Wonder if the electro magnetic field being generated by the circling of the tree will do some harm to the tree. Kind of like the electro magnetic field generated by wires wound in a motor.

I think the screws sunk into to trunk may do more damage. I have heard of great success electrifying trees with common field electric fencing. The challenge is the alternating wires: this system is a good solution.
@redbirdgardeninganddesign

Very ingenious idea. But I have to say, I'm concerned about screwing into the tree in so many places. Also, the tape wrapped around the trunk can trap moisture and lead to eventual rot. Hope this works out for you in the long run.

Can you make a video step by step on how to do this, please? I have 1 huge pecan tree and one peach tree in my backyard. I have 1 squirrel that keeps taking all my fruit. It's late July. I need 2 more months for pecans to be ripe. Half already gone

Thank you for your answer but my question is if the squirrel is not closing the circuit between the positive and the negative how is he getting a shock ? Thank you.
@jettskitchen8487
@jettskitchen8487 Жыл бұрын
If the squirrel keeps all of his feet only on the foil or only on the chicken wire, then there is no shock. This is why squirrels can walk across high voltage wires without getting electrocuted. In my design, the foil wraps are all hooked together with wire then an aluminum nail pounded into the ground. The positive charge is then attached to the chicken wire. The squirrel closes the circuit when he touches his front feet to the chicken wire, then touches his hind feet to the aluminum tape. He then will get a very low amperage, but high voltage harmless shock. Hope this helps.
@מרדכיהירשקורן

How is the squirrel electricuted what is he touching? If the distance is far between the positive and the negative?
@jettskitchen8487
@jettskitchen8487 Жыл бұрын
The squirrels are not electrocuted. They receive a very brief charge of energy (low amp shock). It is not harmful to them. Regarding the distance of +/- the aluminum tape is the grounds, the chicken wire is the positive so the distance between the two are approximately 6-inches.

Wow! This is some serious squirrel proofing method! Or...... try putting aluminum foil duct tape backwards with the sticky side out (this stuff is durable and very sticky) on the entire truck of the tree. I'm hoping the squirrels will not like the stickiness!! I just put it on my tree and will let you know tomorrow if I have a squirrel stuck to the tree :)! BTW....this would deter the ant issue I am having with my peach tree.....

I love your perseverance and ingenuity. I just planted several fruit trees and am eager to take steps to prevent damage from squirrels and birds too. I don’t have the skills to do the electrical wiring you did - wondering if you’ve since heard of any other solutions that might work? In that regard, how do you protect the fruit from birds?
@jettskitchen8487

I really haven't noticed issues with the birds. I have seen people place objects in trees like spinning pie plates or strips of sheets. Not sure if that was used to deter birds. Maybe someone can chime in.

@@jettskitchen8487 I bought bird netting for my fruit trees and yesterday covered a couple of them, but a question remains - Is it problematic to cover fruit trees too soon, when the fruit is still very tiny? I would have waited until the fruit are larger but I already saw little bites taken out of several of our budding donut peaches and nectarines. I haven’t found a video addressing whether it’s detrimental to cover trees with bird netting too early in the growing process. If you happen to know, thanks in advance for an answer. Edit: I realize you don’t have an issue with birds so this question may not be in your wheelhouse but maybe someone else knows.

@@julietteyork6293 you can use netting to cover the trees. Birds may get caught in the netting and may need help getting released. I have used netting on my young cherry trees before. Our peach tree is too big to cover with netting. Let me know how the netting works for you.
