As a native Spanish speaker who can understand Portuguese to a 98% in its formal form and to a 80% in a normal conversation, Scots is a language because if it weren't I'd have to say that Portuguese is not a language. There is a huge difference between Yucatec Spanish dialect, Center Chilean Spanish Dialect and Cubans Spanish Dialect to the point that sometimes it is easier to understand a person speaking in formal Portugues than someone speaking in one of those informal forms (dialects) of Spanish.

Very interesting discussion, thank you for posting! I've recently come across religious pluralism and very much enjoy the humility of it. It is almost as though it requires all of us to recognise and admit that our belief in whatever deity or dieties that we believe in is just that - a belief. It leaves room then for us to believe what we believe whilst also respecting another's belief because ultimately all people have their own beliefs which by the nature of beliefs cannot be proved objectively. Indeed, much of the Bible as an example speaks about having faith - something one can only have about things which we cannot prove objectively. With this philosophy, we are all truly equal as even the atheists believe that science is the true reality and that there is nothing greater. A true equality among all people is, in my eyes, the only route to true peace on Earth - a fine alternative to the waging of wars under religious pretences.

I usually wear a belt when I wear a vest if it is quite short. And I have to attach my "pockets" somewhere. I use cartridge pouches that I carry on the right and left. This way I can store all my things without having to carry a sporran, or worse, a handbag.

There has been those that have said, "when wearing a vest there is no need to wear a belt", or even saying one shouldn't wear the belt & buckle when a vest covers it. I wear the belt & buckle anyhow. I wear the kilt in Australia mostly for Scottish Country Dance socials etc. EDIT: I see my question has already been answered by others here.

It should not be forgotten that the Scots was forced out of children in the schools by punishment . All part of English empire building which involves suppression of the local culture, the local people , the local history and the national status. Make no mistake the process continues today by the colonising country nextdoor. Luckily Scotland has its own law and constitution written down because the English parliament likes to pretend that Scotland is not a real country.

I am a Northeastern Scot now living in the USA. In 2000 I was in an Ohio town named Wooster and was at the house of a woman who spoke only English. She asked me to take a look at a book she had which was in a different language. I took the book and opened it and was very surprised to discover it was a bible in Doric. I read from it and then translated what I had read for her. She thanked me and put the book back on a shelf. I had no idea that such a thing existed. I wanted to buy it but it was not to be.
