No, it was written and originally performed by Badfinger. Nilsson heard it and then recorded his version after.

joons2 - I hear ya - this song came out when I was in Vietnam - yeah, the war raged even in the early 70's - and this was a big hit with the guys - probably made a lot of us think of the girl that isn't writing....and maybe some we broke up with. Everybody gets hurt some time - and I am sorry for your sadness - maybe we all get to get over it before the end comes. Good luck.
