Great mic but I think you need some low cut on the hot rod to make it sound as good as the regular.

5:30 thanks for explaining the drum samples. I was thinking “there is no way that drum sound is just 2 overheads.”

Can I ask a question, just because I don’t want to open my 4038 up if I don’t need to. Sorry if this is a bit long too. So I’ve had this mic brand new for a few years, and def never exposed it to any big air blasts, or high DB’s, but today I was just doing a little vocal test with it, and I was doing a little rap verse, quite close, and I wasn’t singling loud by any means, and thought I was singing quiet enough that I wouldn’t need a pop filter, so I was trying to be quiet, and gentle on my plosives, but that said, when I listened back, I def exposed it to a few plosives. There was probably about 10 all together, and most were very mild like T’s, and F’s, but there were probably about 4-5 P’s/B’s that were a little stronger, but still pretty mild. I’m so mad at myself, because I almost never do a mic test on any condenser up close without a pop filter, but I just thought I was singing really chill, but, anyways, I tested it after with a pop filter, and it sounded fine, and tone wise nothing was obv messed up, or to different, but if anything, I felt like maybe the low end was a bit thinner, just a hair, but that could be totally in my mind, or just the tonality/pitch of the other takes being a little higher. I just wanted to ask though, in your opinion, and I know you can’t say for sure, but do you think there’s a good chance that even a handful of light plosives messes anything up, or actually stretched the ribbon? Also, say a ribbon did get a little stretched, is low end loss a particular symptom/affect, and do you think if it did stretch a tiny bit, it would be comparable/equal with how it might just stretch naturally over the span of some years? Cheers.

Actually, from the first take I did that had the plosives, I went back and matched the singing, and low end wise, and tonally it sounds fine. Exactly the same essentially. Also did your test, and nothing loose, or rubbing/scraping, but just curious if you think a ribbon can be exposed to a tiny bit of air without being, stretched. I guess I’m lucky, and I know ideally zero air blasts are ideal, but if it was very light, do you think it’s possible to do zero/minimal damage/stretching? I know the coles ribbon is apparently very thin too compared to a royer 121.

I love this guy! Just an incredible human being. I just bought ENAK Microphones from the estate of Clarence Kane, my mentor and friend for decades. We actually go back to his pre-ENAK, RCA days. ENAK, like AEA is faithful to Harry Olson's original design and specs. Nothing wrong with that. But Royer is innovative and as an engineer I love and respect that. John has caused me to re-examine the method of corrugation we use in restoration work. Thank you John! You make amazing and interesting videos! I hope to buy you lunch or dinner some day!

@royerlabs. I already have an older R-122 and wanted to grab one of the new ones to record in stereo like what is demonstrated here. Sounds fantastic!! What is the name of the mic holders that are holding the Royers in place because I’d want to do the exact same thing? Thanks

First, my respect for Jacquire King, best producer on the planet. So I preferred the r-121 without the booster. Running the mic-pre hot on the API you get a little more room noise, but the color of the UAD API running hot sounds crunchy and delicious in my opinion, which is funny because I learned that directly from Jacquire 😂. On the other hand, if I were recording vocals or high gain electric guitar the booster would be wonderful👌. I think it depends on the situation also, if you want the acoustic a little buried in the mix I would say no booster, but if it’s a vocal acoustic solo performance I think the booster would be great! All in all, great demo, great mic, and my absolute favorite producer of all time! Thanks 🙏

This sounded beautiful. It reminded me to take my R-10 to my recording session today. I'll bring my DBooster too. (That should get me to the same place as the Hot Rod, right?)

What do you do if you're still not getting any signal (or barely any signal) after following these instructions? I hooked the dbooster up to the R10. I've tried multiple cables and interfaces and wiggled the cables. I turned on the phantom power before plugging stuff in and I tired turning on the phantom power after plugging it all in.

Please explain badge backwards.
@dobrocat1
@dobrocat1 3 ай бұрын
My apologies for not seeing this sooner. Any Royer mic will have a "name badge" on what is the face or considered front of the mic. They are figure of 8 mics, so, the backside of the microphone also picks up sound. When you spin the mic around to where the "badge" is facing away from the source being recorded, that is considered "badge backwards". Hope that helps. Feel free to ask any more questions you may have and I'll do my best to answer in a quicker manner.
