This movie was my first introduction to Tim Roth. When 1900 puts the cigarette in Jelly Roll's mouth, I can muster no further reaction than to inhale, heavily, through my nose. It's one of those impact moments that remain the same with you, across decades. First time I had that reaction had to have been 2007. I haven't seen the movie since, but I know my reaction to this seen has remained unchanged.

This is a bit long, but hear me out. Danny eviscerates Morton in these three songs. The first song, Morton opens with his red light specialty. Danny responds with a song about purity and virginity, even though the crowd is laughing. "I am the opposite of you". The second song Morton plays a harder song, to throw off Danny. Danny then repeats the exact song, and without anyone else but Morton knowing, does it better. "I can do what you can do, but better." Finally, disgusted and angry he has been ousted, Morton plays his final hand and goes all out with his trump card song. So difficult, that only a master could play better. Danny then plays a song that is impossible. No one person could perform this song. "I can do the impossible." Morton is humiliated and aghast. End scene.

The crowd was mocking 1900 for playing the song they just heard, but Jelly knew it was absolutely insane that 1900 just played his own song note for note. 1900 was trying to be friendly and kind the entire time, even to the point of playing beneath Jelly as to let him be the best, until Jelly pushed way too far
