easily pass through. Enough space to pass a fish.
@jeffspaulding98343 ай бұрын
@@hydropowerwithalinaqvi Are they new turbines? I've read that the newer turbines are designed to allow fish to pass through (mostly) unharmed, but fish can't handle the pressure differential in older turbine designs (hence the screens).
@hydropowerwithalinaqvi3 ай бұрын
Fish-friendly designs: Runner designs, such as rounded leading edges, reduce fish injury. However, after the shutdown and during periodic inspection, no fish were found inside the spiral case or tailrace tunnel.

It's the weight of these 'hammers' that's closing the valve. The hydraulic ram keeps it open, or allows these hammers to slowly come down and close the inner valve. The system is designed safe: when oil pressure disappears, this will close in stead of remain open.
